Great show ... but ...
26 May 2019
This really is a great show - great story lines, great acting - but: they are using a ridiculously high amount of the "F" word, which is purely gratuitous and completely unnecessary. A more thoughtful writing and producing staff could have done the same show without any of that and made it JUST as good! My wife doesn't want to watch any more (we saw 4 episodes together). I will probably watch the rest of them when I'm alone, but my objection remains. They're only allowing all that swearing because it's Netflix and they can get away with it. It's a shame.

Nice Recovery
8 May 2019
When one of the main players in a TV drama suddenly leaves, the change seems forced and awkward, but that's not the case here. I was very sad about the situation involving Lori Laughlin-I loved her in this show, and I'm disappointed and sad about what she has (allegedly) done-but the first scene in which her absence was explained was done with gentleness and style. Moving ahead without her really felt seamless to me. I love the show, and expect more good things to come.

Liked it!
7 May 2019
Dear Other Reviewers, I don't care if the baby bump was visible, or if they mispronounced a few words, or if some of the geographical references were skewed ... it was a very cute story, well acted (mostly) and believable. I thought the chemistry between the two leads was very good. You need to remember that the actors are playing roles-in this case, a pregnant woman was playing a NON pregnant woman. Big deal. I liked it. 8 stars.

Good and Bad
1 April 2019
The Good: This was the first episode I've seen of this show (missed season 1 entirely). I thought it was a good storyline, and I learned a bit about virtual reality type on line games and the lingo. I'm not sure how I felt about the verdict, which I won't reveal here.

The Bad: I absolutely HATE the so-called songs used by this and many other shows in the soundtrack, most of which have nothing whatsoever to do with what's going on in the show. It's awful! It detracts a LOT from the show as a whole. Please producers, stop doing that!

Just a note to reviewer "BishopJOgles" - Dean Jagger played the Bishop. Tom Courtenay was the young priest.

This is an excellent show, well written and well acted.

But Munroe is a self-righteous ass. I hope they get rid of him.

Just one small notch above porn.

This is really a terrible movie. We walked out after putting up with it for almost an hour. Much of the dialogue was muffled ... we wished there were subtitles! The music was horrible-the recurring thump-thump-thumping was the worst of it. If there was a plot, I couldn't find it. What a waste of great actors, great costumes, and great scenery. IMDb needs to have a "zero" rating.

Christmas with a View (2018 TV Movie)
6/10
Very bad start, very good finish
19 December 2018
Okay, I've just read most of the other reviews of this movie and I completely agree with a couple of them who said the first few minutes were so bad they just turned it off. I felt that way too at about the 15 minute mark, but I just left it on because I was just chillin' at home with nothing else in particular to do. Those two ditzy chicks were awful. I was sorry to see the bad plastic surgery on Jess Walton-she used to be so attractive. And I just couldn't buy Vivica Fox as the Mom. I was ready to hate the character of Shane, but before long he had won me over. And Kaitlyn Leeb as Clara was really quite engaging. I won't give away the ending, but trust me that it really does make enduring the first half of the movie worth the pain it takes to watch it. I give it 6 stars: 1 for the beginning, 4 for the plot development later in the movie, and 10 for the finale, making an average (in my mind) of 6.

A Majestic Christmas (2018 TV Movie)

Nice, Predictable, but one flaw
5 December 2018
A Majestic Christmas is a nice story very clearly set in the Hallmark formula, generally well acted and produced. One glaring error (or several errors really) was in the performance of O Holy Night: some notes in the melody were wrong, some of the harmonies were VERY wrong, and the word "divine" is pronounced "dih-vine," not DEE-vine! Anyone who has ever sung in a choir at Christmas would know this, and the music staff on the film should have know also. Otherwise, I have no real objections.

Touching Thanksgiving Story
17 November 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I write in strong opposition to the reviews posted by "knuckle47" and "bote." Granted, this episode is very different from most of them, but far from being weak and failing, I found it to be a lovely, touching story revolving around the Grover family. I loved Louis Gossett and Gladys Knight as the grandparents, and the final resolution of the differences between Lou Grover and his brother was very sweet.

