Cars (2006)
Scrap
Admitedly I wasn't compelled to see this at the movies, But my friend had it on DVD and i watched it and to be honest, I just didn't like it.
The characters were there but they felt like just a sting of stereotypes - The mentor with a secret, the cocky rookie who makes good, the sweet girl, the hippi, the deliveranceman. It all rang with false sentimentality. Real false.
With these movies you always know pretty much how it's going to end, but it's the journey getting there that is entertaining (like the much superior Finding Nemo - Of course he is going to find him, but the journey, characters and all that were fantastic)
Reading the last paragraph made a thought came into my mind which could really sum up what was lacking, A character you want to see win.
You loose the main character at the start due to him being such a SOB You loose most of the town folk because they essentially take a man (car) prisoner and depriving him (it) of his freedom. You loose the nice chick cause she is just so freakin nice i wanted to dent her fender. and you loose the mentor with a secret because you just don't give a crap.
I mean, the cartoon shown before it (with the little girl and the steet buskers) was about 200% better than the (dare i say it) dreck that went after.
This movie IS the empty cup. Still good animation. hope the next one is better.
The Telephone (1988)
Wow!
Admitedly I rented this because of all the people who said how bad it was- and i got really sucked in.. it's funny the majority of people who like this movie also like theater- because i showed to a few theatrical friends and they both also liked it.
What people don't realize is this movie is NOT supposed to be a comedy it would be like saying the color purple should have had more "Jokes that worked"... any way .
The ending was fabulously twisted and creeped me out. In fact on subsequent viewings you can see how everything fits. Don't put blind faith in the opinions of others, you may be surprised. GIVE IT A GO!
