Joker (2019)
Instant Classic!
All it takes is one bad day to reduce the sanest man alive to lunacy. That's how far the world is from where I am. Just one bad day.
The way Joaquin Phoenix handles Arthur Fleck from being oppressed to a lunatic, giving that amount of detail and depth to every subtle development of the character and let it thrive throughout the movie is just phenomenal to watch. Todd Phillips's JOKER is an instant classic.
The Haunting of Hill House (2018)
A Treat for Horror Fans!
I loved watching the tv series, it never stopped being interesting and fascinated me with a tremendous amount of detail and characterization. Haunted houses are the most common thing in the horror genre and it's always the same thing, new family shifts in, someone gets possessed, the youngest child is evil yadda yadda yadda. This is where Mike Flanagan thought a bit differently and he made a Masterpiece.
I was captivated by the presentation of the events as the series jumps back and forth the time and the transition is impeccable.
A lot of things happen in one frame and you need to be very attentive to get the best of it.
Another thing is that instead of throwing jump scares now and then, the show held back and invested a lot of time in building the perfect moment to hit you with the scariest of scares and I nearly jumped every time.
If you intend to watch this show and you should, I want to tell you this; Get ready for the best horror experience ever.
Johnny English Strikes Again (2018)
BEANISH ENGLISH!!
Once again the world breaks into chaos and Johnny English is summoned as the last hope. He must investigate a series of cyber attacks in London with his old sidekick, Bough.
Johnny English Strikes Again is as hilarious as it's prequels and Rowan Atkinson flaunts his Beanish appeal throughout the film. All you have to do is sit and relax and enjoy. The disco dance scene and the virtual reality scene are totally Bean. I had a good laugh.
Mission: Impossible - Fallout (2018)
THE NEW TOM CRUISE MOVIE.
In 2015, I watched MI Rogue Nation and saw Tom Cruise clinging of an Air Bus 5000 feet high. I thought, how is any movie going to match this stunt? Three years later, the same Tom Cruise did a HALO jump from an altitude of 25,000 feet. Now I'm thinking, HOW IS ANY MOVIE GOING TO MATCH THIS STUNT?!
I mean you can't just do things like this at the age of 56.
Mission Impossible Fallout is the best mission movie yet. It's the coordination of the stunts that amazed me the most. The opening scene and the events until the first stunt scene gave an excellent boost for the film. The story takes off rapidly and keeps jumping from one action scene to the next.
Every bit of action gives you a sense of enthusiasm. You can actually feel it's environment. The cinematography and editing stand out. And this time, the music really heightens the thrill.
Tom Cruise's Ethan Hunt is finally fully unleashed. Every mission movie is about Ethan doing the extreme but this time it's more like exploring what's beyond the extreme. The way Tom handles every scene is a spectacle. Putting your body on the line to give the audience the best cinematic experience, how many actors do that these days?
Henry Cavill without the cape is a perfect fit for the film.
Also, it was good to have Rebecca Fergusson back with the classic mission cast. Vanessa Kirby impresses as the "White Widow".
Helicopter sequence, Paris motorcycle chase, London rooftop chase, HALO jump, bathroom fight, I love everything about Fallout. Again, all the stunts are practically done.
Abrahaminte Santhathikal (2018)
Best Mammootty Movie in Recent Times.
The film lives up-to expectations. When Shaji Padoor's excellent direction met Haneef Adeni's impressive writing, it gave away to a magnificent return of Megastar Mammootty to Malayalam cinema.
The neatly paced thriller flick also reward the audience with good story. Certain portions were dramatic and lacked clarity. However, the massive screen presence of Mammootty make the negatives shoo away.
AS is not one of the best Malayalam thriller movies but the director's unique approach and stylish presentation deserves a one time watch.
Black Mirror (2011)
Black Mirror-ed
4 Seasons. 19 different sessions of mental trauma.
Black Mirror is 10 times terrifying than the best horror movie ever. It is disturbing to even think about the scenarios presented in each episode. The TV series themes the fatal attraction between human and technology. Black Mirror stories happen in a dystopian society which is soon going to be a reality for many of us. The show instills fear about the future we're moving into. As the makers expressed, this show is certainly not for the faint-hearted.
