The Pink Panther (2006)
The Remake was Dismal
The very first Pink Panther (1963) was boring, but some of the other 'Pink Panther' movies e.g. A Shot in the Dark (1964), The Return of the Pink Panther (1975), The Pink Panther Strikes Again (1976), and The Revenge of the Pink Panther (1978) were very entertaining, despite usually lacking a story.
There are several aspects common to the above movies that the modern version lacks.
Clouseau: Peter Sellers was brilliant; he played Clouseau with class. Steve Martin was ridiculous; his over-the-top portrayal makes Clouseau out to be a complete idiot.
Cato: Is sadly missing, along with his 'pretend assassin' attacks on Clouseau.
Dreyfus: The marvelous interaction between Dreyfus and Clouseau has gone.
Steve Martin has done a good job in a few movies e.g. The Three Amigos, but was sadly miscast playing Clouseau. The producers would have been much better off using a decent British actor and reducing the ridiculous slapstick.
Finally, have Americans never heard of the term 'subtle'? Too much of the modern Pink Panther is 'in your face' comedy.
Doctor Down Under (1979)
Doctor Down Under
Robin Nedwell and Geoffrey Davies demonstrate the magic that exists between their respective 'Doctor' characters. Geoffrey portrays himself as the usual cheating, lying, conniving and manipulative womanising gambler. Robin plays the usual combination of responsible, caring doctor, and over-the-top party-boy.
They are well supported by Australian performers. Frank Wilson is Professor Norman Beaumont, a take-off of Professor Sir Geoffrey Loftus from the original 'Doctor' series, and John Derum is Dr Maurice Griffin, a take-off of Dr James Gascoigne.
The scripts are entertaining and enjoyable, and every bit as good as those for the original British episodes.
Overall: Good entertainment for 'Doctor' fans.
