The Aeronauts (2019)
Can they ever make a movie without a super female?
I am a woman and a feminist and I cannot stand movies like this. Why wasn't she wearing a cape? What would have been so awful about telling the real story (that included two men) and using facts. It would have been breathtaking. Unfortunately, we must have a superhero or in this case superheroine treatment of the tale. Rewriting history to insert female heros where they did not exist does a great disservice to all the heroic women throughout history and all of their achievements.
Once Upon a Time in... Hollywood (2019)
Tarantinos best
I never wanted it to end. That said, I loved the ending. It made me weep and laugh at the same time. This is a movie I will watch multiple times.
Alfred Hitchcock Presents: Special Delivery (1959)
Haunting episode
This eerie episode made a terrific impression on me that has lasted my entire life...I was barely 6. In retrospect, I can see how it did reflect the unease and suspicion of the times lurking beneath the placid surface of suburbia. The insidious nature of the invasion of the mushrooms and the way they could worm their way into the core of each household through the innocent children was particularly creepy. As he opened the refrigerator to reveal nothing but mushrooms and his son handed him a sandwich filled with mushrooms one couldn't help but see parallels to the pods in the Invasion of the Body Snatchers.
I see an alarming parallel in the ubiquitous Alexas, Nests and other helper devices that are being welcomed into our homes, complete with cameras, microphones and wifi to record, document and upload our behavior. Alexas are bundled into purchases and promoted aggressively...aren't they wonderful? Personally, I will not have anything to do with them. Two days ago, one of them showed up at my house with the rest of the mail.
House on Haunted Hill (1959)
A horror classic
SPOILERS I first saw this as a child. Even then I noticed some inconsistencies in the story - how the strings on the skeleton were invisible and were apparently impervious to the acid, how Nora didn't notice the head in her suitcase was made of rubber among other things. But did we care? We thought it was wonderful! Pure camp. We watched this movie so many times that we memorized all the lines. It also features the best screaming session in horror movie history. This is one of the best Vincent Price films, although he seems somewhat bored in the role. Elisha Cook is particularly ghoulish as the narrator.
Oops, I've said too much. The ghosts are coming for me now...
Ilya Muromets (1956)
In a class of its own
I heartily agree, it was always a childhood favorite. The music is haunting and the scenery is beautiful. I have memorized most of the lines and how many times have I wished for Ilya's magic cloth? O for a steed like Chesnut Grey!
The special effects are precious, only those of us you truly enjoy 50's sci fi movies can appreciate the dragon, the wind demon and the forest creatures during the weaving scene.
I have tried to find an uncut version of this film because its hard edit indicate that there may be missing scenes. The Russians really know how to stage an epic! See it if you can.
