Snow White and the Huntsman (2012)
OK film.
If you are excited o see the film, go see it. Only a very pessimistic person will say it was a bad film. The film is not bad. In fact everything about it is good. The problem is that it stops at good.
The trailer makes you believe it's a more epic Lord of the Ring style movie. It's not. From the trailer you can see there is a Witch, Snow White, and a Huntsman... and yes you classic evil vs good romance story is here, that's it. What you have come to expect from these Twilight like films is exactly what's in this movie. Which means general audience members will like it, but film buffs will not.
The reason the movie was not great is the story is too simple, straight forward and predictable. It's not really darker or more adult if you ask me, it actually is the animated movie in live action.
The second thing that held it back was the cast for Snow White. This girl cannot act to save her life. It was embarrassing how few lines she has because of her terrible delivery. If you want to imagine her acting exactly, picture Bella from Twilight in a dress, and that is exactly what u get in this film, cold stale acting from the main character. Everyone else was good though.
Ang-ma-reul bo-at-da (2010)
Amazing. no seriously I can explain.
I reserve a 9 rating for very exclusive films. This movie is one of them.
I will be short and sweet. If you are not familiar with foreign or just Korean films in general this movie will blow your socks off. If you are familiar with American movies here is what you need to know about "I Saw The devil"
The ending is moved to the middle, the hero is ambiguous and definitively not perfect, you won't expect whats next, many scenes will leave you scratching your head, it is very violent, very bloody, good amount of nudity, the characters are deep, the story is amazing, it will hold your interest from beginning to end, doesn't have many slow moment, camera and lighting are amazing. editing and pace are really good.
Over all save this movie for a Halloween time, its chilling and horrific, excellent movie.
Paul (2011)
Great funny film to see w/ friends. nothing more nothing less.
First off let me explain my rating system. I gave this film a 6 out of 10.Which in my system is pretty high. 7 is the highest I give comedies because for me to get an 8 or a 9 you need an exceptional story, acting, and the movie needs to be very original, something comedy films rarely do.10 I almost never give. So a 6 fits this film.
Why? This is most definitively a great comedy. Simon Pegg and Nick Frost always make a fantastic likable duo. 1they pretty much are the heart and soul of the film. Seth Rogen is funny as the alien "Paul". And the movie is packed with stars, you will recognize many of your favorite comedians in here and you will catch plenty of Easter eggs and pop culture references -this was a lot like a family guy episode. Now the reason why I gave it a 6 instead of a 7 9on my system) was because the story was nothing special or original, it was a standard story as you would expect. Pretty predictable and awkward a few times. Lastly the jokes where fine if you where watching this with friends. But in reality the jokes where average if not sub-par. It relies heavily on ironic references and random "funny" moments. Also it relies a lot on cursing. Saying the F bomb a couple of times is funny, but you will notice they use F-bomb jokes HEAVILY through out - which really diminishes the effect. This was not a labor of love and you can feel the commercialism in it. It was a commercial for profit film. If you want to watch it - give it a go with friends and snacks and you will enjoy it.
However, If you really want an amazing Movie with a good story, lovable character, hilarious jokes and a satisfying conclusion that will leave you with a great feeling watch Zombieland, Shaun of the Dead,or Hot Fuzz. Those movies I just mentioned have much better dialog, acting and jokes. Paul is great but not awesome.
The Last Airbender (2010)
Excellent story, very bad execution.
I am probably the most fairest person on IMDb. As a film-maker my self I know that it is extremely difficult to make a movie, let alone a good one. I also am first to claim that M. Night is a excellent director and that he has a very well paced style. With that said, The Last Airbender, was a complete disaster. The good things about are: The cinematography on some shots is very strange and abstract but very beautiful. M. Night employs some very smooth camera moves and the overall movie polish is clean and slick. Some Action scenes where cool and the CGI overall looks OK. Nothing too fancy but some bending of the elements does look cool, especially water and earth. The cuts are excellent and M. Nights editor really knows how to make the best of a bad movie.
Now for the bad part. The cuts have to be excellent because they cut from scene to scene extremely fast. Imagine the whole cartoon season played on fast forward, thats how fast it was made. Almost as if M. Night shot the whole cartoon scene by scene and did not want to leave anything out. The acting! The acting was just horrible. It is probably the cheesiest, most badly-acted movie I have seen in a long time. Sokka is not funny, he is a wanna be macho guy. Aang is not fun and bubbly, instead he is serious and unlikable. Katara is not that motherly character, Zuko is not that cool complex guy, he is just mad all the time. Uncle Iroh, like Sokka was comedic relief and also a likable Yoda type of character; Well not in this movie; he is a skinny old man who seems cold and distant. The martial art stuff was really bad, in fact, most of the stuff is just close up of fire nation soldiers looking scared. IDK why many things where in slow motion but it got annoying. It had a lot of cheesy camera zooms which where completely unnecessary.
