Griselda (2024)
Sofia Vergara was too tall, too skinny, and too pretty to portray Griselda.
So, let me get this straight: You expect me to believe that a 4 foot 11 inch, 200 pound, semi-illiterate woman who stuttered when she spoke was the head of a Colombian Cocaine Cartel empire?
Just look at the pictures! She was a woman that spent way too much time on her hair, her nails and her makeup! Plus, her clothes and jewelry were all big and gaudy. Plus, she enjoyed cooking and throwing big parties! Griselda had a good relationship with all her family members and was beloved by all.
More than likely she was the fall guy for the real culprits!
I think that she just took the blame to save someone else.
If everything that has been written about her, were true, she would have been locked up in a federal penitentiary for life! She would have never been released from prison. Supposedly, she was released because she had terminal cancer, but she still lived another 10 years as a free woman!
Finally, Sofía Vergara was too tall, too thin and too pretty to portray this woman. Griselda was short, fat, and of mixed race. She was sexy, but based on Eurocentric standards of beauty, she was not conventionally pretty. But, when she smiled, she had dimples! People with dimples are too cute, to be evil!
Dune: Part Two (2024)
A horrible, ugly disaster of a movie!
First, the movie is 3 hours long! No movie should be that long!
If you were to mix The Passion of the Christ, Apocalypto, Star Wars, The Mummy, The Matrix, and old black and white World War II news reels, you would get this horrible, ugly, disaster of a movie!
Out of what perverted, demented mind did this horrific film come to be?
The fake languages are so annoying! (Frankly, it is an insult to polyglots like myself!)
The villains, all look like terminally-ill cancer patients! Why?
Except for the main villain, he wears a cheap fat suit! Why couldn't they hire a real fat actor? Why go with the cheap rubber prosthetics?
The cannibalism makes me want to vomit! So gross!
Don't get me started on the costumes! Horrible! Ugly! Creepy Outfits!
Cocaine Godmother (2017)
THE SCRIPT! THE CASTING! THE MUSIC! THE WARDROBE!
Lifetime movies are usually pretty accurate, but this movie is full of inaccuracies and basically pure fiction! The writers took way too many creative liberties!
First of all, Griselda had a good relationship with her mother, and she took care of her until the very end. Also, her mother was a mulata, meaning she was mixed race.
Second, Griselda was not a lesbian. She had a particular fondness for tall, muscular black men.
Third, Griselda did not end up alone. She was surrounded by her extended family. She had her sisters, her nieces and nephews! A huge family.
Also, Catherine Zeta-Jones was TOO TALL . .. TOO THIN . . . And TOO PRETTY to portray Griselda. Griselda was short, fat and not conventionally pretty.
Furthermore, the wardrobe was totally off! Griselda was the original "buchona". She loved wearing tons of makeup, gaudy jewelry, long red fingernails, and she never wore dresses! Always tight pants with loose fitting blouses to cover up her muffin top.
In the movie, she was portrayed as being a cocaine addict. Nothing could be farther from the truith. Cocaine addicts are skinny! Griselda's vice was food! She indulged in overeating!
Finally, the music, all throughout the movie they played salsa. Salsa is popular in the Latin community, but the Cumbia is the national music of Colombia! Not a single cumbia was included in the movie's soundtrack.
Black Adam (2022)
Dwayne Johnson is so handsome!
For all you, Dwayne Johnson fans, this is the movie is for you! Dwayne Johnson is in perfect shape! There is no padding in his suit! All his muscles are real! Perfection in the form of a man! And, his face! He has perfectly chiseled features! So so handsome!
The movie is action-packed! Non-stop action! There are a few comedic moments in the movie, too! And, some Easter eggs for the hardcore fans!
I loved this movie so much, I saw it 3 times in the same week! Excellent movie for the entire family to enjoy. (Except for very small children, they might get scared with some of the fight scenes towards the end of the movie. I think children over the age of 10 can enjoy this movie and not get too scared.)
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022)
Boring! Too much boring dialogue! Not enough action for a super hero movie!
For "an action film", there is not enough ACTION! Way too much dialogue! BORING DIALOGUE! Like the characters are attempting to have these deep meaningful conversations, but it is just boring dialogue!
The thing that bothered me the most was Namour was supposed to be indigenous, native to the Americas, yet he had this huge mustache and beard! THE NATIVE AMERICANS DID NOT HAVE FACIAL HAIR! IT WASN'T UNTIL THE ARRIVAL OF THE SPANISH CONQUISTADORES WHO HAD MIXED RACED CHILDREN WITH THE NATIVE WOMEN, THAT YOU BEGAN TO SEE THAT TRAIT ON MEXICAN MEN. TENOCH HUERTA, THE ACTOR IS A MESTIZO MAN, A MAN OF MIXED RACE. SPANISH AND NATIVE AMERICAN.
