Fallout: The End (2024)
Crawl out to the Fallout
As a huge Fallout fan and after seeing some of the trailers my expectations for the show were lukewarm at best. I could not be happier with how wrong I was. The attention to detail is actually mind boggling. Everything in the show screams Fallout while simultaneously not shoving it in your face. Basically every scene had something new from the Fallout universe that I couldn't help but smile at. The story itself feels like an extension of the game in the best way possible. If you're a Fallout fan I cannot see how you won't love this show.
Trying to set aside my love for the series itself I still think the show would stand up phenomenally for someone who knows next to nothing about the already pre-established world that it takes place in. The three main characters who were introduced all have a good amount of time to let the viewer really get to know them and their motivations. The visuals are top-notch, it has the signature tongue in cheek type humor, dialogue is well thought out, pacing is on point, and there isn't one actor that I can really fault anything with.
It's always really difficult to adapt something that so many people love. But wow, did this first episode exceed my expectations in every way. Thank you to everyone involved in the project for giving such a faithful and fun adaptation to an already fantastic world. 10/10.
All the Light We Cannot See: Episode #1.1 (2023)
The good, the bad, and the adaptation
This show is all over the place so far. Set design is fantastic and some of the acting is great. However, being adapted from a well loved book, which I haven't read, the dialogue is at some points so ridiculously forced that I can't really get immersed into the show. I get that introducing the characters in the first episode is important, but at some points it's almost literally "I'm (fill in the blank) and this is what I do." One of the key examples is the bakery scene. Marie walks in and sees her uncle for about 15 seconds where he proceeds to explain the whole point of what she's doing instead of letting the story naturally play out. Everything seems so forced and does far too much hand holding in assuming the audience won't be able to pick up on characters without flat out telling them what's going on. Almost every scene in the first half of the episode is some variation of the bakery scene in terms of character introductions. I think I may be being too harsh because other aspects of the show are great and I'll continue watching. But to me these aspects are pretty hard to ignore. However, l love the fact that they actually used visually impaired actors who did their job quite well. 6.5/10.
Haute tension (2003)
Minimal Tension
I really hate giving poor reviews so I think 4 stars is fair. The makeup artists deserve a lot of credit for what made this movie good. Other than that I don't really know what else I was impressed by in this movie. The 'protagonists' had about as much survival instinct as a potato. Everybody had to have been extraordinarily hearing impaired. My first two gripes became moot points with the terribly executed 'twist.' It made no sense. Zero. So much has to be changed in the first half for it to work. Unfortunately it didn't, because if there was a heavy amount of rewriting the twist would have been awesome. Nobody did anything in this movie that a rational, or even irrational, human would do. I wish nothing but the best for everybody involved in making this movie, and I'm happy for their success. It's clearly a good movie for other people, just not for me.
The Last of Us: Long, Long Time (2023)
Greatest (post-apocalyptic) Love Story Ever Told
I'm sure this episode will be polarizing to many fans of the game. I get it. However, the way that this episode portrays the passage of time to get to present day was absolutely brilliant. The acting from all parties were phenomenal. I'm sure many people will have problems with the pacing, but the fact that the writers and director could pack in such a beautiful story in such a short amount of time is astounding. I'm rating this a 10/10 specifically because of how masterfully the episode was done. It is somewhat of a filler episode, but as far as filler episodes go this is hands down the best that I've ever seen.
