Silent Hill (2006)

Beautiful paint job but shoddy construction

I'm many ways I wish there were more movies like this, set in an unnatural world close to home. The mood of the foggy dilapidated town where it rains ash were absolutely beautiful. The music perfectly setting the mood and great camera work. I never played the game but I could clearly see gameplay layout- new location, new monster encounters, not so subtle clues about where to go to next. All of this is fine, I quite enjoyed it. In its best moments the movie reminded me of "The Cell" and "The Ring", with its atmosphere and world building. The big problem for me with this movie was the script, with its shallow two dimensional characters and empty repeating dialogue. The plot line also disappoints, the movie grinds to a halt and we are told way too much. The mysterious atmosphere fizzles out and the stakes, which never felt that high, doesn't feel that important anymore. Radha Mitchells portrayal of Rose Da Silvia is a empty husk of a character, much like a video game protagonist. Granted the script doesn't give her much to work with but it's SO boring, who is this character? The clear stand out in the acting department is Alice Kriges chilling cult leader, I was always enthralled when she appeared. Overall it feels like it could have been a much better film and I wish I could have watched that one instead.