Opposing Point of View
2 October 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I write in opposition to the other three reviewers. You may well be correct about the legalities, etc., but HEY! - just accept the premise and enjoy the movie. We thought it was a lovely story; we enjoyed how the distant relative gradually grew to love the place too, and especially how the community, inspired by Jenny's warmth and loving nature, got together to help them out. Oh, sure, it's a predictable Hallmark movie, but it's a sweet story, the characters of Jenny and Brian were well played, not overly sappy. Just watch it and enjoy.

Love it!
1 October 2018
This show is such a crackup! It's crazy, snide, silly, occasionally serious, and just great campy fun! The four very different main characters are well-defined, and bounce off each other with comic genius. Martin Mull's somewhat confused character is especially clever. 10 stars. I hope it goes on for a long time.

Minority Report
28 August 2018
Okay, I guess my review is going to be a minority report, but I strongly disagree with the two reviewers who gave this a 1-star rating. Yes, the senator and the comedian were both quite unlikeable ... at first. But their characters showed remarkable development in the face of a desperate situation. The outcome was touching, and felt genuine. I can't argue with those who say the storyline wasn't realistic, because I have no idea about what would be realistic ... but I thought this was a very good episode with a good message: "All parents love their children"-well done.

Like Father (2018)
7/10
Could have been a great movie
18 August 2018
Like Father could have been a great movie. It's a beautiful, heart-tugging story, and for the most part wonderfully acted, particularly by the two leads, Kristen Bell and Kelsey Grammer; but the writers opted to include a lot of gratuitous foul language, which knocked 3 stars off my rating. It seems to me that when writers stoop to using that kind of language, they are just going for shock value; it's much more of a challenge to write dialogue that grabs the viewer without the unnecessary use of profanity. (One excellent example of what I'm talking about is the movie "The Magic of Belle Isle," with Morgan Freeman.)

The characters in this story are educated, civilized people. To make them sound like gutter trash is uncalled for. Come on, writers! THINK a little bit when you're writing this stuff. Be clever, not lowbrow.

The Waltons: The Burden (1979)

Good story that could have bee better
28 July 2018
"The Burden" starts out as a good story but it seems to me that Jim Bob's overzealousness and sudden instant recall of chapter-and-verse Bible quotes gives it an air of preachiness that The Waltons doesn't usually have. A kid who's all about working on cars is suddenly a walking Bible encyclopedia-it just doesn't ring true. If the storyline was more about his searching for meaning in his own life and less about going out to save souls it would have worked better. I give it a 6 star rating because of the good intentions of the writers and producers, and the tender way in which Daddy brings Jim Bob around to clearer thinking. True Waltons fans will always include this episode in their routine, but if you're turned off by sermonizing, you might want to skip it.

The Waltons: The Yearning (1978)
Season 7, Episode 11

A little sappy, a little sweet
23 July 2018
The Yearning is one of those Waltons episodes that kind of just sits there. Rabid fans like myself love the characters and the development of life on Waltons Mountain, but sometimes the episodes are less than great-not often, but it happens. In this episode, 13-year-old Elizabeth gets a crush on a young minister. I guess they were going for a bit of comic relief with the skunk-in-the-parsonage storyline, but it was only mildly amusing. The sub-plot involving Erin and the Baldwin ladies was a little better. The redeeming part of this episode was at the end, where Miss Emily discovers an unexpected treasure, and Daddy & Elizabeth have a wonderful moment. All in all, a watchable episode, but not really one of the better ones.

The Waltons: The Portrait (1978)

An intense episode
18 July 2018
I must disagree with the writer of the one other review for this episode. I see it as an intensely vivid portrait of a very troubled man, obviously suffering from what we now call PTSD. Perhaps it's true that none of the regular characters were "advanced" as the other reviewer put it, but this episode wasn't really about them; it was about Derek, and the horrors of war. Jared Martin gave a strong performance and Mary McDonough was excellent in support of his storyline. As for the secondary story about Grandma's bird, well, there needed to be some occasional relief in the episode, and that was as good as anything else might have been.

