Le samouraï (1967)
a french "mainstream movie"
be forewarned
this is a french movie.french movies have different conception of what's cool. They are obsessed with showing human frailty as much as Hollywood is with happy ending. In a sense this is a french mainstream movie.

That being said, Le Samourai is a bad movie. Jeff Costello the main character has shown little expertise as a hired gun, because he let himself be seen entering and exiting the office quarter of the club (the crime scene). even if the pianist didn't accidentally saw him in the corridor, there were still a lot witnesses who can describe the suspicious character who left the office quarter of the club.
Moreover the commissioner has little ground and evidence to commit a whole lot of police resources to stalk and eventually chase Costello.
Director Jean Pierre Meville was too eager to set off this movie of frailty of assassin, he forgot the building block
Kaze no tani no Naushika (1984)

it's a beautiful movie the setting is beautiful, the characters are well drawn as all ghilibi movies do. i love my neighbor totoro, kiki's delivery service, cat returns and porco rosso.
unfortunately i cant enjoy this movie because the way an army is presented.

Asbel on a small plane taking down a whole fleet of planes. utter nonsense. first in reality no way a fleet consists only of transport planes, transport planes will always be protected with a squadron of fighter air crafts.
the villagers with nothing but spirit successfully fighting back helpless tolmekian army.
why these two scenes in this movie. reflects what Japanese audiences are looking the entertainment. the meaning of asbel scene is a newcomer can take down the old establishment. the meaning of villagers scene is that people who go to small universities can beat those people who go to elite universities like Tokyo University, Waseda and Keio.
