Love Lies Bleeding (2024)
Stop in the name of love...before he/she breaks your face
The movie was ok. It's hard to care about any of the characters that much as they are all pretty terrible. Acting was good and I expected it would be. But I just didnt feel invested in a movie where I could care less what happens to any of them.
I think my biggest complaint is the DV. It's a prominent part of the movie. It seemed true reality that the sister feels love for her abusive partner no matter how many blows she receives. One of the saddest parts of DV imo. What I didnt like was an ending where I believe some might feel good/ok(?) that the two lovers end up together.. one being the family member so against the DV her sister endured. And yet we see multiple scenes of DV directed at this person by her bodybuilder lover. They imply steroids was behind the abuse but that's no more an excuse than alcohol, stress, or anything that someone uses to excuse their disgusting behavior. Not my favorite movie I've seen Stewart in by a large margin. And I really like her and think she's a great actress.
Silverlake Life: The View from Here (1993)
Bobbymeizer's review was beautiful.
So appreciate your review. I'm also a heterosexual married man but appreciate diversity and the value that all men and women have. Just really enjoyed how you raise your children and the freedom you show them that it's ok to be who they are.
Life can seem a bit depressing anymore with all the fighting and put downs people show to one another. It's nice to see a movie invoking the feelings I see in many of these reviews.
I do not think I've seen a better film dealing with a same sex couple in a loving relationship dying of aids. This film will leave you feeling a joyful sadness and you will be happy that you watched.
Hunter Hunter (2020)
Wow
I thought this movie was incredible. The ending reminded me of other titles that left me feeling sort of gross for watching what I did. But not this movie. It made sense. I've seen some complain how some decisions certain characters made didnt make sense. While I see their point I do think the filmmakers provided adequate story to make it believable. Maybe not how we would react but made it believable about how such a character would. At the end of this movie I didnt feel happy, I didnt feel sad, I didnt feel gross for watching. I just felt "wow". A truly memorable and amazing film imho. To each his own. I give this a 10.
Literally, Right Before Aaron (2017)
Justin Long does very well in these roles..
I'd actually give this a 7.5 out of 10.
Another somewhat sad romance was Comet. Long showed he has the ability to pull these "sad romantic still in love with the girl" roles off very well. This movie which I feel isnt quite as good as Comet still had a lot in it that I think many people can relate to. While the mid to later part of the movie could definitely have been better I think they just nailed the ending. The bathroom discussion followed by the cake scene.. well let's say at the end I was convinced that his ex realized (probably with regret) what she was losing.
The 15:17 to Paris (2018)
Horrendous acting..
Do not bother with this movie. I've enjoyed many of the other movies Eastwood has directed. A little surprised just how terrible the acting was. Hard to buy into any movie when the lines are delivered by stiffs.
Mindhunter (2017)
could've been better..
but I still enjoyed what they did come up with. If you aren't hooked by the first 3 episodes you likely will not like the show. I thought the beginning episodes were the shows strength. It bogged down just a bit in the middle and then seemed to be picking up a bit towards the end. What I didn't like is no central Season 1 story-line that could be sorta wrapped up while keeping the more general story-line (what they are working on). This left the finale feeling a tad weak and unlike other shows season finales where it wrapped up issues or left a major cliffhanger. Without this what distinguishes one Season from the next? It's like S2 could actually just be an extension of S1. Like S1 is 20 episodes stretched over 2 years. I get that in the long run all episodes are part of the whole.. but they are also usually central to a Season story-line.
I'm probably harping on this too much. As I did like the show. But just felt this left the last episode feeling weak and how the show could have been much better.
Something for Everyone (1970)
Loved this movie!
This movie was well acted and just a delight.. The scenery is lovely and who doesn't like a setting involving an old Austrian castle with a wealth starved nobility striving for former glory. That it is pulled of by a bisexual commoner.. well the plot is just perfect!
Angela Lansbury and Michael York hats of to you for a magnificent performance!
La La Land (2016)
Not sure which was better. (Moulin Rouge or La La Land) But I loved them both!
I have enjoyed every movie that Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling have appeared in together. But this was the best one so far. I had always been a Ryan Gosling fan. But it took me awhile to warm up to Stone. Though I think she is fantastic now! (I think I really became a fan after seeing her lip sync battle with Jimmy Fallon) She has a cute way about her, and her handling of emotional scenes is pretty great.
Very slight spoiler below..
I thought the ending of La La Land was very well done. Showing the sacrifices people make to reach their goals/dreams can be very painful choices. And also made me wonder what different choices could have been made to still be together while not selling out on ones goals.
Man Down (2015)
Emotionally compelling..
I wont say much more then Shia just nailed it! The emotion he showed throughout this movie was very believable. I don't see anyone playing the role better then he did. I'm sure a better film critic could expose some of the problems in this film. But to me, a passionate fan of movies.. well this was just terrific!
My wife who was watching something different (me with headphones on) had to ask me why I was crying. Well done.
ps. Kate Mara was also excellent. The scene with her shaving Shia's characters hair.. well I just thought their chemistry was great.
45 Years (2015)
Great movie.. (after intro contains spoiler)
Great movie. Rampling as usual is wonderful. What a gift she has been to all of us who love the cinema.
I have a question.. but by asking it will reveal some things.. So this is a SPOILER ALERT... Spoiler alert...
Do not look below if you haven't seen the movie...
A crucial scene (to my mind anyway) is when the couple are lying in bed and Kate begins to ask some questions of Geoff. She seems to be most concerned that Geoff may have actually been married to Katyia. He goes into detail to dispel such a notion and mentions that while Katyia wore a ring it was wooden and meant to allow their deception so they could stay as a couple in peoples homes.
Later when Kate is in the loft and looking at the Slides she becomes the most flustered (heavy fast breathing) when there is a picture of Katyia's that prominently displays her hands. As the slide is very old we the viewer cant ascertain any detail like that from the slide..
But I'm left wondering if that was nothing.. or did what Kate see something that confirmed what Geoff had said or perhaps made her doubt what he said.
Anyone have thoughts on that?
