Thelma (2024)
Hilarious retelling of a true story
Thelma is a hilarious retelling of a true story of how a 90-something grandma tracked down the men who scammed her and got her money back. (The real "Thelma" can be seen at the very end of the movie.) There are plenty of heartwarming moments mixed in with lots of fun and laughter. It's awesome to see a grandma be her own action hero on her quest to do what the police will not - find the scammers who are calling elderly people to claim their grandchildren are in jail and need an attorney. They then have the mark send a large amount of cash to a PO Box to pay the "retainer". Unfortunately for these guys, they scammed the wrong old lady. As Thelma and her friend Ben cruise the streets of LA on his fancy scooter trying to get to the drop box address, many funny and heartwarming moments happen along the way.
Ghostlight (2024)
Touching, beautiful
Ghostlight is a touching story of a family dealing with a tragedy, each in their own way. As they seem to grow apart in the midst of a lawsuit over a loved one's death, the father begins to discover the story of Romeo and Juliet through a community theater group he stumbles into. Eventually the tragic tale begins to mirror the events of his son's death, leading to the start of healing for him, his wife and daughter. Prepare to shed tears as you watch this excellent film.
I thoroughly enjoyed this independent film. The family depicted is played by an actual family who are also all actors. This adds to the realism of the film. The entire cast is wonderful and shows a range of emotions that is very believable.
Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies (2023)
Does no one remember the movie accurately?
This show isn't meant to be a remake of the movie. But some of these bad reviews seem to have forgotten what the original movie was really like. It was made in the 70s. Olivia Newton-John was a 30-something playing a high school student and was obviously not one. They tackled social issues like Russo being slut-shamed and being worried about being pregnant. It came down hard on both the Socs and the gangs. It had songs that were not 50s style ("Hopelessly Devoted" anyone?). It had a flying car at the end and an entire cartoon scene during "Greased Lightning". Plus it was based on a popular Broadway play. So get over yourselves.
This show is cute and fun. It definitely has some more pop/50s style songs. Yes, it reflects actually more 50s realistic social issues like women seen as unfit to lead and Black people rarely appreciated for who they really are. That is not fantasy. That's realistic. Idk why anyone thinks that's not how the past was. It's socially conscious and yet fun. I enjoy the Pink Ladies and the shenanigans they get up to while trying to make their points and make Rydell fun for all.
School Spirits (2023)
Three episodes in, I love it
I really expected this to be a teen angst show that was a distraction, but by the end of the first episode I was invested. Character development is quick and engaging for the main character and her living friends. The other "school spirits" start to follow quickly in other episodes, as well as other living characters.
Someone mentioned in another review about how the dead characters were able to intersect with things in the world, but that's actually explained in the first episode. There aren't many plot holes I've really found, or at least not many I can't overlook so far.
At this point, the show is a great mystery with an interesting twist that in looking forward to watching each week.
Alert: Missing Persons Unit (2023)
Never gets better
I don't know why I watched all the episodes, but I did. I think I was waiting to see how long it took the parents to figure out what was going on with their "son" even though it was obvious. Normally I'm not a big one for being a stickler about details on procedurals - like not everything can be exactly like it is in real life, it wouldn't be interesting. But there is no way I can accept the missing persons unit (especially the head of the department and the detectives on the case) get the knowledge of a missing person through an alert sent to everyone else in the city. Or the department lieutenant calls everyone, victim, suspect, families, "baby". Or their son in returned after six years and a sudden, unpaid ransom demand and NO ONE has him thoroughly checked by a doctor or runs a DNA test immediately. Or cares about who took him or other victims and his parents are missing persons detectives????
This whole show is ridiculous, and I'm glad it ended like it did. I hope that's the actual end.
Quantum Leap (2022)
Of course it's not the original
Of course this isn't the original, but apparently people can't let it be 30 years in the future and see things have changed over time. Yes, a lot of the science is explained in the first episode. Hopefully there are viewers new to the show who want to know how things supposedly work. And I love that Addison can't tell Ben about their personal life because of the side effects. Who cares about their races? If that's putting you off watching, you need a life outside TV anyway.
I thought the pilot was a fun re-introduction to Quantum Leap with an updated system and new characters who are still interested in Sam and Al's work. I hope in future episodes, Ben gets the chance to be more involved with the people who he leaps into's lives now that he's somewhat caught up on what happened to him.