Flawed, but it does have moments
17 July 2018
This is one of the very few episodes of The Waltons that I don't much care for, but even so, it has some good moments. However, I find it very hard to accept that little Josh is suddenly a very good trumpet player! This is a story line that the writers/producers must have just pulled out of thin air. It is embarrassingly obvious that the actor has no idea how to play the trumpet. Despite all of that, there are some scenes in which the goals of being unprejudiced and open minded are nicely illustrated. Unless you're committed to seeing every episode, this one is skippable.

An Important Message
17 July 2018
Unlike others who have expressed misgivings about this episode (not on IMDb reviews, but in other places) I find this to be a strong episode with an important message about not just tolerating, but accepting and affirming people who are different from us. When Grandfather Joseph (Jerado Decordovier) talks to Elizabeth near the end of the episode, it is a touching and deeply meaningful monologue. Also, this episode shows John Walton as a fallible person, who can learn from his experiences and grow as a person. Kami Cotler as Elizabeth gave a lovely innocent performance here. Don't let the unlikely coincidence of the location of the Indian burial ground distract you from the quality of this excellent story.

Get It Right
1 May 2018
The actors, directors and producers are definitely on "Thin Ice" when it comes to letting stupid mistakes in the English language get through to the final cut. One actor said "nucular" instead of nuclear, and Tea Leoni herself said "artic" instead of arctic. Call me picky if you want to, but it seems to me that these kinds of obvious oversights are part of the reason American kids can't speak proper English anymore.

Bad Kennedys
18 January 2018
"Dear Mrs. Kennedy" was an excellent episode, with the glaring exception of not just Michael C. Hall, but ALL THREE of the actors portraying Kennedys. None of them looked, acted, or sounded like the great historical persons they were attempting to portray. I was frankly shocked, since up until this episode, "The Crown" has been practically faultless in every way. I can only ask, What were the producers thinking?

Outstanding episode
3 December 2017
Far from being the "worst" episode ever, this riveting study of a woman in the depths of emotional crisis had us on the edge of our seats from start to finish. Melora Walters gave a magnificent performance, as did Joanna Going as her sister. Be prepared to have your gut wrenched as you watch this. It's horrifying … and well worth the time.

Foreshadowing Star Trek?
13 July 2017
I had another look at "Judgment Night" today - and I had to laugh! At one point the captain calls to the engine room and tells the engineer that "we simply have to have more" power from the engines … and if "you can give me maximum speed for 12 more hours …" and the engineer interrupts saying, "Captain, these engines needed an overhaul 2 months ago; instead of that they're getting worked to death!" It reminded me of Captain Kirk (Star Trek) and Scotty: "Scotty, give me more power" and Scotty replies, "Captain, they're gonna blow any moment!" or words to that effect. Then, the captain turns to his first mate and asks, "What do you think, Number One?" which sounded just like Captain Picard and Commander Riker in Next Generation. Maybe Rod Serling had a premonition of new shows to come?

Love Blossoms (2017 TV Movie)

Some Smiles, Some Yawns
19 February 2017
Love Blossoms is a very typical Hallmark romantic movie, complete with the beautiful "heroine," the handsome "hero," the handsome boyfriend/fiancée, and the beautiful but devious "witch." The plot revolves around our heroine finishing the development of a new perfume which her late father had created. The movie is rather slow, and downright boring in spots, but it does have a nice, smile-producing ending scene. If you've got a lot of free time and like these kinds of "sappy" movies (as my wife and I do), then watch it.

Pretty Good Story, but
11 September 2015
(Big Sigh) … "In the Heat of the Night" is a wonderful show, and "When the Music Stopped" is a pretty good story, BUT Robert Goulet as a country-western singer? No. It doesn't work. At all. He is simply not believable in the role! And the songs he sings are very amateurish.

Gary Crosby is his usual affable self as the manager/sound man (whatever he was) Mal Talbot, and Joe Dorsey was strong as the angry songwriter Ace McCabe. Alan Autry ("Bubba") gave a good performance as the number one fan who became disillusioned by the events.

All in all, it was a good story. It's just too bad it was severely damaged by the horrible miscasting of Bob Goulet. He was a fine talent, but not as a country singer. Now if Merle Haggard, or someone like that, had done the role, it would have made huge difference.
