Shazam! (2019)
One of the most fun Comic Book films ever!
The DC universe has gotten on track ever since Wonder Woman. I can safely say that they are continuing that trend with Shazam. This film is extremely fun!
The story follows the last wizard of the council that keep the Seven Deadly Sins contained. For countless years he has searched for a champion to inherit his powers. The wizard eventually finds high school kid Billy Batson, who got lost from his mom when he was young. He is taken in by a foster home with other lost kids of varying age. Billy Batson meets with the wizard and is given the wizard's powers. With the help of his friend Freddy Freeman, Billy Batson discovers his true potential of being a superhero. When the villain Dr. Thaddeus Sivana is given powers of dark magic by the Seven Deadly Sins and arrives in their home city, Billy Batson must defeat Sivana and show all his friends that everyone has a superhero hiding inside themselves.
First, the comedy in this film works really well. The film doesn't take itself too seriously, and the comedy in the film works well. It is well written, executed well, and always plays a role.
Second, the villain Sivana is a well-defined and threatening villain, better than some of the other villains in the DC universe. He has believable motivations and provides a real challenge for Billy to overcome. The Seven Deadly Sins that follow him around are also well designed and quite threatening at times. I did not expect the villains of the film to be this good.
Finally, the film got serious when it needed to. Some other films cannot balance the comedy and drama well, but Shazam does it very well. All the dramatic moments and heartfelt moments are believable and realistic. You feel the weight behind what the characters are doing. Most superhero films lean more towards the comedic side, but Shazam balances its tone quite well.
In conclusion, Shazam is undeniably fun. It has great characters, a good and compelling story, a solid villain, and loads of laughs. This film, combined with 2018's Aquaman, gives me great confidence it what Warner Bros. is doing with the DC universe going forward. Shazam is just FUN, why can't more movies just be fun?
9/10
Avengers: Infinity War (2018)
An absolutely amazing movie that puts ever other MCU movie to shame!
Ever since Iron Man premiered in 2008, the MCU has been building up to this point, through thick and thin, through highs and lows, Infinity War was the climax of an encapsulating film franchise. Just saw the film, and I was absolutely blown away.
This film is engaging, hilarious, suspenseful, emotional, and absolutely entertaining from beginning to end. It'll shock you, make you laugh, make you gasp, and make you tear up. Never in any movie has this big of a cast been so well utilized, with great chemistry and a great amount of character-driven humor.
By far the best character in the movie was Thanos. With every tease and cameo in other MCU films, Thanos was built up as the greatest villain the heroes would ever face. He is menacing, commands a intimidating presence, and has an arc that makes him a complete and believable character among the others. Josh Brolin provided us with absolutely the greatest villain of the MCU.
The stakes are high with the infinity stones as Thanos attempts to collect them all. With stakes as high as these, characters are sure to die! Not in the typical comic book film way, but as emotional and heart-breaking moments (No spoilers on who actually dies!)
The Russo Brothers outdid themselves, continuing the MCU's unparalleled success of making engaging and entertaining flicks. Infinity War is by far the best of the MCU, proving once and for all, that comic book movies are here to stay for a very long time. Avengers Infinity War is incredible, absolutely at 10/10 film! (No spoilers in my review! Your welcome!)
Kong: Skull Island (2017)
An Action-Packed Thrill Ride! The best Kong film since the original!
Ever since 1933, King Kong has thrilled and terrified audiences for over 80 years. The original film still stands as one of the most influential films of all time, and will always stand as the greatest of all the Kong films. This film has been one of my most anticipated films of the year. With an all-star cast and awesome trailer, this was promising to be an action-packed thrill ride. For me it did not disappoint. This is the best Kong film since the 1933 original!
WARNING! I will be explaining the plot in detail! So Spoiler Alert! Go and see this movie before you read my review. Okay, let's get started!
