Witches in the Woods (2019)
It has its moments...
But overall it is fairly average. The Canadian snow packed countryside is the most interesting part to be honest. The stereotypical a-hole football player sexual assault guy is well represented so that is pretty boring.
Unearth (2020)
Put it back into the ground....quickly!
If you want to waste 90 minutes of your life, you are in luck with Unearth. The first hour of the film is boring family bickering... the last 30 minutes is hardly much better however.
The Professor and the Madman (2019)
I generally do not read
Reviews of a film prior to watching it... and I did not in this case either. I realize it has already been said, but the critics panning this movie obviously have ulterior motives or are frankly idiots. Sean Penn was absolutely amazing and the entire cast overall was very impressive. Eddie Marsan as Muncie was also incredible.
Polar (2019)
ignore the bad reviews
I had read many bad reviews of Polar and was bored and decided to watch recently. I cannot believe that anyone would actually take this seriously and it is actually a good deal of fun...
Way Down (2021)
It's as average
As average gets. It is quite predictable and was kind of the sort of Netflix film you would have appreciated in the middle of the pandemic.
Son: The Guest (2018)
Unofficially these are the most phony
Reviews that I have ever seen reviewing a film/series on IMDB. Seriously nearly every single one has only one review by the reviewer and guess what...they are almost all 10s!!!!!!!!!!!
Now for a legit review. It is a good series. It is a bit on the gory side so if that bothers you either fast forward or deal with it. I do like the fact that there are not so many goofy comic effect moments that you see in so many of these series as well.
Monster Hunter (2020)
I think that a 3 grade is fair...
The movie was not horrible. But even for the subject matter it is very dumbed down. Very... I will have to say that I had never seen a film rip off LOTR (twice with Shelob and Smaug) as well as Pitch Black (the creatures hiding in underground warrens that cannot handle sunlight). That is pretty shameless.
Epidemiya (2019)
A very good start a decent finish...
I landed on a 6 as the rating as I would have given the first half of the series a grade of 8 and the second half a 4. Overall it was not as predictable as so many end of civilization/pandemic series (that we are for obvious reasons going to be seeing even more of in the future), but the last few episodes degenerated into predictable relationship mending/bickering etc... Overall worth a watch but if you start becoming bored be advised it will likely continue to disappoint a bit.
The Queen's Gambit (2020)
I rarely ever give out a 10....
But I was tempted with this Netflix original. The first half of the series gets a 10, the second an 8, but highly recommended!
Army of the Dead (2021)
If you enjoy the Fast and Furious movies...
You still may be insulted by this movie. What garbage... I only give scores of 1 for movies that are completely offensive as well as awful and this movie only offended my senses so it gets a 2.
Marianne (2019)
Everyone that I recommended
Marianne to, could not handle it. Most were disturbed but I loved it. It was genuinely frightening...yes some of the scenes were a bit graphic and disturbing but I did not find it at all predictable like so many other horror series.
A Dark Path (2020)
I stuck with this thinking
That there was no way that it could remain this boring. I was wrong. Do not waste your time.
Spider-Man 2 (2004)
Whoa Whoa Whoa !
IMDb viewers rated this a top 250 film? What in the world? This film was weak....much weaker than the first one which was average at best.
The cheesy storyline with MJ was tedious the first 4 times it was run thru the wringer in the film. I realize that the studios need to push Kirsten Dunst for the 15-22 year old audiences but this was dreadful! I can't believe that Sam Raimi attached his name to this crap.
There were a few pluses: (Alfred Molina was solid as Otto Octavius, but nowhere in willem defoe's league... he would have been better served as an auxiliary villain than the sole one)... JK Simmons is great as J Jameson (why not more of him?) This was worse than a Julia Roberts film.
Boogeyman (2005)
Pure garbage
I'm not a horror movie snob. I'm really not. I've seen enough to know what is bad, amateurish etc etc.
This film takes it to new depths. It has a senseless plot. It has a horrible and stupid ending. None of the characters are remotely interesting. Barry Watson is awful. Is 7th Heaven still on the air? Because this kid needs some serious TV work.
