J.T. (1969 TV Movie)
10/10
Beautiful Little Film
15 October 2015
I came across "J.T." completely by accident while looking for something else. I'm not sure how I missed this growing up. It seems, through the reviews and comments I've read, that a lot of people were exposed to this wonderful film in elementary school (or by reading the book adaptation). I'm really surprised I didn't come across either in elementary school back in the 1970's.

This is a touching, bittersweet tale of a young, shy boy living in poverty in New York City who accidentally comes across an old, battered, hungry alley cat. The boy befriends the cat and decides to feed him and nurse him back to health, providing as much comfort and warmth as he can.

Because of his surroundings J.T. displays an outward appearance of indifference to the world around him, but the love and compassion he carries within him shines through as he helps his new friend.

There's a very touching scene near the end of the film where J.T.'s teacher keeps him after school to work on an essay he hasn't completed. Concerned about his lack of effort, she obviously cares about him but is unable to see through his withdrawn exterior to the kind, loving boy underneath. She urges him to write about something he cares about, finally asking him if he cares about anything. When he leaves she discovers he has drawn a picture of his new friend.

"J.T." is a story of friendship, compassion, love, and kindness in the face of difficult circumstances. The movie is a tearjerker that ends on a note of hope.

This is a film for the young and old alike and one not to be missed. Sometimes happy accidents occur and I'm glad this one did for me and I was able to see this lovely film.