The plot of the film goes like this. The film begins with an American pilot, Hank Marlow, and a Japanese pilot during WWII crash- landing on an island. After a brief conflict and cameo by Kong, the film jumps to 1973. Two men: Bill Randa (John Goodman) and Houston Brooks (Corey Hawkins) are trying to get government support for an expedition to an uncharted island in the South Pacific which was just revealed by satellite images. They are able to get their support, an organize an elite team for their mission. They recruit a Vietnam War soldier Preston Packard (Samuel L. Jackson) and his men, expert tracker James Conrad (Tom Hiddleston), and anti-war photographer Mason Weaver (Brie Larson). Their mission begins as they fly through massive storm clouds to reach the island. They begin to drop bombs, which Brooks explains as they are mapping the surface of the island. In reality, they are trying to awaken the monsters on the island. Eventually, the team comes across Kong, and he is furious. Kong begins to swipe down all the helicopters in an effort to defend his turf. Several soldiers are lost in the attack.
Packard threatens Randa, asking him why they are really here. Randa reveals that they were really trying to prove that monsters exist, as Randa is part of a government organization known as Monarch. The team is separated and must meet up at the pick up site. Packard is trying desperately to find a lost soldier, Chapman. Meanwhile, Conrad, Weaver, and a few others find Hank Marlow (John C. Reilly), who explains to them how he got there, and the mysterious beings known by him as Skull Crawlers. Packard continues endlessly to find Chapman, who unknown to him, has been devoured by a small Skull Crawler. After learning of Packard's true intentions of wanting to kill Kong, Conrad, Weaver and Marlow stand up to him, trying to defend Kong. However, Packard has accidentally awoken the big Skull Crawler, who chases the group as they try to escape the island. Kong has an enormous fight with the Skull Crawler, and the remaining survivors escape from the island.
The cast was a surprise for me in this movie. I really did like all the characters in this film. It took time to develop each character, and set up the cast as not just expendable. Some of the characters in the film die, but not all of them (No Spoilers Here!).
The film is no doubt, an action movie. From the beginning to the end, you are glued to your seat, watching an action-packed film with great CGI. Kong himself looks amazing, and a lot of the shots in the film are jaw-dropping. The Skull Crawlers are very menacing, and serve as the true villains of the film. The fight between Kong and the big Skull Crawler is extremely entertaining, and in my opinion, beats the V- Rex fight from Peter Jackson's Kong film. There are also a few other creatures, such as Buffaloes and a massive Spider, that are really there to entice the dangers of Skull Island. The island itself is very grand and very convincing. A lot of the sets, such as the boneyard are very detailed and realistic.
In conclusion, Kong Skull Island did not disappoint me. With a well- developed cast, interesting story, and fantastic action, this film has well deserved all the hype it has received. While nothing can top the original King Kong, this film has easily established itself as the king of all the other Kong films. It is massively entertaining and keeps going from beginning to end. Kong Skull Island is first in what should be a great year of blockbuster films. Kong Skull Island gets a 9/10 from me! Go and see it if you have not! You won't be disappointed!!!
Back to the Future (1985)
A "Timeless" Classic! One of the best movies ever made!
"Are you telling me that you built a time machine... out of a DeLorean?" Yes Marty McFly, in fact, that is your famous quote from one of the best movies, Back to the Future. Ever since I saw this movie, it has always been one of my favorites. Everything about this movie is great, from the cast, to the story, to the many marvelous one- liners. With all that being said, let us travel back to 1985 and Marty McFly's misadventures in Back to the Future!