In conclusion this movie is not bad because I disagree on some things or I didn't like something and Im a troll.. No, this movie is bad because it is fundamentally not well made. M Night should know better than that. How dare he make a movie this structurally unsound? The most basic of things like character development, pace, timing, rhythm, attention to detail... nothing! Its not even like of well I didn't like this part, not there was no part to dislike, in fact I think there is a lot of missing scenes, its almost as if we watched a 6 hour movie chopped down to 2 hours and the missing scenes are blatantly obvious. It really is a bad movie in every sense of the word.
Should you watch it? If you like the Last Airbender than go ahead, if you are a hardcore fan then no, because it will ruin Avatar for you. Some movies are so bad you just have to see them to understand, and there for I recommend this as a rental, but you will feel disappointed if you bought theater tickets, and even worse if you paid extra for 3D. Because the 3D was really bad on this also. Trust me, as soon as the first 10 seconds rolled by and I herd the first words come out of Katara's mouth, I though to to self, oh lord no... oh God no, this is going to be a horrid movie, I could not believe how bad the acting was on it from the beginning.
Ssa-i-bo-geu-ji-man-gwen-chan-a (2006)
Steady paced romantic story about HUMANS.
First of all let me get this out of the way. I started watching this on the Sundance channel simply because I was so captivated by the incredibly beautiful cinematography. Oh my sweet Jesus is this movie beautiful. Every single frame from this movie looks like a photograph. It looks very polished and blockbuster like, but something is different. I can't put my hand on it, but it doesn't look fake and commercial like American blockbusters. It shot in a very cinematic way, but it just seems more real.. IDK you have to see it, the way I would describe it would be like a Japanese anime style of camera framing , mixed with A clockwork orange type of story telling. It really is amazing.
The story it's self is about two people in a loony house. One thinks she is a cyborg and the other thinks he can steal peoples abilities. Simple right? But so far from it. There are things even I didn't get. Its indeed very very refreshing, its a new age way of storytelling and I have not seen another movie like it. It is steadily paced, So if you think movies that take their time telling a story are boring then this won't be for you. Hell I thought It was boring, but it was just so well made that I quickly became sucked into the movie once it ended I was truly amazed with what I had seen. Im positive that if you watch this movie you will like it.
Overall I gave It a 9 for how well it was made, but took a point away because It was paced a bit slowly for my taste and I deducted another point because while I did like It It wasn't as emotionally charged as other films.. Usually a movie rated a 8 or 9 for me has to have powerful emotions, which this movie is not one of them. however the movies it's self in its own right is a 10
I Am Legend (2007)
9 out of 10 movie, why?
OK to give you a very quick summary of the movie without giving away to much i will say this, It's a Post-apocalyptic movie, under the horror/action group, there is more action than horror, Starring Will Smithas DR. Neivell. He is an ex-military personal who is Luckilly also a scientist living in New York city. a lot happens (dont want to spoil it) then a couple years later it seems that he is the only "human" alive. along with his only companion a dog named Sue, he must race and find find a cure and survive, its post-apocalyptic war against the "dark-seekers". If you read the book, you ca leave it at home, because this movie takes a new twist on the story and i strongly believe is better than the other three adaptations, including the so very wrong blatant attempt to cash in using the I am Legend trend movie called "I am Omega" which sucked a lot LOL. Very good movie, powerful, emotional, realistic, action-packed, and very suspenseful. Execellent MOVIE! IMHO: it will scare you (as in make you jump), not as in the bloody zombie scary way, no, but as in it will startled you and surprise you way, lots of people screamed in my theater HAHAHAHAHA. people often like to criticize movies and nit-pick at then and if you do you make any movie look bad, people argue stupid things like, how can he drive the car if gasoline is only stable for 6 months and goes bad after that, Its completely stupid to argue that since its just a movie. But it still doesn't take away of how amazing its story line is, people will always say the book is batter than the adaptation, but i say the movies are just as good, the only reason people say the book is better is because the movie is usually not interpreted how they personally would interpreted thats all, over all its a very powerful movie, some people cried. And its a very realistic movie, its not some mutant zombie flick, the virus is a mutated variant of the measles that scientists made to fight cancer, talk about ironic. So its a " this could happen" kind of feeling through out the movie, which makes it so much more interesting. Overall i am 90% sure that you will absolutely LOVE this film or 10% you will like it, a lot. There is really not much wrong with it and definitely have you thinking about your mortality and morals. Will smith puts on an amazing show, his acting is superb! if you like i robot, MIB, or others, this movie is about 50 times better. other characters are not developed as much, but there is no need to, because the the main story is focused on the DR.
