The Meg (2018)
Needs an R version released on dvd
Really not a bad movie but seriously lacking in the gore department and not a whole bunch of real suspense here. The shark looks pretty good and the way they end it was clever. A lot underwater vehicle scenes, probably too much really. Definitely needed more gore and less whale guts/brains or whatever that was. I suppose they wanted a movie everyone could see but seriously not one moment of suffering or fighting it off, no one really even gets dragged around by the shark. It's all just CHOMP gone, CHOMP gone. That doesn't really instill the fear that a giant shark is murdering everyone and must be stopped ASAP. I liked because the jump scares were good and we saw it in an imax. It was better than the shallows but I liked it too. Not a Jaws level movie but way better than the revenge and better than jaws 3, not as good as 2 though. Come on give some gore on the dvd, let's see it.
Kong: Skull Island (2017)
Kong is King
I loved this movie, it was better than I thought it would be... and I thought it would be just okay. It gets going quickly and does not mess around with a bunch of nonsense. No time is wasted as the movie gets into motion and the wheels start rolling. John C Reilly is so good, one of the best. Samuel L Jackson was not great, i didn't like him in this role. I kept thinking of his lines from Pulp Fiction every time he spoke. I kept thinking he would shout out a similar line to his Snakes on a Plane signature remark. The rest of the cast was okay but some of the characters were unnecessary. That was no problem as the action spoke louder than the chance of any ruination of a movie by the same old Armageddon,Prometheus, & Interstellar dumb crew members on a super serious mission.
I like the 1976 and 2005 King Kong movies too, but this one is my new favorite. I read in many reviews here that if you like this movie you must be a real dummy. I don't get why anyone would say that. This was better than the last two Godzilla movies any way you slice it. I saw this at an IMAX in Real D and it blew me away. I'll buy it on DVD when it comes out on DVD. Let the haters hate, because I predict word of mouth is going to make this a very successful film. Many people will say it was better than they thought it would be. Give it a chance, you might say that too. P.S. - the music was great, basically likened to the soundtrack of Forrest Gump but not as many total songs. One great song I actually didn't even recognize as the crew headed near the beginning of the movie.
Insidious (2010)
nailed it perfectly
For what this movie is, it is a perfect movie. Anyone who would say this is not a good entertaining horror film is operating on a personal agenda. The bottom line is go see this movie so the filmmakers can make more movies like this for the people like me who love them. Everyone else steer completely clear of the entire production and any like it please. For it be you who want our thrill rides to disappear and be lost forever only to make more room for the countless bloated over budgeted, Real D and CGI infested crapfests that survive only because fat suits have billions to burn on marketing and promotion. It is the little engine that could (scare the bejees out of you) that will be profit by word of mouth at the box office and long after in rental and DVD sales. So please if you heart these horror films as I do go see this one on the big screen and get those goosebumps like never before to stand at attention until laying to rest fully satisfied that films like this will never die, just their critics.
Now here is why we love it...Insidious is an absolutely horrifying film. A sledgehammer to you senses and a tattoo you will not easily remove anytime soon on your nerves. I want to see it again RIGHT NOW. I want to own it, so I can look into madness on pause and view nightmarish fiends violently attacking innocent human beings in slow motion. This movie is a dance with something unimaginable but the same time made seemingly possible. A beautiful family is at the mercy of a malevolent crew of demons and it does not matter how or why but they must wage war to survive and what a fantastic battle it is. The bumbling stumbling ghost tracker crew must not only explain, discover, and draw out the adversary but also defend itself against it and folks the good guys do not always win anymore in these great low budget freakshows that offer absolutely no apologies.
You will get no blood, not one drop. What you will get is uneasy and restless from the eerie sounds of footsteps, whispers, creaking doors banging piano keys and ear piercing violin strings set to shadowy walk bys that happen so fast you will leap from your seat so high you may think you have entered an Astral Plain yourself. So prepare yourself and get a good grip because unlike the moron that sat behind talking and giggling YOU will keep your eyes wide open, your mouth closed YOU will not be disappointed in what you see.