Marty McFly is a 1985 teenager who is called on by his friend, Dr. Emmett Brown to come to the mall at 1:30 am to see his latest invention. Apparently, using plutonium that he stole, Doc was able to harness the power of the material to power a DeLorean car. The catch, the DeLorean is a time machine. However, Doc is shot down by the terrorists whom he stole the plutonium from. Marty gets in the DeLorean and attempts to escape. However, he accidentally gets up to 88 mph, and is transported back to 1955. Marty thinks he is in a dream, until he comes across the future mayor as a sweeper in a diner. Marty then finds his dad, and interferes with his meeting with his mom. Suddenly, Marty finds his mom, who seems to have the hots for him. Marty is able to find Doc and gets Doc to believe that he is from the future. Doc tells Marty that his interference with his parents meeting might cause him to never exist. Marty plans to get his parents together while allowing Doc to get him back to 1985. They eventually come up with a plan: using the exact time that a bolt of lightning will strike the clock tower, Doc will set up a wire that will transport the lightning's power into the DeLorean as it reaches 88 mph, sending Marty back to the future. At the Enchantment Under the Sea dance, Marty is able to get his parents together, and his plan to warn Doc that he will be killed that night in 1985 fails as Doc tears up the letter saying it will be catastrophic in the space-time continuum. Their plan is a success, and Marty is transported back to 1985. To his surprise, Doc taped Marty's note back together and wore a bullet-proof vest to protect himself. When Marty asks for an explanation, Doc says "I figured, what the hell."
What makes this movie great? Let's start with the cast. Without a doubt, Marty McFly and Doc Brown are two of the best movie leads ever! They have great chemistry together, and both pull off some very memorable one-liners. My personal favorite is Doc's line: "Great Scott!" The supporting cast is also great. Marty's dad and mom are very quirky and very funny. Some of the scenes, like when Marty disguises himself as Darth Vader from Planet Vulcan, are some of my favorites ever in any movie.
The story of the film is also very inventive. This was the definitive time travel movie, and still is to this day. Loaded with some still impressive special effects, the story is very real and an absolute gem to watch.
In my opinion, Back to the Future is an instant classic film. With great characters, an extremely inventive story, and eye-popping effects, Back to the Future has truly supplanted itself among some of the best movies of all time. While it is only #12 on my personal favorite movies list, there is no doubt that this is a movie that anyone can pick up and watch. Back to the Future gets a 9/10!!! See this movie if you have not!!!
Transformers: Age of Extinction (2014)
Bring New Life to the Franchise? EPIC FAIL!!!
Ever since the perfectly fun first movie, the Transformers franchise has gone downhill extremely fast. This film was Michael Bay's attempt to resurrect the series. While I didn't see this film in the theater, I still had a small amount of hope for the movie. Watched it on TV and, holy mackerel, this movie was HORRIBLE!!!
In my opinion, after this ATROCITY, the series is all but dead. Let's dive into this masterpiece of failure.
The story of the film is that the Transformers are now being hunted down. Apparently, a new Bounty Hunter has taken control of the humans trust, and the Autobots are in dire need of help. Ironically, Optimus Prime turns to mechanic Cade Yeager, played by Mark Wahlberg, his daughter Tessa, played by Nicola Peltz, and her boyfriend. The story of the film is okay, but the writing and dialogue is about average. The characters are either hit or miss. The only characters I like are Cade Yeager and a new Transformer played by John Goodman. Most of the new characters are awful. As is the fact that only Bumblebee and Optimus are the only returning classic Transformers. The new ones are very unforgettable.
One of the biggest negatives I had with the movie comes down to anticipation. Specifically, my anticipation to see the Dinobots in action. This was DESTROYED! The Dinobots are only in the last 30 minutes of this almost 3 HOUR MOVIE! That's right, the movie is almost 3 HOURS LONG! All the movie is is explosions, CGI, and Michael Bay stereotypes jammed down our throat! I didn't like it at all.
In conclusion, Transformers Age of Extinction is an absolute waste of time! The characters are unforgettable, the story is average, and the special effects are unbearable, as the film is trying to rely on explosions and CGI. If you're going to watch a Transformers movie, only watch the first movie. That is a legitimately great movie. This film, while not the worst (that is Revenge of the Fallen), is still VERY VERY BAD!!! Transformers Age of Extinction gets a 4/10! Nothing will convince me that Transformers The Last Knight will be good!
The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997)
A Wrongfully Hated Movie!
In 1993, Steven Spielberg's movie Jurassic Park premiered to overwhelming success. The film received 3 academy awards, and is now considered one of Spielberg's best films. With the success of Jurassic Park, there was obviously hype for Spielberg to make another movie. With that in mind, then came The Lost World.
