SGT. Will Gardner (2019)
Heartfelt, important
A heartfelt look at what our returning veterans have to deal with. 30% of all proceeds benefit veterans organizations. Max did a great job. Worth checking out.
Metallica: Orgullo pasión y gloria. Tres noches en la ciudad de México. (2009)
Metallica At Heir Best
It is a fantastic mix of music with songs off of every album except St. Anger. Great mix of Death Magnetic and classic tallica tunes. The addition of Robert Trujillo in combination with Hetfield getting sober has made the band sound much better than they did throughout the 90's. These guys don't show their age on stage and kick maximum ass. Tearing into songs like Disposable Heros and Dyers Eve and pulling them off like it's 1986. My only real complaint is excessive fan footage. It seems like there are as many shots of audience members screaming as there are of the band. I realize the director wants to capture the live experience, but I'm watching this to see Metallica. It also suffers from the MTV generation rapid cutting. It's hard to find a shot that lasts more that a second. But if you can ignore that, it's a great Metallica experience. There's plenty for die hard old fans who only like KEA-MOP and for the new fans there's a good amount of Death Magnetic. Metallica rules.
Paranormal Activity (2007)
Much Better Than I Anticipated
I just watched this from Netflix and I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. It is a very very simple movie. It is basically an episode of Ghost Hunters or Ghost Adventures that actually has stuff happen. The characters are fairly likable. I did have issues with the boyfriends stupidity. Egging on the demon, bringing out a weegie board... The night scenes were very creepy and I had a strong sense of dread every time they went to sleep and set up the camera. There is nothing scary looking in this film, it's all noises and mysterious goings on. This kind of scary may not work for you, many may find it lame. But for me, letting myself go, the demonic footsteps creeped me out. If you're one to over analyze or can't get past the fact that'it's not real, that's just a crew member thudding in the hallway' then this isn't something you should see. As I said, very very simple. Bumps in the night. The ending is sudden, I wasn't expecting that to be the ending. Creepy. Fun, simple creeps to be had here.
Shutter Island (2010)
Great Acting but everything else is bland
All the actor's gave very strong performances and kept me interested, but this 2hr+ movie left me feeling very disatisfied. There's a big twist which I won't spoil, but I figured it out a few minutes before th reveal. The twist isn't very fun, and not very mind blowing. I was ready for the film to be over after the reveal, but then it went on for another 20-25 minutes. Flashback scenes were slow paced, not particularly interesting and really took me out of the movie. I kept feeling like I was watching The Departed, because of Leo's accent I'm sure. Leo is fantasitc and is reason enough to RENT this film. I regret paying to see this in the theater. Wait for Netflix.
Sister of Night (2009)
A Very Enjoyable Mystery with some Great Performances.
I was lucky enough to see an early screening of Sister of Night. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I love that the film is black and white except for during flashbacks, it really sets the mood. The filming locations feel very authentic and gritty.
For a long movie I never felt that there was a lull. The story is very engaging, the mystery kept me guessing, there's a nice twist that I didn't see coming and I genuinely cared for the characters. This movie feels like a throwback to "the good old days of film" while also feeling fresh and new. Both writers of the film play significant roles on screen an do a very good job. The climax of the film is very tense and very fulfilling.
Sister of Night has some great performances, great cinematography, suspense, subtle comedy and some good action. It is definitely worth your time.
The Shield (2002)
The Best Cable Network Original Show
The Shield is an incredible experience from the 1st episode to the most recent one. Unlike other shows, The Shield does not rely on action. If I watch 24, I'm just wishing Jack would start shooting someone. On the Shield, the supporting cast is strong enough so that I'm never bored. These actors love this show and it really comes across on screen. Scenes between Lem, Shane and Vic in seasons 4, 5, and 6 are some of the most powerful scenes I've ever seen in any movie or TV show. The camera work doesn't bother me, but I can see how some people might not like it. If you can get past it, The Shield is the best show on TV right now. It mixes intensity, drama, comedy and action perfectly.
