Nymphomaniac: Vol. II (2013)
Most sexist thing I've seen in ages...
...and apart from that really just a horrible fail on so many levels.
While I thought Volume 1 was interesting in some ways, exploring female sexuality in such a thought provoking way, Volume 2 is nothing but an insult on people's intelligence.
A movie very badly disguised as shocking, avantgarde and feminist but it really comes down to a white old man explaining to a somewhat troubled young woman her own rather eccentric sexuality, culminating in absolution by said man. The only good thing I can say about this is that Charlotte Gainsbourg and Stellan Skarsgard both deliver - as they always do. But even that can't save this mess.
I really wish Lars von Trier would stop making movies and therefore stop inflicting upon the world his own disturbing view on womanhood.
Unbelievable (2019)
This is a diamond - TV can't get any better
I hardly ever write reviews but this is so good, I just had to turn some of this experience into written words.
The acting - just all of it - is absolutely outstanding. The three lead-women should be up for every tv-award there is.
Then there's the writing and directing, which is probably the only appropriate take on the extremely sensitive topic this show is dealing with I, have ever witnessed on TV.
I watch a lot of Detective-Shows and movies and it's usually about the "thrill of catching the bad guy" or about the viewer's chance to "look evil in the face". And I'm not saying that's all bad - there's a lot of excellent stuff like this out there. But this brilliant show, for a much needed change, is actually about the victims and what such a horrible experience does to you. It's about a certain and unfortunately often overlooked kind of bravery and about commitment.
Don't miss out on this gem!
Game of Thrones: The Long Night (2019)
The purpose of bad lighting...
I have never before written such a review but this time it feels like I can't take the complaints about the lighting any longer. I'm not gonna say much about the episode overall just that for me it felt right and absolutely brilliantly executed.
As for the lighting: people have been complaining that the lighting was so bad, they couldn't see properly and therefore the whole episode was wasted. I'm pretty sure though the "Help! I can't see anything"-feeling was very much intended. Think about it: it's dark, it's cold, there's snow everywhere, add a crazy load of fire - what else would a night like that look like??? In such circumstances nobody can see properly, so why should the viewers?? Good lighting and a crystal clear night would have been so wrong and artificial. The way it was done made me feel the tension, the chaos and confusion of war even more.
The makers might even have anticipated the complaining and they did it all the same - therefore very brave execution in terms of cinematography! And overall just a real masterpiece!
