Call Me by Your Name (2017)
An absorbing pleasure to watch
There are many very wonderful scenes in this film, but none quite so moving as Timothee Charlomet in the closing credits. Timothee's performance throughout was just so natural and convincing that I'm tempted to say it was flawless (he should have received the Oscar!). I loved him, and can't wait to see him in The King. I thought Aimee Hammer two rungs below Timothee - somewhat less convincing (in my humble opinion). Just not so natural in the role (maybe intentionally, and he's certainly cute). Michael Stuhlbarg's advice to his son near the end was one of the more surprising aspects of the film - didactic in form, and all the more welcome for that (after all, some good solid instruction in tolerance never goes amiss among our species). What a lucky boy to have such a generous, sensible, plainly loving father! Finally, Michael's smiles, facial expressions and intonations reminded me so much of the great Robin Williams (they could so easily be brothers!) and added even more to the pleasure of the film).
The Drummer and the Keeper (2017)
Spellbinding
This movie kept me spellbound, a difficult feat (believe me). Both of the main characters, one with bipolar and the other with Asperger's, were entirely credible, amazingly so, as was the (rocky) development of their friendship. Heartwarming, yes, but painful at times also. Good music too. But this is an Irish production and the accents are sometimes difficult to follow. While I stuck with it (and am very glad I did so), it would have been a relief to be able to turn on subtitles!
