Glossary of Broken Dreams (2018)
Good intentions
I love JG's take on making movies. Learned about him through his film 'Traceroute' -- and I'm glad he is at it again. I enjoyed this one even more, simply because it's uncompromising AF. A quote by Nietzsche comes to mind: "The man of knowledge must be able not only to love his enemies but also to hate his friends."
The film's tag line says it all. It is a film about (good) intentions, about how to make the world a better place. Will we succeed? Maybe not. Trying is all that counts.
Terms and Conditions May Apply (2013)
Brilliant documentary about internet site terms and policies
I think that we should be entitled to privacy and are entitled to have our rights without having fear for what we post on the internet. In fact most of the data that we type in on the internet can be constantly be misused, and that our right to freedom is in jeopardy. There should be some new laws to protect citizens of not being reprimanded of what they post on the internet. This is a well-crafted documentary that raises awareness of what is really going on when you click the "I Agree" options of the 'Terms and Conditions' of various websites.
The Corporation (2003)
Knowledge is power
Thorough and scathing look into the social, environmental and economic destruction the current corporate system is sowing. Not entirely optimistic, it shows many viewpoints from Capitalist chiefs, Greening CEOs and the usual swag of the likes of Chomsky, Moore and Klein. It covers a lot and is quite in-depth. I never knew Basmati rice had been saved from corporate ownership. There is much to glean from this, even if you are already aware of the current economic imbalances we face. A must watch.
Traceroute (2016)
A maverick essay
Traceroute is an autobiographical film. You might even call it a cinematic essay. Johannes talks about his own past and future, but also the past and future of a class that is now dominating the globe: the nerds. There are many films for (and about) nerds out there, but this one is not about Superman and Star Wars and Donkey Kong, but science, politics, even sex. It is wonderful to see how candid the film approaches the subject matter. Being a nerd means: creativity, visions, openness to experimentation, subversion - and not only regarding program code and video games, but regarding society, values and ideologies.
Flight of the Navigator (1986)
Classic, great for re-watching
Always loved this Disney flick, great effects and adventurous plot that is kinda 'Back to the Future' mixed with 'Explorers' purely for kids with an extraterrestrial twist. The effects were fantastic for the time and it was the first film to use environment mapping, the CG was some of the first used in motion pictures!
