The Banshees of Inisherin (2022)
Funny dialog in a story that drags and leads nowhere
I was excited to watch this film after seeing the high star marks and the fact that it is nominated for Best Film at the Academy Awards this year. Now I'm left thinking that Hollywood is a bunch of pretentious frauds who want to seem superior to the masses who like films with excitement, storylines, and anything relatable. While there are some funny moments in the film, the general bleakness of these people's lives due to their own stupidity is hard to watch. The conversations are often unnatural to how people actually speak and the actions of the characters are not normal to what any sane human would actually do. His sister is the only relatable person in the whole thing, and she leaves the rest of the crazy people to start a better life. At the end of the almost 2 hours, I was left wondering what I just watched and why it was nominated for anything other than cinematography. I'm just glad I didn't pay to watch this in a theater.
Your Place or Mine (2023)
Couldn't finish it
I really went into this movie thinking I would love it based solely on how much I enjoy Reese Witherspoon and Ashton Kutcher... but the writing is so terrible that there was no way to save it with all the great acting in the world. The lines are odd and unnatural, very weirdly forced. I had to turn it off 20 minutes in. It was extremely disappointing, since I was really looking forward to the formulaic Reese Witherspoon romantic comedy that we've all grown up loving. I would've been happy with a cheesy Ashton Kutcher flick. Unfortunately, this just missed the mark. The best part were the side characters, her friends... and that tells you how bad it was.
Echoes (2022)
Unnecessarily confusing
I feel like this had a good premise for a storyline, but in an effort to keep the viewer on their toes, they made it confusing with a lot of back and forth between the twins, who is who, and flashbacks to the past.
It got a little cheesy at times, and there were even some parts that showed the sisters doing things that seem unnecessary to the plot, and when they tried to explain why it was done later in the film, the explanation didn't clarify anything.
It was well cast, and Bomer and Monaghan are great actors, but the material they were given and even some directorial choices have it a made-for-tv feel...but overall it was entertaining for a few hours.
The Orville (2017)
Great show for people who don't like sci-fi!
I don't like Star Trek or Star Wars or any sci-fi, really. But this show does a great job of combining just the right amount of humor into a dramatic show that focuses on new takes on social issues- from our reliance on social media to form our opinions to racism. Appropriate for older kids while entertaining for adults.
Evil: E Is for Elevator (2021)
Why all the dumb choices?
I get it that Kristen is the "skeptical non-believer" but at this point in the show, she's actually seen a lot of supernatural and demonic things....so WHY ON EARTH would she take her daughters to test an elevator that's possibly a portal to hell? Like, even if it's a SLIGHT possibility, no one would put their children in harm's way. Hell, she wouldn't even take them to work on something NOT evil because her children are unruly and loud. Kristen is starting to become unlikable as a character.
The Lost Daughter (2021)
Well done, well acted, goes nowhere
I wanted to like this movie, but it kept leaving me wanting more... more detail, more explanation, just more of everything. And then it just ends. The main character is slightly unlikable from the start, and there's no real explanation given as to her blackouts and weird, off-putting personality. Disappointing overall because it doesn't have a clear plot or point.
Cold Case: A Perfect Day (2005)
The BEST episode of Cold Case, HANDS DOWN!
I love everything about this episode. The complex storyline and the tragedy and desperation of each character is nothing short of gripping. The fact that the antagonist had been dead for years, yet since all his victims wanted to look out for each other and not have any contact in case it lead to his finding his wife and child and hurting them, just makes the whole story more tragic. You feel for each of the protagonists and the challenges they faced all those years ago due to how society was back then.
American Horror Stories (2021)
Disappointed is an understatement!
Being an avid fan of AHS, I had high expectations, as the bar had been set really high and the original has rarely not delivered (can we all just forget Roanoke ever happened?) But the first installment of Stories is basically a recycled Murder House with almost none of the original ghosts (where did they go?) and a protagonist that you don't empathize with. How am I supposed to root for her when I don't even like her? Or her dads. We've already seen the "gay couple with relationship issues" in this house, and these guys don't hold a candle to Zachary Quinto's flare. We've also already seen the "moody teenager who just had to move" in Violet, but Scarlett has none of her likeability. They literally even recycled the idea of using a color for her name. Feels like they thought they could put anything in front of the loyal fans and we'd eat it up, but this new iteration is like lukewarm leftovers!
American Horror Stories: The Naughty List (2021)
Predictable and I hated every character!
The storyline of influencers going too far and losing their empire, only to get their popularity back upon their demise, was a great basis for a story. The cheesy killer Santa trope and campy ways he goes after each character felt too predictable, familiar and played out. And believe me when I say that by 5 minutes in, the main stars are so unbearable that you can't wait for them to die so you don't have to listen to them or watch them anymore! I get it, you're supposed to hate them, but because of their influencer lifestyle, not because the actors are terrible and the script is cringeworthy.
American Horror Stories: Ba'al (2021)
The surprises keep coming in this one!
Just when you think you know where this episode is going, BAM! PLOT TWIST! And then when you're fascinated with the story as it's unfolding, BAM! Another plot twist! The acting is great and the effects are spot-on! Finally feels like Stories had found its groove!
American Horror Stories: Feral (2021)
Terrible ending!
The acting, as usual for all AHS episodes, is great. The story had a promising start, then it just....ended. It felt like the writers wanted to shock more than build any sort of connection with the audience. This new AHS franchise is very hit or miss.
