Star Trek: The Next Generation: The Outrageous Okona (1988)
Comedy episode
This is a humorous episode of Star Trek NextGen. Although it has been bashed heavily, it is really a lighthearted story. It does get sappy at certain moments, but it's good for a few laughs. Okona is a good character for a single episode, as rakish rogues go.
This episode contains one of the rare moments in which we get to see Guinan in a place other than Ten-Forward.
All in all, it is a good step away from the usual Trek story lines and the creators had the good form to not make another one exactly like it. It stands as a fairly unique episode, quite funny, but if the creators had modeled another story after it, that would have been walking into a big bear trap.
Star Trek: New Voyages (2004)
A must-see!
Star Trek: New Voyages is a real sweet-treat for a Trekker, akin to opening up an old chest, expecting to see nothing of any interest, but finding a hidden treasure in the last place you'd expect!
A true Trekker who can accept the different actors can view New Voyages as a peek into what might have been, but wasn't possible, those many years ago when Classic Trek ended. Yet it avoids predictability - there are many surprises. For Trekkers with a taste for special effects, New Voyages has a number of sequences that are really nice to see, even though most of the FX - especially regarding any that contain the Enterprise - keep the spirit of the original series' FX but are updated to more modern standards.
At first, the actors are a little shaky in their roles, but they firm up very rapidly and make New Voyages a fun romp back into what Trek originally was, a fitting continuation of the five-year mission with Captain Kirk and his team.
