Casper's Scare School (2006 TV Movie)
3/10
It's got Hogwarts written all over it
4 February 2010
The show is somewhat similar to JK Rowling's books. Let's make a comparison:

There are three main protagonists in "Casper's Scare School" : 2 boys and 1 girl. There are three main protagonists in the Harry Potter books : 2 boys and 1 girl.

The students in "Casper's Scare School" go to a strange school with gargoyles, awkward teachers and so forth. The students in in the Harry Potter books go to a strange school with gargoyles, awkward teachers and... you get the picture.

The main character in "Casper's Scare School" is kind, friendly, with a family that doesn't understand him and he's dead. The main character in the Harry Potter books is kind, friendly, with a family that doesn't understand him and he's alive (for now).

Ra is Casper's best friend (besides Jimmy), always in his shadow, not as interesting as he is and lazy about schoolwork. Ron is Harry's best friend, always in his shadow, not as interesting as he is and lazy about schoolwork.

Mantha is also Casper's friend. She is very calm...zombie, who is tight with her friends, just la Hermione is. Except the zombie part.

Thatch and Draco are the antagonists playing the part of the school bullies. Both are cruel, selfish and whatever you can think of.

Well, that's really original. What will they think of next? Two midgets who have a ring and must toss into the Eternal Soup of Fire, being guided by a bald eagle who yells 'My precious'?

At least the design and mimics of the characters are pretty good. The voices are not bad, especially Casper's. Enjoy watching it!

David Copperfield (2000 TV Movie)
5/10
Haven't we seen the same thing a year before this ?
1 February 2006
Directed with skills, excellent props but it's a shabby look-alike of, well... the 'David Copperfield' produced in 1999. Even the Emmy Awards says it so: 1 nomination for this film comparing to the '99 movie with 1 award and 3 nominations. Now let's talk about the cast: Sally Field played brilliantly & Michael Richards did his part in great style unlike the young Max Dolbey. Absolutely no feeling in role. Like going to the market and to buy tomatoes. My guess is that the '99 movie inspired someone and he wanted to do the same thing again hoping for the same success. Their greatest mistake is that an American thought that he could do a picture after an English book with no British help because everything in it is English, a different culture from the American one. To understand Charles Dickens and create a masterpiece after his works you must be at least partially British. In the 1999 'David Copperfield' Simon Curtis had the help of some great actors: Maggie Smith for Aunt Betsey Trotwood, Bob Hoskins for Mr. Wilkins Micawber and Ian McKellen for Mr. Creakle. This motion picture is good, nevertheless it is inferior to its British 'sister'. Watch it, but you won't be transposed in to the Dickens universe.
