Upstream Color (2013)
Very Well Made, But Overall Boring
This is a well directed, written, acted, edited, shot film and the music is fantastic. However, I found myself frustrated with the pacing of the film. I wasn't expecting a fast pace but the film drags so much and that made me keep looking at how much time was left. The story to a great film is there but there are whole sequences that are really uninteresting to watch between the interesting bits.
I Am Not Okay with This (2020)
Stan Barber Deserves A Better Show
Hoo boy, this show annoys me. It had so much potential but it WASTED IT! Let's start at the beginning
Episodes 1-3 are very boring and repetitive and almost stopped me from finishing the show. I feel like they could've been cut down into 1 or 2 episodes and accomplish just as much. And for a show that's only 7(!) episodes long, you don't have time to waste repeating yourself. They'd just have Sydney have a bad day, have her powers blow up, and then repeat.
Also for the first 4(Out of 7 episodes remember) Syd is just an absolute rude to the people who try to be nice to her (except Dina). For example, in the bowling alley scene, she makes light (and/or fun) of Stan's abusive relationship with his dad (also doesn't help that Stan seems a more interesting character than her)
Now, I believe the show gets tremendously better from episodes 4-6. Syd gets to be more than just angry sad girl and gets to interact with Dina, Stan and her family in better ways and the story trajectory is looking very interesting.
But they couldn't stick the landing. And up until a point, I was loving the final episode. The characters are gelling together perfectly and the story's climax is *chef's kiss* Brad's death is such an interesting way to take the story but the writer's had to go and ruin it with the most lazy and CLICHE cliffhanger!
I would've been perfectly fine if the show had just ended right there with Brad's death. However the writer's had to end it with that cheesy ass line "Let's begin'' (It reminded me of S7 Game of Thrones writing it was that bad) It ends the story abruptly and leaves me so unsatisfied.
Now, overall I think this show is a solid 6/10 and I will definitely tune in to season 2 but goddamn I am so annoyed right now
Gisaengchung (2019)
Comedy, Thriller, Top Notch Horror
Parasite is a film that leaves one immediately wanting to reevaluate what they just saw. Expertly directed, written, edited, acted, and shot, Parasite is a unique and terrifying movie experience best viewed without any warning
Carmen Sandiego (2019)
A Smart and Beautiful Reboot
I came into Carmen Sandeigo expecting little but was blown away with it's animation. As the series progresses, it's clear that the aesthetics of the show aren't it's only ace in the scarlet sleeve. With a compelling narrative and interesting characters, Carmen Sandeigo elevates itself above regular animated fare. The show's sharp humour and sharper writing makes it a series perfect for bingeing.
Family Guy: Bri-Da (2019)
Competent, but Boring
This episode has the usual Family Guy formula: Start episode with a plot that ends up contributing nothing and abandoned by minute 8 and then start the real episode with a boring mess of cutaways and dad jokes. This episode is very derivative of last season's "No Giggity, No Doubt" with Brian filling in the role of obnoxious dad stereotypes. However, this episode is not as insufferable as that episode. It also seems, as with last week's premiere, that Family Guy has no idea how to write a decent ending opting instead to just end episodes randomly. What the hell was that ending?!?!
Family Guy: Yacht Rocky (2019)
Funny Start Declines Into Messy, Painful Slog
My expectations for the show have never been high but the first 8 minutes was decently funny. As soon as the yacht plot begins, there is a tangible decline of quality. Honestly with as much as the family contributes to the epsiode, they shouldn't have been in it. Louise contributes nothing, Chris and Stewie have a weird dynamic that comes out of left field, Brian literally has two lines of dialogue the entire episode and Meg's subplot is just painful to watch on top of being needlessly disgusting. Even though this is supposed to be a "Peter and The Gang" story, Joe, Cleveland, and Quagmire have and do nothing of consequence. This episode feels like an excuse to make outdated jokes about singers Seth McFarland liked as a kid. Not the worst episode but very boring despite what the outline of the plot would suggest
Big Little Lies: Tell-Tale Hearts (2019)
A Greatly Written Episode That Feels Like Classic Big Little Lies
While I was slightly disappointed with the season premiere, this episode kickstarts the season into high gear. The cast is great as always and the addition of Crystal Fox's subtly great performance is yet another great addition to the series. Laura Dern steals the episode with her awesome performance as Renata. The plots are moving forward at a nice pace. Can't wait to see how the events of this episode reverberate into later episodes.
Big Little Lies: What Have They Done? (2019)
A Little Off, but Overall a Good Episode
While it is enjoyable catching up with all the characters, and meeting new players, the episode lacks the immediacy that captured my attention in the pilot. Though greatly directed, acted, and shot, the episode feels a little off. While all the jokes made me laugh, the abundance of them feels out of place. I am certainly interested in how the season will progress but right now I am not really as invested as I was in season one.
Wine Country (2019)
A Fine Comedy with a Stellar Cast
A pleasant viewing experience that had me chuckling often and laughing at other times. A great cast and a fine script.
Family Guy: Adam West High (2019)
A Decent Episode, which automatically makes it the season's best
The episode had a decently funny 1st act but after that it became incredibly boring. The last scene with Adam definitely was the best moment of the episode and was really emotional.
Family Guy: Island Adventure (2019)
It was painful to get through
This episode is fine. It's so painfully average that it was tough to get through. I laughed twice, so at least that's something. Why do I watch this show anymore
Family Guy: No Giggity, No Doubt (2019)
Insufferable and Cringe-inducing
Even in its worse episodes, I have never seen watching a Family Guy episode as a chore. This episodes plot is so obvious from just reading a description of it you can tell where they'll go in the episode. Painfully boring and unfunny to the max
Family Guy: You Can't Handle the Booth (2019)
Terrible episode, except for one thing
Having Sarah Paulson scream," QUIET, MY PARTS ON!" was the only laugh that this terrible episode elicited from me
Love, Death & Robots: Zima Blue (2019)
Definitely my favorite out of the bunch
Made me really think and appreciate the beauty of a simple task done right.
Ballmastrz 9009 (2018)
Adult Swim's Most Promising New Show of 2018
Ballmastrz 9009 is yet another extremely creative show from Adult Swim. Christy Karacas has outdone himself with Ballmastrz for I considered it to be a vast improvement of his previous work SuperJail!. While the art style of SuperJail! made the show rather a visual assault, the same style works wonders for the world of Ballmastrz. It conveys the frantic energy of the post-apocalyptic world and the zanyness of its cast. However, this show does need more time to flesh out and endear us to its characters, the character of Crayzar being the stand out of this season. I would highly recommend people to watch Ballmastrz. I also believe that, given proper time, Ballmastrz will become something great.