While the original Jurassic Park film opened to great criticism and box office records, the second film in the series was universally bashed by everyone. Much like Spielberg's other sequel, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, no one seemed to like it. Even to this day, I never understood why this film was hated. So let's dive into The Lost World Jurassic Park.
The story of the film goes like this. After a rich family comes across the island Isla Sorna, their daughter is injured after encountering a group of Compys. The new CEO of Ingen, Peter Ludlow, attempts to use this incident as help for his mission to bring these dinosaurs back to San Diego. However, John Hammond is trying to preserve the island from all intruders by rallying the support of public opinion. In order to do this, he is planning to organize a team to get a complete photo record of the dinosaurs. He already recruited Eddie Carr, the technician, Nick Van Owen, the photographer, and Sarah Harding, the scientist. However when he learns that Sarah is part of the team, Ian Malcolm joins the group only to bring back Sarah, who is already on the island. The team arrives on the island, finds Sarah, and find Ian's daughter Kelly stowed away on their trailer. The Ingen team arrives soon after and attempts to capture the dinosaurs. However, when Ian's group tries to help an injured baby T-Rex, the parents destroy their trailer and kill Eddie. The two groups meet up, and working together, head towards a communications center on the island. However, a pack of Velociraptors ambush the group and kill almost everyone, while the two T-Rexes continue to follow them. Once they escape from the island, a T-Rex escapes custody and runs rampant through San Diego. After the T-Rex is returned to the ship, it is sent back to the island. Overall, I like the story of the film. It has plenty of likable characters and the idea of preserving the island was good.
Most of the characters in the film are great. Ian Malcolm has a much bigger role and his dynamics with all the other characters are good. He has favorite personal line in the film: "Oh yeah ohhhh ahhhh, that's how it all starts. And then later there's running, and uh screaming." Both Sarah and Nick get some pretty good lines as well. The Ingen guys are mostly good, especially Roland Tembo. He also has one of the best lines in the film: "I've spent enough time in the company of death."
The special effects in this movie are just as good as the first film. There is a perfect mix of practical animotronics and CGI, and the T-Rexes get a pretty good amount of screen time. The Raptors going through the long grass picking guys off is great, as is the trailer hanging off of the cliff. In fact, the T-Rex trailer scene in the film might be one of the best scenes in the entire franchise.
However, there are two negatives that I have with this movie that keep it from getting a 10. First off, the scene were Kelly uses her gymnastics to kick the Raptor out the window is pretty stupid. The following line from Ian almost made it work: "The school cut you from the team?" Finally, the T-Rex San Diego scene is also pretty stupid. While the CGI in this scene is mind-blowing, the idea of the scene is very out of place compared to the rest of the film. Not to mention, it is very much ripping off King Kong.
Despite these few negatives, The Lost World Jurassic Park is a very underrated sequel that is very wrongfully hated. The characters are good, the story is different, and the special effects are fantastic. While not nearly as good as the original Jurassic Park, The Lost World is a very good sequel that, in my opinion, beats out Jurassic World. The Lost World Jurassic Park gets a 9/10!!!
Hacksaw Ridge (2016)
One of the Greatest War Movies of all time!
Cinema has always been defined by the war films. Whether it'd be World War I, World War II, Vietnam, or even more modern battles, the war film has always ruled the academy awards. Several war films, such as: Patton, Platoon, Apocalypse Now, and the Hurt Locker have all won best picture. Hacksaw Ridge is promising to continue that trend with an amazing movie that can absolutely win the best picture award.
Some of the greatest war films are: Saving Private Ryan, Apocalypse Now, Platoon, The Hurt Locker, All Quiet on the Western Front, and Fury. Hacksaw Ridge has easily supplanted itself into that list. Mel Gibson gives us an amazing experience that is almost on par with his previous work, Braveheart.