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018)
FALLEN KINGDOM
A million years ago, Dinosaurs faced extinction and nobody was there for them. Jurassic Park gave them a second chance. Three years after it's shut down, a new team is recruited to rescue the remaining species in the Isla Nubler island. And this time these creatures find their savior in human greed.
The opening scene itself gave a lot of nostalgic vibes. Jurassic World 2 is contained with a lot from Jurassic Park trilogy. It's impossible for a fan to miss those. There are many moments that extensively feel like throwbacks from Jurassic Park movies.
Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard again proved to be a fantastic cast.
But for a sequel, you expect something larger. Fallen Kingdom's huge canvas became narrow as the story carried on. This time you're not getting a mega dino adventure but the movie is as thrilling as it's precursors.
Maybe because I grew up watching practical dinosaurs, I find some of the CGI shots very sluggish and weird. Making a creature with the use of computer is a mammoth task and they still haven't found the proper formula. The effects of raptor are terrifically puppeteer-ed. The volcanic eruption is brilliantly choreographed.
The narrative was very much drawn to the use of music. The climax portion has some intense rhythms to up the tension.
The thing is they can make ten other Jurassic movies about dinosaurs running unleashed and I'll happily sit and watch all of them. I love Dinosaurs.
Ready Player One (2018)
The COOLEST Movie from The GREATEST Director.
Ready Player One is the Mecca of Visual Effects. If you're a fan of pop culture, this is IT, this is where you get your ultimate fangasm.
Steven Spielberg, the man has nothing more to prove and the iconic aura of his craftsmanship etched in the world of cinema is nothing short of legendary.
RPO is his extreme attempt in blending reality and animation with some of the greatest pop culture references. The film happens majorly in Oasis, a virtual world created by James Halliday where possibilities are limitless.
The action choreography and CG shots are poetry in motion!!
There is the real world and there is the virtual world. So the wisdom of the film exists in the merge of these two realities which gives you a spellbinding vicinity.
My excitement won't stop talking. The Shining sisters scene is my favorite. The DeLorean appeared on the screen and the inner me cried, 'Back to the future!!!.'
Same went for almost all the 80s references shown in the movie.
Akira Anime, Freddy Krueger, Star Trek (though I'm not a fan, I noticed it without hesitation), T-Rex, James Cameron's Alien, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, The Breakfast Club, Star Wars reference, Cocktail reference, Mission: Impossible mask off scene, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Godzilla, Terminator 2, Superman...Chucky...
there are more because the movie is literally built on the artifacts of these classics.
Tye Sheridan is brilliant, Olivia Cooke is cute and I loved the Simon Pegg's cameo. So this is a movie for Me and you if you're a geek.
A Quiet Place (2018)
GENRE BENDING MASTERPIECE!!
Mute mode is the new horror, proves John Krasinski. 'A Quiet Place' is the most gratifying horror experience I've ever had. It's terrifying from the word go. The creature in the movie is exceptionally CGIed. I loved watching it. Initially you may think it's an Alien movie inspired creature, but it felt way distant than a Xenomorph.
The duration of the film is 95 minutes.
The premise is a family trying to survive three alien things. Your advantage is your disadvantage. They're blind but brilliant listeners. They have ears like fish gills built all over their head. The Abbott family is in an enclosed apocalyptic environment and the chances of being alive is solely based on their silence. Everything felt so originally composed.
The film is amazingly paced for a thriller plot. The super brilliant usage of sound aroused my tension and literally made me freeze a couple of times. The sounds effects fueled the scares.
We've all been to horror movies and what we usually do is that we try to outsmart the director. We loose focus on it's details trying to predict the place from which the ghost pops out.
But A Quiet Place is where these predictions bite the dust.
Lastly and most importantly, without the extraordinary performance of Emily Blunt this movie wouldn't have been 'this movie'. She was terrific and backed Krasinski in solid manner.
The Mother giving birth to her child scene is truly one of the most intense and brilliantly executed scenes ever in a horror movie. With his artistry, John Krasinski has upped the ante for future film makers.
Annihilation (2018)
Alex Garland is a Magician!
