The Walking Dead (2010)
Still watching, not sure why
This show is top average - concept is fine for sci-fi lovers, cast more or less acceptable, costumes are well done, yet dialogues mostly are poorly written and way too predictable and repeating. That truly disturbs me while watching, after you see the same discussions for several times, you just fast forward those parts as you perfectly know, what is going to be told and answered. Some moments I was wondering, why I keep watching, but like all series there is something addictive.
There are also some moments, when I am completely lost why characters do not use information and skills they have learned before. For instance, that Michonne was using walkers in chains as disguise from walkers - that was used by Andrea, also Governor with his team realized it, but did not use it. Also in the beginning, when they new that walkers can be anywhere, most of them were wondering around without any weapon or tool. And Lori with her pregnancy test - why she couldn't pee on it inside the house? Why she went in the dark meadow with no weapon? The same goes for covering yourself with walkers guts - they used it just few times, but I think that smart thing for them would be to keep fresh guts in the drums somewhere around in case large herd of walkers comes around - maybe from farm there would be more people saved.
One more weird thing is that walkers are kind of clumsy and goes around making strange sounds, so I am also confused why in so many cases they just appear suddenly as it is quite obvious that they are not able to sneak quietly. So, why so? There are many things to wonder about, and these things upsets me a lot, yet it just a show...
*** UPDATE *** So this is season 7 already. Yet, another season, where walkers are least of the threats, which is good and bad at the same time. They seems to be an issue only in large groups, otherwise, looks super simple to live with them being around.
7 season brings different approach by dividing sets and characters by showing in some series just one story. This is good, that gives broader feeling and larger scale of what is happening in different places, more details about certain characters, yet these episodes are stretched too long, that way loosing clear understanding of time line and it gets easy to forget what actually happened to the others.
Still I cannot figure out why they are not taking yachts or ships/ferries and take off in the ocean - that would keep them safe from walkers, have access to food (fish - most likely a lot, as few past years people do not carry out massive fishing).
Keen to know what is happening to Daryl, also have some hopes up for Carl to finally prove him self not only hot headed, but also clever figuring out, how to deal with Negan.
Dirty Grandpa (2016)
De Niro - but why?
This is movie full with cliché jokes and annoying acts. I barely managed to watch till the end - not really sure for what age group this movies is created. My deepest condolences go to Robert De Niro. Why would such great actor take part in this kind of movie? Is it really that tight in show business these days? Also Zack Efron - actor with looks and talent to dance and sing got to waste his talent in film like this. Recent movies seems that he plays always the same person - hot and self-obsessed dumb party guy. We are Your Friends, Neighbors (1 & 2), Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates - all the same. Also one of main character gets in the crossroads, trip with crazy grandpa makes him doubt his life choices - work, marriage, which is soon to come. Of course he realizes that he need take on old talent as photographer and meets girl he falls in love with. At weddings he takes decision to not marry his fiancé, who of course turns out to be crazy cheating lady. Nothing new, nothing surprising.
Allegiant (2016)
Nothing new
Honestly this part really misses on adding any new layers of main characters - same approaches, dialogues. There is no development, yet scenery changes, but in a disappointing way. There are moments, when they are again in high risk situations, yet manage to have some passionate kissing scenes, when all people they know may be brainwashed. That kills the story. Tris is way to easy to manipulate considering what she has been through and experience base she has, right hand of main governor is always a bloodthirsty idiot - not sure why considering that Four's mother is kind of willing to achieve peace. David is kind of clever man, his problem is underestimation of so called damaged and Tris. And then again - why so, if they have monitored them since ever. They know, what they are capable of. All in all this do not look good - I have not read the books, but I believe that this could be disappointing to readers considering the sales and positive reviews of books.
Batoru rowaiaru (2000)
Searching for relation with Hunger Games
After Hunger Games first movie came out, there were people referencing Battle Royale as possible and even better predecessor of HG movie. That surely intrigued me to watch it, and to make my own assumption. First thing to know - it is Japanese cinema, be aware of that as it differs from typical Hollywood movie you may be expecting. All along the movie I was disturbed by awful acting and unrealistic scenes - teenagers still walk after getting eight bullets in the chest and manage to speak out one passage of text, shoot someone and only then in very unconvincing manner drop down dead. This may work in Japanese cinema, but it was repulsive and hard to watch or even consider that this might be real. At some scenes it is truly ridiculous.
Also there are way too many characters to create some emotional bond with the viewer. Many characters are overplayed.
I would not link this movie with HG only because of the idea that there are teenagers forced to kill each other. Each has own purpose and setting, yet I would say that HG provide more believable reasoning for all killing game than BR.
Boyhood (2014)
Good grade just for effort?
With all the buzz before movie came out I was thrilled to finally watch it. Turned out to be huge disappointment. After a while movie was nominated in several categories and also winning many of them at Academy Awards, Golden Globes and others. I was truly confused and all good words and awards of movie seamed like undeserved acknowledgment - like the good grade that teacher gives to student for effort, but not for the great result. Yes, approach of the movie making is unique and requires patience and lot of resources, but that does not matter if story is weak.
All in all movie is considerably boring and main character may annoy you by lack of personality and action. I believe that lifeline of most viewers would turn out in a lot more interesting story than current result.
Ekskursante (2013)
Spirit all the way through the hardships
This is one of great movies illustrating war struggles and hardships that tear apart families, create enemies out of neighbors and friends, take people by different paths. Movie presents many unfair causes that were lived and witnessed by little girl, meanwhile main role actress, even just being tiny girl, shows internally strong personality that learns very quickly to adapt and manage her way out of high risk situations.
Little girl represents nation spirit that will live no matter what. As in the end she sits on the fence and sees men with guns coming for her, she is solid and strong by saying that they can deport her again because she knows the way back home.
The Longest Ride (2015)
One movie - two stories
Movie tells two love stories - one already lived, the other just beginning. Main storyline is about cowboy-bull rider and young art loving student with no relations to cowboys' lifestyle. Yet, both find common path and are falling in love. After couple saving life of an old man, the movie includes parallel love story by time traveling through letters and introducing to old man's one true love.
Movie is classic and quite predictable romance. All in all movie is good, but youngsters-love birds are not convincing in their roles, that way old man's love story actually gives more sense of reality and makes secondary story more attractive and interesting than main story. Not sure, whether young actors were supposed to act in a way that would most fit to cliché teenage school movies (awkward flirting scenes, artificial laughter etc.). Acting smashes movie from possible top-romance level of "Dear John" and "Notebook" to strongly average drama/romance.
Movie with large potential, but unredeemed by weak and "school-ish" acting of main characters.
Pitch Perfect 2 (2015)
Weak pitch
Already first movie had several scenes that made viewer feel uncomfortable and ashamed on behalf of movie creators, yet it had something that made you watch it till the end (attractive actors, nice musical performances etc.). Classic story of rebellious, gifted girl that is required to fit in particular group with no wish to do so wrapped in candy cotton of college love story. Apart from too many vomit scenes, movie still managed to qualify as good movie for late teenagers.
Unfortunately second movie came with large disappointment - plot turned out lazy, scenes exceeding comedy awkwardness level, over-plaid German characters and many more. Most jokes in movie were overused and did not fit right in particular scenes. If first movie let you enjoy the musical performances, then this part made me wish for less musical performances as most were unpalatable.
Not clear which audience group movie creators tried to address with humor based on overweight, vomit, improper culture framing and top level awkwardness. This is the case of first movie being a lot better and maybe it would be even better if it stayed that way - one movie.
