The King and I (1956)
A fantastic piece of Cinema History
I personally feel The King and I is a fantastic piece of Cinema History. I found it amazing how the Studio uses simple tricks with Props, Perspective Shots and painted Backdrops to make the Palace look opulent and Grand. The extremely well written and catchy Songs stood their ground even without great Vocals. The Casting was absolutely brilliant! In a Role that seemed to be written only for Yul Brynner who showed his incredible ability to go from a joyful smile, to the Kings menacing frown within moments was absolutely superb and the coupling with Deborah Kerr despite her seemingly trying to out-act Yul in most scenes worked well. The Siamese version of "Uncle Tom's Cabin" showed just how much thought went into this Movie etc, etc, etc
The Sound of Music (1965)
I couldn't fault a thing! A Masterpiece
I've grown up with every Female generation in my Family Singing these Songs, so it's surprising I've only just got round to watching this now. I had no idea this Movie was so Dark! Starting with the Joyful opening which slowly progresses to an unpredictable Sinister Storyline.
This is Top Cinema at it's best!! The Costumes, The Settings, The Actors, The catchy Song writing all get Top Marks from me. I even found myself so engrossed and feeling anxious with sudden urges to shout at the Screen, especially near the End.
I couldn't fault a thing! It's such a shame that modern Film makers seen to have lost the ability to write such Masterpieces anymore. A Brilliant Movie!!!
Turbo Kid (2015)
Paperboy vs. Madmax. Nostalgia Heaven!
There is more nostalgia in the opening sequence than you can shake a Rubix Cube at! Just when I thought Kung Fury was gonna be the only 80s inspired Movie this Year, Turbo Kid comes along and crosses Paperboy with Madmax. I absolutely loved this Movie!! The Characters and Story are great, The Styling and general feel of the Movie may look copied and stereotypical but what else would you expect? The Gore is totally unnecessary but awesome, The Bad Guys have the right balance of creepy and unhinged. I swear this was based on my imagination as a 12 Year Old!
If you were a Kid in the 80s then this is a must see...
On the Town (1949)
A cheaper version of Anchors Aweigh. Disappointing
Prior to this Movie I Really thought Gene Kelly and Frank Sinatra were an unbeatable pair but I really feel this Movie was lacking any originality or showed off any of the extreme Talent from it's Main Stars. I'm not sure if it was the fact it just felt like a cheaper version of Anchors Aweigh but I feel Frank didn't really get many memorable Songs and Gene didn't get his chance to Shine in the magical Dance numbers he usually delivers.
The Women in this Movie really stole the Spotlight with their variety of personalities and Charm. I found myself being drawn to them instead of Gene and Frank mainly due to the female Characters carrying the entire Film.
Blade Runner (1982)
Utterly Superb!
This is the first time I've seen this Movie and as there's seven different versions, I decided to watch "The Director's Cut" it was utterly Superb!! The detailing, atmosphere, Characters, Special FX and the entire World it's set in was incredible. Futuristic Movies from this era were by far my favourite. My only fault with this Film was the fact I didn't really connect with Harrison Fords Character which made me not give a damn about his Love interest or the Journey on his part. All the other Characters were Cast perfectly in my opinion so other than that it's Brilliant and a must see!! I've now heard the 2007 Final Cut is even better...
Fiddler on the Roof (1971)
One of the best Musicals ever made!
This Movie is so popular I even knew the Songs before I'd seen the Movie. It's seriously lives up to its expectations and much more... I feel Modern Movies lack the ability to create so much tension and drama without the use of dialogue or soundtracks. Much the same as The Sound of Music, I had no idea this Film had such a dark Storyline and it's rare to see a Movie breaking the Hollywood Mold for a "Happy Ending". Chaim Topol's acting of this Character had the perfect balance between being a Strong Mans Man and the humour of always doing as he pleases but at the same time backing down to his Wife. One of the best Musicals ever made. Absolutely Brilliant!!
Mr. Holmes (2015)
utterly underwhelming!
I was surprised to see another version of Holmes being released so soon after the success of Guy Ritchie's adaptation, so I had high expectations for this based on Ian McKellens ability to create such emotion behind a single grunt or groan but unfortunately I found this utterly underwhelming! Holmes is usually a very articulate Character with an amazing ability to out smart, surprise and twist a Story, yet this had neither! This portrayal was more like a Coffin dodger with amnesia. I have no idea why Laura Linney was cast for this Role as her annoying mixed Country/Irish accent was seriously off putting. The only person to carry this seriously predictable Film was the young Milo Parker. Watch out for him in the future...
Ant-Man (2015)
vaguely watchable!
All my predictions for this Film were pretty much spot on, with it being a Movie you shouldn't take too seriously, with Paul Rudd playing the same Role he always does and a script full on long "Science" explanations to why things happen BUT if you forget all the "Adult" complex Superhero Movies Marvel has just spent Years rebuilding it's reputation on, and try to put "Honey! I shrunk the Kids" and "It's a Bugs Life" as far out of your mind as possible by pretending you're 15 years old and back in 1985, This Movie is vaguely watchable! I still can't see how Ant-Man is gonna feature in a serious Avengers Movie as the whole concept seems a Parody of itself.. Still! It could've been worse, it wasn't a bigger shambles as Green Lantern and after all, Hawkeye was made an Avenger for just being good with an Arrow...
