Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019)
Very disappointed
I was really impressed by the visuals in this movie and I have to say there were some pretty funny jokes. However, the plot was abysmal and the treatment of the female lead was also pretty antagonistic for no apparent reason. There was no real substance to this movie and it felt like it was just another money maker for produced for the name recognition of Godzilla
On the Basis of Sex (2018)
Excellent movie with some minor deficiencies
I really liked this movie overall! There were plenty of good laughs and you really could quite literally feel like how Ruth Bader Ginsburg must have felt during that moment. It really demonstrated some of the obstacles that she went through to be a lawyer as a woman in that era. This movie is slightly less thorough than the documentary but still worth watching. I do wish, however, that the ending had not been so abrupt. Great otherwise though!
How He Fell in Love (2015)
Great movie!
I loved this movie. There was such authenticity and passion in the acting and the script. The main characters' lives were fleshed out and you understood them without just an introduction into the romantic relationships between the two of them. In addition the movie did not seem to follow a generic script for romantic movies and added the additional novelty of a relationship between a woman who is a little bit older than the man. It also portrayed this relationship in a natural way like it happens in real life instead of making it awkward or weird. I also liked how well thought out the parts of the movie were- the ending made sense with the beginning and you get a sense of closure which was really nice. Overall, really good!
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (2016)
Alright- It had some good parts
I went into this movie a bit skeptical because I loved most of the Harry Potter movies (and books of course!) and didn't want this movie to ruin it for me. (Sorry for any spoilers). The beginning of the movie was very promising. It seemed like there was going to be some real plot development with the setting that was being portrayed but no. There were 3 mini plots that were somewhat unrelated all happening at the same time if anything. Even by the end you don't really get too much of a better understanding.
The adorable animals and the funny things that some of them do were definitely the best part of this movie. Other than that, everything else was blah. The character development of the female characters was even worse than that of the male characters. The primary role of one of them (Queenie) seemed to simply be a doll to be looked at. She was used as a way to once again remind us that our society thinks that women are only as good as they look. Not to mention the overly domestic and subservient/weak appearing roles that both Queenie and her sister played during several of the scenes was even more disheartening.
Overall, I wish that the plot was more thoroughly developed and these unnecessary stereotypes of women left out or diminished in this movie. If this had been the case I probably would have liked the movie more and given it like a 7 rating.
