Rome (2005)
Mosque in Egypt BC, really??
I know my review is like 10 years after the show, but I've just bought the DVD, and I kinda wish I didn't!
I won't talk about the unnecessary and pointless nudity, I got used to it with the most recent shows now. I've noticed that it was a low budget production from the start, you can see it from the clothes, the jewelry and of course the setting itself, the buildings were far bigger and more glamorous. On the other hand, there were a lot of actors that I liked, the directing was good and the story wasn't bad, so I kept watching it.
It's not 100% historically accurate, but so are all the historical based shows nowadays, I watched it then as an ordinary TV show "inspired" by true events. However, we must respect a minimum of accuracy. So when I've reached episodes 7 and 8 of the first season that were in Egypt, I started laughing out loud for the following reasons:
- There was a mosque in the background (you can see it when Mumbay arrived Egypt in episode 7). So Egyptians believed in a religion that appeared 500 years later ??!!
- I've actually understood the language spoken by the Egyptians in the episodes (I'm Egyptian btw), it was modern Egyptian, which is mainly Arabic!!! The Arabs didn't invade Egypt until late 400 or early 500 AD, and it took us centuries to use Arabic in our language!! there are a lot of books on ancient Egyptian language used at that time, why not applying it like any other decent show or movie did??? Better yet, just make them speak English like the rest!
- of course the costumes are not right (Arabic style, really??), the desert was only used for cemeteries and not even to imprison a princess like Cleopatra. We were a rural society, and we still are. We hate the desert, and we still do. Egypt was a great and civilized nation at the time, why is it looking like it's comprised of a couple of nomad tribes? American (or English) stereotypes much, even in historical shows??
- Last, but not least, with all my due respect to the actress, she's ugly to be Cleopatra. And Cleopatra wasn't so juvenile like that, she was known to be mature comparing to her age.
I'll continue watching the show (I wrote this review in the middle of ep. 8, couldn't resist!!) as I bought the DVD
MacGyver (2016)
For the negative reviewers: Rewatch the old show!
MacGyver was my favorite and first TV show when I was a kid, I preferred to watch it over cartoons. When they decided to remake it, I got so excited. I watched the first episode, and I noticed the writing could have been better, but it was OK, and I can see it's improving each episode. The narration did sound a bit much, it should be taken down a notch. What I really hate is the description of items shown on screen, that should be removed because it sounds very artificial. Beside that, the show is not bad, I love the actors and the plots. Now I wanna respond to negative reviews especially based on the old MacGyver show. When I read them, I decided to re-watch the old series, the last time I was ten years old. Surprisingly I only watched five series until I couldn't continue, it was boring and naive. I'm not saying it was a bad show, on the contrary it was my favorite and the best show of its time. But the rhythm and the story plots doesn't fit for this millennium. The new MacGyver show producers couldn't make a copy paste of the old one or it would have failed. Bottom line, the new show does have the same spirit as the old one but with the new pace of this time. Sure lots need to be improved but that doesn't mean it's a bad show.
Van Helsing (2016)
The most awful TV show I've ever watched!!!
To sum up, it's a very bad low production zombie post apocalyptic TV show: - The vampires are behaving like zombies. The funny thing is that Vanessa Helsing (the star!!) is the one with healing powers not the so- called vampires (just LOL) - This Vanessa is a distant relative of Van Helsing, the story has nothing to do with the original story. I think they chose this title just to draw viewers (to their doom!!) - Very irritating, very boring, very cliché, bad bad writing, poor set and costume, poor sound effects. - I would also say bad acting, but I hate to offend the actors, it's the director's fault, their only mistake is that they agreed to appear on this show.
Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders (2016)
Offensive and inaccurate
I was so looking forward to Criminal minds beyond borders because I'm a huge fan of the original series as well as Gary Sinise when he was in CSI NY. I also love the IT guy from back when he was in everybody hates Chris.
I watched the first two episodes that were in Thailand and India, and I noticed that classic stereotype views on foreign countries. Even though I've never been to India or Thailand, but I doubt that anyone would put a decaying body in an office! The story line in both episode was not that bad, but they lacked the depth of meticulous analysis found in the original Criminal Minds series. It seemed that they reached the psychological profile by luck after making a lot of mistakes first. I've said to myself though to give the series a second chance.
However, when I watched the episode in Egypt (which is my country btw), I've decided not to watch the show again. As an Egyptian, I was so offended by this episode because it was just full of inaccurate information. The majority of the conversation was about Egypt's conditions and not the case itself. The Egyptian military doesn't wonder around investigating crimes like that, it's mainly the police. The actual regime came after a popular revolution not a military coup. We are not that oppressed and poor in Egypt, we have problems like any country including the US nothing more. Not all Egyptians talk with an funny accent. Not all women are veiled. I don't know where they got this car at the crime scene, I've been living in Egypt and I've never seen one like this before. There is no desert in Cairo, only in Giza (another city), and there is no camel shop in the middle of nowhere. And last but not least, the gays are not oppressed, I used to work in a government agency with three gay colleagues with no discrimination against them.
So I've reached the conclusion that the show is not about solving crimes but about preventing Americans from traveling.