The story of Hacksaw Ridge is the true story of Desmond T. Doss. Like most young men of the early 1940s, he wants to volunteer to serve his country in the now escalating World War II. However, due to his religious beliefs, Doss cannot touch a gun. Because of this, he is immediately deemed a coward, and is treated with great prejudice. However, thanks to the efforts of his father, Doss is allowed to go into battle without a single weapon to protect himself. Doss is sent to Okinawa, and he is forced to save as many as he can without a weapon. The story of Hacksaw Ridge is basically divided into two halves, with the first half being about his life, dealing with his adversity while also simultaneously finding the love of his life. The second half of the film is Doss on the front lines of the battle, saving lives while his comrades try to achieve victory. The story is very well done and does not seem to be slow.
The performances in this film are some of the best in any war film. Andrew Garfield gives the performance of his life as Desmond T. Doss, and makes us truly want to cheer for him. Vince Vaughn and Sam Worthington also give fantastic performances, and both give the audience some very memorable quotes. All the supporting characters are great, giving this film, in my opinion, a perfect cast.
One of the most memorizing aspects of this film is the brutal war scenes that take up the entire second half of the film. This film does not advertise war as great, it truly makes us believe that war is unbearable. The war scenes are brutal, violent, and amazingly shot. These are the most disturbing war scenes since the opening of Saving Private Ryan. Mel Gibson did a very commendable job at making these scenes both realistic and violent.
To sum up this review, Hacksaw Ridge, in my opinion, is the best movie of 2016. With a perfect cast, great story and fantastic cinematography, Hacksaw Ridge has supplanted itself as one of the greatest war movies of all time. In my opinion, on par with Saving Private Ryan and Platoon (which are my two favorite war movies). Hacksaw Ridge, absolutely gets a 10/10!!!
The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water (2015)
A Solid Sequel
The Spongebob Squarepants Movie from 2004, in my opinion, is one of the best animated movies ever made. However, despite the films huge success, it took 10 years for the first trailer for the second movie. I found the trailer, and I couldn't wait! After 11 long years, Spongebob was finally coming back to the big screen! I went with all my friends, and thought it was solid.
The Spongebob Movie: Sponge out of Water is a sequel that would bring the colorful world of Spongebob Squarepants to our world. The film was highly advertised as a animated/CGI hybrid film. This however, proved to be the biggest let down for the film. Whilst the trailers and posters advertised this as a Spongebob adventure on the surface, the film actually switches to the CGI route with 30 minutes left in the 90 minute movie. It is disappointing how only a third of the movie takes place on the surface, however, it is also nice to still see hand- drawn animated movies still being made.
Now lets talk about the film. First, the characters. The characters from classic Spongebob are back. After 4 not-so-great seasons of the TV show, the characters that we know from the first movie are back. Most the comedy jokes hit, and some of the characters like Squidward and Sandy, were given much bigger roles in this movie. The new characters, Burger Beard and his seagull crew were hilarious additions. All the characters are great.
Next up, the movie's plot. The plot of Sponge out of Water is that Burger Beard the pirate has stolen a magical book that allows him to steal the secret formula to the Krabby Patty. Bikini Bottom falls into an apocalyptic state, and Spongebob is forced to team up with Plankton. They build a time machine and try to steal back the formula before it disappeared. However, that plan fails. Then Spongebob, Patrick, Squidward, Sandy and Mr. Krabs, with help from Bubbles the dolphin, travel to the surface to get back the formula from Burger Beard. They harness the power of the magical book to become superheroes, and steal back the formula from Burger Beard. In all, the plot of this film is very weird, but very creative. As stated earlier, the final 30 minutes of the movie take place on the surface.
In conclusion, The Spongebob Movie: Sponge out of Water is a solid sequel that is sure to continue the show's legacy. The characters are great, the comedy is good, and plot is creative and the animation is top-notch. When the CGI surface world scene begins, it is non-stop fun from beginning to end. If you're a fan pf the TV show, and/or the first movie, I recommend watching this movie as well. It is not perfect, but it is a lot of fun. The Spongebob Movie: Sponge out of Water, in my opinion, gets a 7/10!
