Survive the Raft (2023)
Polarising
To date, every single reviewer rated this series 1, 2, 9, or 10. You will likely think its amazing or absolute vomit material, depending on whether you think people must be judged on their hierarchy of victim-hood or privilege.
The producer has collected a bunch of extreme stereotypes, from apparent white redneck good ol' boy raised by a black family, an anorexic vegan who cries when someone catches a fish, a loud black woman who dissects every statement to see if she can be offended, the obligatory Muslim woman who thinks everyone is prejudiced against her, the obligatory trans male weightlifter, the beautiful tall athletic blonde, get the message?
The remaining normal people (once the black rabbi , honestly] is med-evacuated off) don't stand a chance because everything they say or do is judged by the others. Currently no-one trusts one of the contestants, but are afraid to vote them off because they are from a minority, and everyone else already voted off was also from a minority. For goodness sake, its hard not to vote off a minority when they are in the majority.
That was when i gave up in disgust.
America the Beautiful (2022)
Suited For Children
Two minutes on squirrels in a forest, then off to an alligator in the Louisiana swamp, then a few minutes later a prairie dog sits in the sun, survives a tornado, now its snowing. All narrated in childlike simplicity by some American celebrity.
American version of Attenborough for children with short attention spans.
The Northman (2022)
Absolute Trash
I so much wanted to enjoy this, but it was awful. From the phony supposed viking accents, to the savage dances reminiscent of Hollywood in the 30's, to the script where the most evocative sentence was "Aaarghh", this was the worst film I've seen since Gigli. Even the fight scenes are all done in the dark, saving money on decent choreography.
I can't understand how it rates so highly.
I've just read through lots of reviews, wanting to find out why it has a rating >3. Turns out people either hated it, or thought it was one of the best films ever made. Absolutely no-one was ambivalent. And over on RT, sure enough, the critics rate it much higher than the audience.
Eden: Untamed Planet (2021)
Saccharine
Helena Bonham Carter's sickly sweet metronome-like narration makes this series unbearable to listen to.
T-34 (2018)
English language version
Terrible dubbing with American slang.. Otherwise good fun
The Valhalla Murders (2019)
Love Scandi crime shows
Dark but definitely not dreary. Realistic acting, awesome camera work and music. The last scene sets it up for a second series. I hope we get it
The Trials of Gabriel Fernandez (2020)
Chillling Documentary
This documentary is all the more stunning because its made without embellishment or sensationalism. It lets the facts speak for themselves, and is all the more horrific because of that. The banality of Gabriel's torturers, and those bureaucrats who failed to protect him remind me of concentration camp documentaries. Its been a long time since I've been so affected by a ddocumentary
Star Trek: Picard (2020)
Boring
Wasted 46 minutes of my life that I'll never get back.
V-Wars (2019)
Disappointment
Overacting, weak plot, unlikeable leads, loud music telegraphing supposedly scary scenes. i gave up before I even saw the first vampire
Zomboat! (2019)
Pommie Zombies
Hilarious series just like Shaun of the Dead. Even has Walking Dead jokes.
Echo in the Canyon (2018)
"Starring Jakob Dylan, featuring Ringo Starr, Dave Cosby, ...."
Review title says a lot - would have been so much better without the mediochre talent of Jakob Dylan, who I'd never heard of, and is totally overshadowed by the greats of the sixties
The Kominsky Method (2018)
Typical Hollywood liberal pap
Lost me at the first literal nod to a non-binary character