Also, the African people, like the Native Americans are victims of COLONIZATION, they would never wage a war against each other or much less towards a super power!
Amo y señor (1984)
"La Tóxica"
This couple have a "love/hate" relationship. The slapping each other across the face! The rough hard kisses! This type of telenovela could not be made today! Arnaldo André was in his prime! What a beautiful man! The dimples! The smile! Too handsome! There is also a bit of comedy. Comic relief in between all the drama and sexual tension!
Stolen Education (2013)
The triumph of the human spirit.
Beautiful documentary! Keep a box of Kleenex near by. You will be bawling by the end of it. It does have a bittersweet ending though.
Roadrunner: A Film About Anthony Bourdain (2021)
Sad and depressing!
The movie focuses primarily on the early years of his television career on a Cook's Tour on the Food Network and the very end of his career on CNN's Part's Unknown. It completely ignores his time on the Travel Channel's No Reservations show, which was the show that gave him worldwide fame. The documentary also ignored his early years as a chef! They did not interview any of his coworkers who worked alongside him in the hot, busy kitchen, before he became famous! May he rest in peace!
The Harder They Come (1972)
Excellent movie! Great soundtrack!
Excellent movie! Great soundtrack! You will laugh! You will cry! All at the same time! Definitely a classic! Tip: Even if you are a native English speaker, the Jamaican accent might be difficult to understand, so watch it with the captions on.
The Turning (2020)
SCARY MOVIE!
This is a scary movie with a really confusing ending!
Just Mercy (2019)
A modern day Greek tragedy accompanied by a really bad soundtrack!
Just Mercy is reminiscent of a Greek tragedy in the fact that most of the culminating drama occurs off screen and is later narrated by the lawyer Bryan Stevenson (portrayed by Michal B. Jordan) via jail house interviews, phone conversations, cassette tape recordings, or court documents. For courtroom drama aficionados this is right up their ally! But, for the modern day "viral video sensation" generation that expects instant gratification in 30 seconds or less, this not going to cut it! It has way too much mumble-jumble for the average person to understand. Legal terms that are not a part of the layman's lexicon.
SPOILER ALERT: The average movie goer does not want hear about the events that transpired, after the fact, they want to see it all happen right in front of their very eyes! They want to see Walter "Johnny D" McMillian (portrayed by Jamie Foxx) at the church barbecue, (It was actually a church fish fry, but they changed it to a bbq in the movie.) while the beautiful, blonde teenager is being brutally murdered at the dry cleaners! They want to see him have a salacious love affair with a white woman.. (*He had an affair with an older, white married woman and not the teenager that was murdered.) This thrill-seeking audience does not want to hear about Sheriff Tom Tate's unconventional tactics, they want to see him in action! They want to see it all! They want to experience all the "titillating details" first hand.
Also, Walter "Johnny D" McMillian served 6 years on death row! That is a long, long time! Yet, except for a few fuzzy, out-of-focus pictures, the audience does not see his babies at the time of his arrest. By the time, he was released, they were practically grown. It would have been more compelling to see them portrayed as children.
Finally, with all the beautiful music out there, this movie needs a new sound track! Music is powerful! The soundtrack to a movie is critical to it's success. It can literally make or break a movie! I would have rated the movie a 10, if they had just had a better soundtrack.
Kudos to the movie makers for using real 60 minutes footage. The news reporter, Ed Bradley is an American icon, but he started out as a humble public school teacher. One of the last interviews of Ed Bradley that I saw was of him dancing with Sir Mick Jagger at the Jazz Parade in New Orleans. I'm too emotional! This movie made me cry, but for all the wrong reasons!
FUNNY ANECDOTE: My boyfriend kept asking me questions during the movie. Until one guy turned around and told us to stop talking. Later on, in the parking lot, I was wiping down the frost off my windshield, when I spotted the man who shushed me getting into his truck. So, I started proclaiming in a very loud voice, "If they tell you to sit down, STAND UP! If they tell you to be quiet, SPEAK UP!" The guy started shaking his head laughing and gave me the thumbs up!
Jumanji: The Next Level (2019)
Absolutely hilarious!
This movie will make you laugh! It is just too, too funny! Dwayne Johnson is just as handsome as ever. Kevin Hart is absolutely hilarious! But, Jack Black steals the show again!
Richard Jewell (2019)
Excellent movie!
It is a bittersweet movie that will make you laugh and cry, all at the same time. The sad thing is that it is based on a true story. Poor guy! He was a hero, and did not deserve to be treated so badly.