The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie (2004)
One of the best animated movies ever made!
When I was a kid, and discovered Spongebob, I immediately fell in love with the show. The first three seasons of the TV show were absolute comedy gold! When the movie was released, I was so excited to see Spongebob on the big screen! I saw it, and it has now become one of my top 5 favorite animated movies of all time!
First up, the characters. The characters that we all know and love from the TV show, are here in full force. The dynamics between Spongebob and Patrick are absolutely hilarious. So many memorable one-liners, my personal favorite being Spongebob saying, "you don't need a license to drive a sandwich." While some of the characters, like Sandy and Gary, receive only cameos, the new characters are just as, if not more, entertaining. King Neptune and Mindy were great additions, as were Dennis and David Hasselhoff. All in all, every character is great!
The plot of the movie is very creative, as is the environments. So many memorable locations: The Krusty Krab 2, Thug Tug, The Trench, Shell City and Goofy Goobers to name some of them. The plot of Spongebob and Patrick traveling to Shell City to return Neptune's stolen crown was so much fun to watch. Not to mention, this was the first time (not including the episode Pressure) that we got to see Spongebob and Patrick on the surface, interacting with the real world.
The animation in the movie is top notch. While hand-drawn animation might not look as realistic as 3-D animation, I have always appreciated still seeing hand-drawn animated films. The expressions with the characters are great, as are all the character designs.
In conclusion, The Spongebob Squarepants Movie is an absolutely amazing animated film that will surely not be forgotten. The characters are great and memorable, the plot is fun, the animation is great, and all the comedy jokes hit! I would highly recommend seeing this movie if you have not. The Spongebob Squarepants Movie absolutely gets a 10/10!!!
Star Wars: Battlefront (2015)
Very Disappointing...
I am a huge fan of the original Star Wars Battlefront games for Play Station 2. Those two games are two of my top 10 favorite games of all time, and both deserved 10 out of 10 stars. Because of this, I had very high hopes for the New Star Wars Battlefront. I played the game with my friends, and...
This game was disappointing for me. I had high hopes but not many of them were satisfied. However, this is not the worst game I have ever played. It may have a lot of flaws, but it also has some good things about it. The one thing that is really great about this game is the graphics. The graphics were great and were definite improvements from the first two games. The game also added some new game modes that were not in the previous games. However, those are the only two positives I see in this game.
On the other hand, there are quite a few negatives about this game. The biggest flaw in my opinion was excluding the option of picking between the Galactic Civil War and the Clone Wars. This feature gave the first two games a ton of variety, and some maps were even better on one of the two options. Another negative was the downgrade in the number of available Jedi the player can play as. There is only six playable Jedi, and the New Battlefront excluded a lot of great characters from the second game, such as: Yoda, Mace Windu, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Jango Fett, Darth Maul, and General Grievous. The last big negative was that the game wasn't complete on release. The game itself already cost $50, and there are 4 separate expansion DLCs. Each of those are $50. Really! The first two games were complete on release, why isn't this one?
In all, the New Star Wars Battlefront was very disappointing. It had less features, less characters, and was not complete on release like the first two Battlefront games. While the graphics are great, and there are some new features, the New Star Wars Battlefront, in my opinion, isn't worth the purchase. If you want a great Star Wars game, buy the first two Battlefront games. You will be glad that you did!
Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)
What a lovely day indeed!
I was excited to see this movie, but I didn't know what to expect. Before seeing this, I had never seen another Mad Max movie, and therefore had no idea about the story. But that all changed after I saw the movie.
Oh my gosh, this movie blew me away! The action in this movie was amazing and more importantly, practical! The action is what made this movie, however that wasn't the only great thing about this movie. The characters and the story were also very great. While I did like all the characters, Furiosa was the best!
All in all, this movie did everything right. It had great characters, a compelling story, fantastic music, and jaw-dropping action scenes. The final chase with the pole cats landing on the vehicles blew my mind! Amazing movie! The best movie of 2015 and one of my favorite movies ever! What a lovely day indeed!
