Overlord (2018)
The perfect blend
This movie has the perfect blend of horror and science fiction without resorting to often overworked aliens/extraterrestrials. The action is pretty non-stop once the flick gets rolling along (which takes a mere 15-20 minutes) and the trope of Mad-Scientist with some evil Nazi flavor is well played. Throw in more than the bare minimum of character building and interaction (something many movies in this genre and style forget) and you have good guys who you regret to see bite it, and bad guys whose demise you cheer! If you like this style of movie, you won't regret the time spent with this bloody romp.
OXV: The Manual (2013)
Perfect Blend Between Sci Fi and Romantic Movies
I don't normally watch a lot of romantic dramas or romantic comedies. It's not that I don't enjoy them, it's just that I enjoy other genres more. But this movie is a great mix of the two making it 'sciency' enough to not only keep my interest, but also just enough love story to make it sort of heartwarming as well. It follows the common trope that behind every breakthrough or discovery is a motivation and that often the motivation is not just to innovate for the sake of progress-sometimes the motivation is love. The History of Time Travel (2014)
This was a well executed take on the genre
It's very obvious this movie doesn't have the top dollar actors or amazing visual effects we have come to expect in a science fiction movie, but if you're a fan of the time travel sub genre of sci fi, then this will be a treat. The story is entertaining and not at all lacking in any of the details necessary to pull off a movie about time travel. I enjoyed it for its simplicity and accuracy.
The VVitch: A New-England Folktale (2015)
Somewhat tense at times, but not truly horrifying
This movie was not the best in this genre or style. It was not slasher-graphic, so if that's what draws you, skip this one. It was tense without being really frightening. I feel that the movie tried to build terror and suspense, but I watched this around 8am after a good nights sleep and had to back up a couple times because I dozed off. It seems to want to be a more sophisticated horror flick, but did not provide enough chills for my taste. The imagery was also dark at times...which can be pretty spooky if the action and characters are detailed enough for you to still see what's going on. Lastly, I found the language (pilgrim-speak?) more difficult to follow than say...Shakespeare or Homer. Keep your subtitles on and pay close attention!
