Superman Returns (2006)
I will wait for a different Superman
As expected Superman Returns is technically better than its predecessors. However I did not like it as much as the previous movies. In my view the script is inadequate for a Superman movie. In Superman Returns our hero became too human, too fragile, emotionally vulnerable as anyone of us. There are less action scenes and more drama. Superman is still the same boy scout, flying to save the old lady from falling the stairs. Superman as Clark Kent is also the same dumb reporter that nobody notices. The actor mimics well Clark Kent as previously played by Cristopher Reeve.
I don't know what other viewers felt when they saw Superman Returns, however I would expect more action scenes, and some more imagination, that would bring us a different superman, not a repetition of the previous movies. Next time I hope someone writes a script with other villain than Lex Luthor, maybe an alien enemy, with scenes in outer space. Superman is that, sheer amusement, special visual effects, and not a character almost 100% human, fighting its emotions and inner conflicts. For this purpose I look for different kind of movie, not Superman.
Quicksilver (1986)
quicksilver as an alternative life promoter
I liked quicksilver and still do today after 20 years of its release date. Instead of looking at Quicksilver as a bunch of losers who ran a bike, I appreciated the kevin Bacon part as a character who suffered from a severe setback, and found in cycling a way to overcome depression and become a loser. The initial scene where he goes on a taxi and paid the taxi driver to race a bike courier, show how fascinated he was by this "alternative life", representing more freedom, athletic performance, and no ties to an office or a company organization. For me this was the main interest of Quicksilver, besides its music, which is quite good.
As a negative point, I regret that none of the characters, followed a different path to its life, as a result of the quicksilver experience, and in fact they all dream of having a regular job, making more money, etc. In fact the script is light, trying to please a large audience, and I think the movie was reasonably successful at the time it was released. I recommend viewing it or buying the DVD.
