The Witcher (2019)
10 Stars because of Henry Cavill
I never use this website. I only came here to voice my intense disappointment and disapproval that Henry Cavill has been replaced. Before I saw this show, I never could have imagined him in this role, and now that I've seen it, I can't imagine anyone else. I can't believe how expressive he is to make such a taciturn character so rich and lovable. This is an understatement, but...Well done, sir.
This has made me so sour I had no interest in Blood Origin even though I love Michelle Yeoh, love the genre and the storyline of Witcher. I'll watch Season 3 until Cavill's last minute, then I'll move on to the next thing.
I really enjoy the inclusivity and diversity of the characters - it actually makes the story feel more real to me. Even in the real world, ancient explorers/exploiters like the Portuguese, the Vikings, Dutch, and the British were surrounded by a diverse bunch of people from Africa to India, Natives of the "New World" and beyond, but in stories told by white folks who only care about white folks, the only characters of merit tend to be...white folks. I hope this trend of diversity continues.
I know Henry Cavill is going through some big life changes also leaving the Superman franchise, but his role in the Witcher has proven he's an actor who can completely reinvent himself at will. I sincerely look forward to his next adventure.
Glass Onion (2022)
A delight to watch
This was so much more fun and funny than I was expecting it to be. I loved the cameos, the easter eggs, the dynamic between Jannelle Monae and Daniel Craig. Agree with everyone who said more Hugh Grant in his role. I loved the inclusivity as well as the blistering commentary on real world events, namely a self-absorbed billionaire who doesn't care if he's going to burn the whole place down in the name of self-aggrandizement.
I also just love this role for Daniel Craig as a transition from the Bond franchise. Playing a southern gentleman was the last role I would have expected from him in the original Knives Out (which I also loved) but he's perfect for it. I can never get enough of Dave Bautista and how he also plays outlandish roles that you wouldn't necessarily expect for a person with his acting history.
Having the movie repeat scenes from different viewpoints as more information was layered in was actually a really profound experience that almost sparked some really deep thoughts, but then I got sucked back into the delight of watching this movie.
Some day, it's my dream that Ed Norton will play a benevolent charmer in some really sappy Hallmark romance to break up the monotony of him playing a devious, scheming megalomaniac. I believe in him, I really do.
Tapped (2009)
One sided and combative.
I live in a major city. My tap water sometimes has unacceptable levels of fecal coliforms so they add so much chlorine when i take a shower my throat burns. Research the epidemic of prescription meds in tap water, municipalities are not equipped to remove them. I agree there are problems but trying to demonize everyone won't truly solve problems. Wish you had done more balanced report. In one part they claim water is shipped out of state then when they criticize FDA they say most of the water stays in state. They don't discuss job creation and local economic concerns. Also if this is such a huge industry, there is a need being met. My tap doesn't exist 3 hours from home and I'm not carrying a day's water supply on my back everywhere I go. No alternatives were presented.