Annihilation is a perfectly engineered visual poetry that blend science and wild imaginations. Alex Garland is the answer to making modern sci-fi movies more modern. The inside of the movie is like living a dream within a nightmare. Natalie Portman as usual delivers an amazing performance. The technical standard is well kept with spellbinding light effects, sound and cinematography. It's confusing as you go deep and the mystery that surrounds the narrative is what that gives you a rich and enthralling cinematic experience.
Jab Harry Met Sejal (2017)
SRK & Anushka's Charming Chemistry
Back in his strong suit, Shah Rukh Khan once again flavors Romance genre with his charming lover boy persona and outlandish wits as Imtiaz Ali beams a fresh emoting love story, which gave me A) Complete Satisfaction B) The SRK I was waiting to see. YES!! Jab Harry Met Sejal, a name that reminds you of 'When Harry Met Sally' - the best rated Rom-com of all time, is no less than a binding funny romance between two nomads. Harry (SRK) is introduced through Safar song and Sejal (Anushka) comes seeking the help of Harry for finding her lost engagement ring. I was enjoying the acting that kept me interested in the characters. Sublime performance of SRK & Anushka Sharma was equally good. The first half rewarded more quirky stuff and the second shaped into an emotional one. And this is an Imtiaz Ali film, and not a Karan Johar one. You don't expect SRK to have a heart condition or Anushka to have cancer or two lovers spreading deshbakthi all over Europe. That's why I said, JHMS is an out of the box flick. And of-course, romance cannot be given a new definition other than a man and woman falling in love. Even with certain constraints, Imtiaz Ali did a decent job. The songs had fantastic beats. I had tremendous entertainment.
Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017)
Blockbuster Superhero Watch
🗣️Me: Woh, Marvel just gave us another great movie. Also Me: That's not surprising! That's normal. 🕺Remember your childhood when you watched Tobey Maguire's Spiderman and went berserk? I do. That was an ecstasy for me. No matter which actor puts on the red tights and swings over the skyscrapers of America, it's Spider Man and as the first super hero I loved, I always awe watching him. Any him.. Amazing, Spectacular.. Ultimate.. 🕷️Tom Holland delivered a spectacular personification of the web slinging friendly neighbourhood hero. He is sharp minded, curious, caring, shy...summing the obvious Peter Parker. You could relate him to the raw Peter Parkerness of the anime "Ultimate Spider Man." 🌟RDJ, Chris Evans and surprisingly Gwyneth Paltrow did cameos. Marisa Tomei is one of the best castings of MARVEL ever. CGI Choreography was excellent. The scores were great. Also, let's take a moment to appreciate MARVEL for handing a franchise opening to an inexperienced director. Jon Watts did a neat job. 💬Still why is it fresh? This is the first #SpiderMan who chased the villain on foot because there were no buildings to swing. 😂 #Homecoming is just what a Marvel Fan ordered. I rate 4/5.
Kong: Skull Island (2017)
Jurassic Park #3?
Kong: Skull Island -
◘With abysmal amount of visual effects and CGI, Kong delivered an A-One cinematic experience. Though the movie was equipped with an outstanding line up of actors, the abundant action and vehemence that followed the monster formulaic plot created chaos in individual performances. The Skull Island expedition crew included a group of militants lead by Preston Packard(Samuel L Jackson), some geologists who look nothing like geologists, the 'experienced' James Conrad(Tom Hiddleston) recruited by Bill Randa (John Goodman) and a beautiful anti-war photographer Mason Weaver (Brie Larson). They all shared a common trait - idiocy !
◘Half of their team bit the dust combating Kong, a quarter of the rest were eaten by "Skull crawlers' (it's a really cool name) and still Sam Jackson wants to hunt the mighty King. In short the cast reflected a bunch of morons mimicking each other at the time of a Jurassic Park situation. BTW, this felt like a Jurassic Park 3 rip off!
◘3D was spectacular. Monsters had a decent amount of screen time (unlike Godzilla). The sound effects were good.. So, where technicality prevailed, cliché deep rooted and story sucked. Still a guaranteed entertainment and a fast paced movie is assured. I rate [3/5].