Terminator: Dark Fate (2019)
Highly Entertaining!
This movie is a fast-paced, highly-entertaining movie! I enjoyed all the special effects and the funny one-liners! Some of the references to the previous movies, were clearly intended to make the audience laugh. But . . . SPOILER ALERT: But . . . the actual premise of the movie? Was the audience supposed to laugh about that, too? Because it is completely ridiculous! A 4'11" Mexican woman is sooo important to the fate of the world! The whole time, we are lead to believe that she is the mother of the future savior, but then, it is revealed that she will lead an army! Ha! Ha! Ha! Too funny! Then, the way, they braided her hair like a UFC fighter about to enter the octagon! I couldn't stop laughing! Plus, the actress portraying Dani is actually Colombian! I only wish the late Lupe Ontiveros had lived to see this movie. (She portrayed the Latina maid in over 150 Hollywood films.)
Joker (2019)
A MASTER PIECE!
"A roller-coaster of emotions!" "You will laugh! You will cry!"
"Like peeling the many layers of an onion!" SPOILER ALERT:
It's sad that he is mentally-ill. It's sad that he has no real friends. No siblings! No father! But, he has his mother! He has a nice apartment! He has a job! He lives in a modern city where he has access to all the amenities of a large modern city! Being "crazy" was the card he was given and he must learn to deal with it. Being crazy is not against the law. It's when he started making poor choices, lashing out with misplaced hostility, that there is a problem! Or maybe, that is what he wanted? To end up in the hospital? Where he doesn't have to deal with the stress of real life, and just enjoy his delusions?
Excellent movie! Academy-Awards for everyone! Especially, Joaquin Phoenix!
Shaft (2019)
GUARANTEED TO MAKE YOU LAUGH!
This movie is full of racial and misogynistic stereotypes. Not to mention gratuitous violent scenes. But, somehow it works! Too, too funny! You will laugh! SPOILER ALERT: One of the funniest things in the movie was the search for "Gordito". I don't know if the writers did this on purpose. But, in Spanish "gordo" means "fat". And, when you add "-ito" to the end it becomes the equivalent of "Little Fat Boy". I kept thinking "Gordito" was going to be a fat midget in a zoot suit and a giant machine gun! "Gordito" turned out to be nothing like his nickname. But, just imagining him was hilarious!
Superfly (2018)
Hilarious!
In my mho, this movie is soooo bad! It reminded me of a bad SNL skit. I laughed the entire time! Trevor Jackson cannot act! He is a terrible actor! This fact becomes blatantly apparent in the scene with Jason Mitchell at the "furniture store". It is painful to watch! Jason's acting looks real, convincing and natural. While, Trevor looks like he's struggling to remember his lines, and talking in a dull, monotone voice. My boyfriend loved the movie. He said, "It was action-packed!" I guess it's a guy flick?
Hands of Stone (2016)
Beautiful Movie!
This movie reminds me of the Venezuelan telenovelas I used to watch as a child.(Venezuelan telenovelas were world renown, They used to be transmitted here in the U.S., before Hugo Chavez shut down RCTV!) How the film makers were able to jam pack an entire "telenovela" into an hour and a half is amazing! I won't ruin the movie for you, but this movie has everything! Love! Abandonment! Eating disorders! Language barriers! Learning disabilities. Social inequality! Racial issues! Organized crime! Politics! A little bit of boxing! But, mostly love and music. Lots of music. I need to buy the soundtrack, when it comes out! It's funny and sad, all at the same time.
SPOILER ALERT: You would think this movie was only for the guys, but it is actually a chick flick in disguise! Edgar Ramirez is gorgeous and in perfect shape! Plus, you get to see Usher's derriere!
The Wolfpack (2015)
Even the title is insulting!
SPOILER ALERT: Comparing a group of young Latino boys to a pack of wolves is racist. So, even the title is insulting to the Latino community. It is full of stereotypes against Latinos. (That they are lazy, alcoholic, superstitious, sexist, have too many children, etc. ) The boys stop talking to their dad. In one scene, Mukunda KICKS his dad and yells, "MOVE!" The children do not understand their father's plight. They do not know what it means to be a poor, Peruvian immigrant.
The father loves them so much. He taught them how to play guitar, brought them the movies, they requested. As children he let them roller-skate in the house, dance and jump on the beds! From time to time, the family would go on special trips around the city.
The father is kind and patient. Even though, the film makers would rather have us believe otherwise. They keep playing this creepy music, every time he's about to appear in a scene, similar to what the makers of Jaws did every time the shark was about to make an appearance.