Skyline (2010)
Disregard the negative reviews!
Pay no attention to the bad rating and reviews of this movie. I avoided this one in theaters because of the reviews I read and now after seeing it on PPV I really wish I had made the trip to the big screen. Unlike your typical Hollywood hero and a positive message built in, this one is full of despair and depravity. It is destined to be a cult classic because of its low budget feel but high budget effects.
Some reviewers say this movie should have been straight to DVD and "avoid avoid avoid" and don't waste your money. Let me say that these reviews make me wonder who is actually saying these things. Do they really want another Independence Day? This is the kind of story that I have waited so long for Hollywood to produce. One with no hero or built in preachy message explaining that we win because we are the best because we win because we are best (repeated purposefully).
There are some scenes before the halfway mark of Skyline that made me think no matter what happens now the reviewers are wrong. I absolutely loved the ending as well, and felt as though they had a few alternative ending choices and went with the one that felt the most like a comic book style ending, that is very, very cool.
I personally would have liked more gore than black goo and blue glow but I am not complaining about this movie at all, as that has already been done here too many for no apparent reason and hopefully a sequel won't be far away. Please follow the exact same formula again (low budget movie making with high budget eye candy). Keep DeCaprio and the flock out of it and I will be in the theater for that one.
Let Me In (2010)
Fantastic and highly recommended !
No spoilers in this review, in my opinion you would be best served knowing as little as possible going into this one. The important thing is that you know it is one of the best movies made in 20 years. They do not make movies like this anymore, not this good, and if they did... one would have to dig very deep to find it. This film is a breath of fresh air to me sort of like District 9 was upon it's release. Let Me In is beautiful, dark, horrific, and never wavers from brilliance. I was unaware this was a remake or a book or any of that. I was not expecting to be so pleasantly surprised. I knew none of the actors, there was no Robert De Niro or Renee Zellwhatever scrunching up their faces into frowny smiles making me forget about the story at hand (thankfully). There was no 30 year old high cheek boned throwaway playing a 20 year old studmuffin (thank you thank you!!!). None of that, just a great story with a great look.
I wish I had seen this when I was 10, I think it would have been my favorite movie of all time. The acting is fantastic, everyone is perfect in this one and very believable. Look at the other reviews here at IMDb, everyone liked this movie and I can see why. Please make more movies like this, a movie I do not feel I was cheated out of my money on. Please check this one out and enjoy the intense and wonderful film. Twilight fans steer clear, of the movie and of me.
Empire Records (1995)
GWAR is the best thing about this movie
Every time this movie is on i watch it for one part . no , not the part when Liv Tyler gets undressed , the part where GWAR eats mark while he's watching the video for their song " Saddam-a-go-go " . otherwise this movie is complete crap , don't even argue it . Even Roger Ebert agrees with this .GWAR had a similar part in another absolutely terrible movie called Blind Date , also the only good part of that movie . I cant believe the one guy is the the same guy who played Slater "catch ya later" in dazed and confused . He was so cool in that movie and so uncool in empire retards , i mean empire records . Please do people really think life is like this movie ? Is'nt that what its going for ? I've never worked in a record store but i've seen High Fidelity enough times to know it's not like this , and the difference between a good movie and a bbbbaaaaadddd one .
GWAR: Phallus in Wonderland (1992)
deserves the grammy
GWAR was nominated for a grammy but did not win for this movie . I wonder what did , because i would find it hard to believe it was more entertaining than Phallus , in fact any GWAR movie (and there are quite a few ) would probably be better . i still own the original VHS tape purchased in the early 90's . my favorite part , and there are many , is near the beginning when the kid gets hit by (GWAR's manager)Sleazy P. Martini's limo and he begs to meet GWAR . Sleazy says OK and a giant hook comes from the sky to pull the boy to GWAR's lair . We then see BalSac the jaws of death reeling him in like fish . THE ACTION BEGINS THERE AND NEVER LETS UP . Buy this movie and all GWAR's movies .