Oh, and if that is not enough: it's possible the most predictable horror movie, that I've ever seen. I can't believe that I made it thru the entire film.
Be warned!
Resident Evil (2002)
A nice addition to the zombie genre
The first time I saw this film as a rental, it seemed pretty average. After multiple viewings via cable (it seems to be a favorite on HBO), my opinion has gone well up.
The film does not necessarily have tons of scares, but plenty of suspense and action. I've always believed that Anderson has done a great job of creating isolation spaces, and this is no different.
The acting is also decent, Michelle Rodriguez is not great, but let's face it is great to look at. I like Eric Mabius quite a bit, and Milla is as convincing as one might be with a supermodel kicking ass etc.
All in all I'd recommend the film, however the sequel was another matter.
Rose Red (2002)
Uncommonly Average
This film certainly has its moments. The sets are not at all bad, and it certainly has created a decent mood, but for the most part has few scares.
As far as the acting, why go with so many washed-up/never were type actors? I mean none of them are awful, but they are completely undistinguished in their careers. I must admit enjoying Julian Sands, but the memories of his fun/twisted roles are now ruined! (Warlock, Boxig Helena). Now that is a B grade actor to be proud of.
Instead you get a fairly predictable plot, with fairly predictable yeoman-like performances. The effects are not very impressive either. So if you are a huge King fan you are going to see it anyway (or actually already have).
***Also does anyone else get sick of the old, "this character is a goner for sure, only they pop up again later in the movie" trick?***
The Thing (1982)
If this isn't my favorite horror/sci-fi film of all time
It's in my top 3! I have had it on DVD for years, but I'll never forget seeing it when it first came out in the early 1980s. It scared the bejeezus out of me, and to this day after multiple viewings is still chilling (pun intended).
I've never been as huge of a fan of John Carpenter as a lot of folks are... I do admire his originality on many films and he is a master at creating an atmosphere of suspense, but this is absolutely his Citizen Kane.
You all know the premise, but one area that I really enjoy is the solid character acting. All of the actors (with the exception of Kurt Russell, and he's never done anything better than this) are generally well-regarded and very experienced character actors (many primarily from TV), and they are very believable and just do incredibly professional yeoman-like work. I particularly enjoy Wilford Brimley as the scientist Blair.
Also as others as pointed out the HP Lovecraft influences are there, and I feel that perhaps more than any other film captures his style of slow realization of impending doom and otherworldly horror.
A rare "10" in my book, and is absolutely a must see.
Dead Birds (2004)
A good low-budget horror flick
After reading the plot summary, I was a little leery, but am glad that I rented this film.
A solid cast led by I. Washington (I've liked him for years, and am glad that he is getting more roles) shine in a period (civil war) horror piece.
It's a genuinely frightening movie in parts, and warning it is a bit on the gory side as well.
Henry Thomas is merely so-so but frankly he's not a very strong actor. The shots of the house are very eerie in the daylight and overall the atmosphere seems very well fleshed out.
A recommended chiller!
Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy (2004)
Horrid
I had heard good and bad reviews of this film so I went in with no huge expectations. Thank God! I couldn't imagine how much worse of an experience it would have been if I expected anything... such as laughs! Will Ferrell is heading down a slippery slope if he keeps doing garbage this bad. Honestly with a cast this good (Steve Carell, Vince Vaughn) I would have expected a few laughs. Even the cameos from Luke Wilson and others were as lame as it gets.
Also has Christina Applegate done any good work...ever? She seems sub Sci-fi t and a material to me.
I hope that Will Ferrell enjoys the millions...please invest it well and never subject your fans to this type of garbage again.
White Noise (2005)
Good film with genuine scares
I enjoyed this film quite a bit. I'd been scared off by some negative reviews when it was first released, and went the rental route.
I've always liked Michael Keaton and he was solid. The premise was interesting, and there were plenty of genuine scares! The acting overall was solid and believable.
The film was generally well-paced, and while the ending might not have been the best part of the film, overall it didn't seem to take the easy way out. I also enjoyed the role of technology in adding to the general ambiance and settings.
In any event, a good film and this is from someone that has seen a lot in this genre.
