Blackout (2022)
mostly good, poor ending
I found the story interesting, as the plot developed and the characters came into play and the main character got glimpses into his past I felt engaged.
I did find it a little "forced" in some scenes, but overall not too bad and kept us guessing until the end.
The action scenes were good, good guys wins most of the time, not too ridiculous and probably met the "movie theater definition of realistic". Which is good enough. It's entertainment.
I felt let down at the ending. The character was never properly revealed in my mind. Even if you're leading to a sequel I feel you need to conclude things better than this. Bad guy, good guy, what's in the case, was Eddie just another druggie?
I gave it a 7 as I felt it was somewhat compelling to watch. I didn't fast forward, though I felt like it at times. Maybe that was a generous 7, the end let it down.
Mr. Church (2016)
Eddie Murphy, you do not disappoint
An enjoyable story, you can't help but get involved with the characters in this story as they grow.
I liked finding out at the end that Mr Church wasn't the complete musician, or painter at the start, but it is implied that this was something that developed as he cared for Marie.
It's a bit of a tear jerker, and a great tale of family and family love.
Eddie Murphy never fails to surprise me, and along with Ms Robertson and Ms McElhone, and the younger actors, delivered a very interesting and heartwarming story.
As for the plot, I enjoyed the cooking, keeping it simple, the library, the music, meeting the bar owner at the end of the movie. It seemed to me that someone spent a lot of attention to detail with this movie.
The Expendables 3 (2014)
bring the popcorn
OK, it's not as dramatic as most of the movies the lead players would play, but it's a bit of fun and I quite enjoyed it.
The first was, err sort of ok, the second was cringeworthy, but this was fun.
Don't expect any suspenseful, dramatical stuff with a plot, this is just a fun action movie you can enjoy and laugh at.
The Revenant (2015)
worth watching
I originally thought a role such of this was out of DiCaprio's range. I was quite mistaken. He played the part very well, and to my uninformed eye, quite realistically. I felt quite involved with his struggle and liked the insight into the Indians interaction with the various invaders. The movie was interesting, and involving. It definitely deserves the M15+ rating but the violence didn't detract from the story line. It's worth watching, you truly feel involved with this interesting story.
The Legend of Bagger Vance (2000)
if you liked "The Natural" you may well like this
I was looking for something a little different to watch, and a golf movie that wasn't like Caddyshack was different to me.
I enjoyed the old cars, the shops, the attention to the background detail. I have no idea if it is historically realistic, but it was great for a story.
Close to the end, I felt that it reminded me of another sporting movie, The Natural, and then I found that Robert Redford was the director.
I really enjoyed this story, it kept me involved to the end. Will Smith was different to the usual brash character he plays, though still with his own flair and very good, Matt Damon can do anything and do it well, and while Charlize Theron didn't have as big a role, I felt her contribution added the final touches to an interesting story. It makes me want to find the novel and see if it is as good.
I thought I'd be able to put on a movie and fast forward a bit if it got boring, it wasn't. I watched every minute and at the end wished there was more of the story. Groovy movie.
Brock (2016)
OK movie, but it's a drama and I believe the directors stretched it a bit
I enjoyed the movie of Peter Brock. It was a good yarn. In my opinion though, this is not the story of Peter Brock as the people who knew him would have written or would like to see. In my opinion this movie is the impression of the writers and directors who sought to make an interesting movie given the material at hand. I suspect the writers are not familiar with motor racing, and the legend that was Mr Peter Brock.
The character portrayed was quite interesting, though I suspect any autograph hunter would have immediately seem the difference in personalities between the Peter Brock that was presented, and the Peter Brock that they met.
Having said that however, it was an interesting movie or mini series. The first part especially was really good. I enjoyed the historical bits they chose to put in which included the footage of his Austin A30, his many Toranas, Commodores and his other ventures such as the Ford Sierras.
If you're a Peter Brock fan, as so many of us are, don't take it to heart, it's just a movie. I'm sure the next people to write the movie of Peter Brock will depict Peter, the King of the Mountain, in a different light.
The portrayal of Allan Moffat was OK, though to my mind a little off. A fierce and calculating competitor, though he was not the focus of the movie, it would be nice to have seen him played a little closer to the truth.
I believe they spun out the polariser part far too long. While it was definitely a factor in his relationship with Holden, and an important one at that, it was given too much time and became quite boring. It seemed to occupy a longer part in the movie, relatively speaking, than it did in real life.
I also would have enjoyed more of his later racing, and his life after racing, which seemed to be quite rushed. There was a lot more to this man than was presented in the second part of this mini series.
McFarland, USA (2015)
Fun, heartwarming movie
I found this a really engaging and interesting movie.
I'd like to feel that this is a bit of an insight into the town and its story, as so many other reviews have referred to the real story behind it. This adds to the flavour for me.
I enjoyed the characters, I enjoyed the story, and I liked the way the team built a relationship and the coach played his part. It's like a few other movies, but still individual and interesting.
The ending may be a little predictable, but I found this a fun tale, one I'd watch with the kids and probably watch again.
A fun family movie.
Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day (2014)
if you're a dad, with a brady bunch kind of family, you will get this
it doesn't go to plan, things stuffup. my mix and match family and i were in the lounge doing other stuff, this came on mostly to amuse my 4 year old.
we all ended up watching it to the end.
there's some cringe-worthy moments, but there's also some moments that remind you why family is so important and make you feel good. the kids all wanted to stay up past their bedtime to see the end. i'm no critic, i just like a good story.
this is a good story, kinda like little miss sunshine. there's some bits where you just have to have a break, cringe, hide. but after that, it's a good family show.
like the others, when skippy took off and he chased him, i'm like no way are you catching him ever. however it's a movie and it's in the plot. well done i reckon. good yarn
Dead Drop (2013)
good acting and movie, but the plot kinda left a hole
for me, this movie was a "close but no cigar". not a blockbuster but a reasonable tale.
my spoiler alert though is the ending. after building up to a number of possible endings, it just kinda fizzed, which was a shame.
the movie really had potential in my mind it's definitely not a blockbuster, i think a "worth watching", but the end left me disappointed.
i thought the acting and the direction was quite OK. it wasn't Spielberg, but it was OK.
i guess if you're after a "feel good" ending, then this isn't the movie for you.
