Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (2018)
Should have been set in 2018 along with Riverdale
Very interesting take on Sabrina the teenage Witch and much better than the original series I must say but there are some things that I find rather annoying with the series.
For one, the writing and plot is very cliche at some points and not great and the main character can be annoying as well (Think Salem, Buffy, Charmed, AHS: Coven). And the setting in time is not really needed. This should have just taken place in 2018 so it could have been crossed over with Riverdale because the writing is so similar and the lingo and clothes seem too modern. Harvey even mentions The Goonies which came out in 1985. Also I am all for diversity in characters but in 1962 realistically Ros wouldn't be acknowledged let alone be able to raise a protest. Maybe in the 70s but the 60s is a bit of a stretch.
The three evil bitches are also annoying showing up in almost every episode where they're not really needed.
And wtf is Aunt Hilda fat? Not that it's anything wrong with it but I am used to seeing her thin. It took a while to get used to.
If you're looking for something fun and light and not taken too seriously then this show is it. Although the plot is a bit dark it's not really that scary.
Overall its great to watch if you like supernatural shows but it's not anything new. So it gets 6 stars from me.
Insatiable (2018)
The new Glee
I really really love this show and I think it is something that I have been missing from my list since Glee went off the air. I actually think it's almost better than Glee and they are doing what Glee did wrong...by making it fast paced and having only 12 episodes.
I think if Glee had been only 10-12 eps in each season, it would have went so much better in the latter seasons.
The satire is top notch especially with the Bob character whose sexuality is often teased throughout the series. Also love the satire with hunger.
This show at times can be a bit far fetched like Patty losing all that weight in 3 months and no loose skin or the local pageants being that ridiculous but the heart of it is a lot like the heart of Glee...showing people that the underdog can come on top.
La La Land (2016)
And I ran...I ran so far awayyyyy (at least that's what I wanted to do with this movie)
The best part of the movie is Emma Stone's cute little quirky dance to the I Ran song, trying to get back at Ryan Gosling's character. After that it goes downhill for me and it just seems like every other rom com/musical I've ever seen.
I gave it four stars for that scene alone. That scene definitely should have won an Oscar.
Temptation: Confessions of a Marriage Counselor (2013)
Thank God for Sullivan's sultry voice to save this movie...
The best part of the movie is when they use Jazmine Sullivan's song, "I'm in love with another man"...that part always gives me chills.
After that it goes downhill. I will say this is one of Tyler Perry's best movies, but that's not saying a lot when most of his movies suck.
Good Deeds, The Family that Preys, and this one are his best, but it's only because of the incredible actors like Taraji P., Sanaa in The Family that Preys and Jurnee and Lance that makes Temptation really good. The plot is very weak and the dialogue even weaker. It's amazing that they were able to bring great performances out of the badly written script.
Gotham (2014)
DC tv shows are usually really good compared to Marvel's and this is no exception
I'd been procrastinating to watch this show because I didn't like the fact that it was focused more on Jim Gordon and the villains rather than the early years of Bruce Wayne, but once I saw the first few episodes on Netflix, I was hooked. It is pretty good so far. Not as good as Smallville's first couple of seasons, but it's better than Supergirl, Arrow and The Flash combined. I think the biggest drawback is that they don't give young Bruce enough scenes...I mean come on this is called Gotham for Pete's sake. Also introducing Selina Kyle with her nickname being Cat is kind of another drawback because unless Bruce develops Smallville anemsia (lol), he's going to figure out real quick who Catwoman is when they become their iconic alteregos. Everything else is pretty solid. The acting is not too much except for Jada Pinkett's performance at times is a bit much but I really enjoy watching her character as well...I feel like in some of her scenes she's trying to embody Earth Kitt as Catwoman somewhat in her voice at times which can be annoying but overall she does a really good performance as Fish Mooney and Penguin does a really great performance in his role.
I would highly reccommend anyone who loves DC comics or just like watching crime driven shows in general to watch this because it's not as bad as some have made it out to be and its actually the piece that has been missing from TV since Smallville wrapped up in 2011.
The Lovely Bones (2009)
So so
The premise I think is great and somewhat original, but the execution is not quite there at the end.
If you like the movie Ghost, you will definitely like this movie because it is the young adult version with a bit of Bridge to Terabithia vibes to it.
What I didn't like about the film is that most of the characters are kind of one dimensional, even the main character Susie seems kind of flat. And the neighbor/gay psycho killer didn't really do it for me either. He wasn't very convincing to me as being the killer of young girls (maybe little boys). He had the creepy vibe down but I couldn't help but feel like it would have been better to have another actor play the part...preferably one that actually looks like he would go after young girls/women or perhaps someone who wouldn't have looked the part like Bradley Cooper or Ryan Gosling...the unusual suspects.
I also wished they would have given a bit more background as to why he went after young girls. And their justice wasn't satisfying enough. I was hoping he would have been caught and beat to a bloody pulp in jail and died that way but at least he did die a horrible death although the fall didn't look natural.
It's onw of those movies you watch once and don't watch it again for years.
Love by the 10th Date (2017)
Think Like A Man 3
How many times are they going to do the can't find a man black movies. And they even used some of the same actresses from Think Like A Man...smh.
Predictable, cheesy, and cliche. The only thing different in this is that they put one of the women with a gay sorry "bi" man. So I gave 2 stars for that although it was somewhat disturbing.
Oh and at the end Meagan saying she enough yet got makeup caked up and hair straight to the bone...smh puh-lease
Death Note (2017)
Meh
If you have seen the anime version, don't go into this film thinking you will get to see the brilliant cat and mouse mental game that L and Light play in the series. Light is not even that devious or manipulative or smart for that matter. It is very disappointing. L is not as weird or cooky...I think they chose the wrong actor for him. I also wish they had shown more of their relationship played out because although L and Light did not like each other, they had a great love and respect for each other's mental game which was failed to be shown in the film.
And as for Mia, I liked that they didn't portray her as this dumb blond who only wants to serve and be with Light (she wants to actually be Kira in this), but I wish they would have made her have a death note as well like in the anime. That was one of the main reasons Light got caught and his ultimate downfall. How they spun it in the film was OK but not as brilliant as the series.
Also Ryuk wasn't involved at all in Light's decisions. He was an observer but in the film they make him be so much more which I hated.
Hopefully they make a remake of this in a few years because this did not do justice for the beloved anime.
Star (2016)
It grows on you if you stick with it...
It's a bit corny and cliché at first and takes a while to get into but after episode 4 or 5, it really starts to pick up and you really get used to the melodramatic plot lines (but keep in mind this is a hip-hop soap opera type show so its going to be over the top at times) and the music gets better as well. I think the music is actually more realistic and easier to vibe with than Empires music. Can't wait until they do a collab episode that's going to be fire!
I hope Luscious get to put Star in her place. Somebody needs to.
