A Wrinkle in Time (2018)
You all are too harsh on this movie!
I've never read the book, though I've known of its existence prior to viewing the film. The writing left a lot to be desired, I found myself confused most of the time and the dialogue was cringe worthy sometimes. Those things aside, it is a beautifully filmed movie. I loved the creative visual choices made. Camera angles and lighting were quite immersive.
Oddly enough, being confused added to the otherworldly aspect I felt from the film. It gave me vibes that reminded me of the strangeness in Annihilation. It's a weird comparison, I know. Sometimes watching a strange movie that's hard to follow is a nice getaway from the normal.
Fishtales (2007)
Horrible, absolutely horrible!
The pacing is terrible, the acting is really cringey, and the whole thing makes zero sense. The film doesn't know what it wants to be. I would've given this a 1 star but that's reserved for movies like Manos: The Hands of Fate.
Avengers: Infinity War (2018)
What a mess...
I came into this movie ready to be disappointed because I heard all of the spoilers. I ended up being more disappointed than I ever could have expected. The movie is so over saturated that characters become useless to the "plot". I say "plot" because it's so paper thin that you can barely even call it a plot. Everyone in this movie seems to have been dumbed down to an incredibly low level. I felt my brain actually turning to goo due to the lack of sense in this film. I'm so glad I didn't pay to see this. Thank you local library. I give it a 4/10 only for the nice CGI and maybe 1 or 2 moderately funny jokes.
Pokémon the Movie: I Choose You (2017)
I Choose You! is pretty iffy.
Going into this review, I'd like to say that I've been a fan of Pokémon since 1998. I've seen the ups and downs of the Pokémon films, though at the end of the day I could always find things to like even if some of the movies weren't that great. I Choose You! falls into the category of "has more bad points than good but the good points shine brightly."
Looking at the good points, the animation is beautiful. Everything is vivid and wonderful to watch. The animation is a large improvement over previous Pokémon films. The angles and texture for the backgrounds were lovely. The companions were fresh and fun - their designs simple yet eye catching. The new plot elements were an interesting touch and I loved seeing more of Charizard's character development. You could really see how he was feeling from his expression and body language, which made his growth believable and easy to sympathize with as a viewer.
Now onto the disappointing aspects of the movie. Firstly, "Earth 2 Ash" as I like to call him, was almost unbearably frustrating and rude. Sure, original Ash had his moments but he wasn't as much of a blundering ignoramus Earth 2 Ash. I know they were trying to sneak in some character development but it was in a way destructive to the likability of Ash's character. Throughout the movie I found myself pretty much loathing the main character. Original Ash was an idiot, but at least he was a loveable idiot. I know people might defend this by saying, "Oh, but that was Marshadow's fault!" Marshadow amplified those mean thoughts that Ash had. Just because Marshadow was involved doesn't mean he didn't think those thoughts himself to some degree. That brings me to Marshadow. They just shoved the mythical Pokémon in the movie as a quick plot device without ever really letting us get to know anything about it. The "Rainbow Hero" plot made zero sense whatsoever. What is a Rainbow Hero's purpose exactly? To battle Ho-oh? Why? The pacing was pretty terrible because they tried to squeeze in so many different scenes drawn from the original plot. It felt scattered about and in the end, it didn't leave enough time for the main conflict to play out to satisfaction and the resolution was rushed. I think this movie is in the pool of least good Pokémon films, sitting alongside the likes of Genesect.
All in all, when watching this movie, don't get caught up about how it's different or the same as the original. Think of it as a new, alternate telling and don't let preconceived notions stop you from watching.
