The Children Act (2017)
Emma Thompson
I am a huge Emma Thompson fan, and I think this was her most stunning performances I have ever seen. The immediate cast is excellent, but the nuanced and outpouring of emotion of Emma Thompson's as high level Family Court Judge is every reason to watch this interesting movie. Sometimes you find an absolute gold in a movie that may not be a perfect vehicle to cover all the parallel plot lines within the original book or as depicted in the movie. However, the central storyline is compelling and is very worthy of your time. You will find yourself with many questions to ponder long after the credits roll.
Togo (2019)
Watch this amazingly true story!! You will be drawn into the deeply affecting story of an amazing and exceptional smart sled dog and his daring and very experienced musher.
This movie hits so many notes throughout the film, very funny when Togo was a puppy and his intent desire to become a part of his owners dog sled team. The story is very interesting and amusing as Togo works his way up the sled dog team to leader. Then, the film gets into the heart of the story---the desperate race undertake by multiple sled dog teams to attempt to get a vaccine to Nome, AK to attempt to save children and indeed all of the residents of that town from a deadly diphtheria outbreak. Togo was a born leader---even with all initial evidence to the contrary. Togo's master was an exceptional musher. All this lends itself to an exciting, treacherous journey which puts all dogs and musters lives at risk.
Chemical Hearts (2020)
Unexpected Gem
Lili Reinhart is simply amazing in her role---spanning an incredibly wide and erratic range of emotions throughout this wrenching drama. A very interesting and challenging role has been chiseled out for Reinhart as Grace Town, and she handles it with a seemingly flawless ease, realism and depth.
The movie unfolds with Grace's organic personal revelations to Adam Abrams character, Henry Page. Each of her personal disclosures to Henry are earned as their relationship becomes deeper and Grace's trust with Henry trust grows. During their early meeting, Henry's interactions with Grace show great care and concern as he repeatedly avoids pressuring her for information by sidestepping some very specific minefields of her life that he has uncovered through researching her online.
I have not seen such a good dramatic film about high school students in quite some time.
Lincoln: Divided We Stand (2021)
This is Excellent.
I really like this shows goal of trying to encompass both Lincoln, the man and his personal history and his strengths and faults---and how he starts as a child in poverty and moves with halting progress towards the Presidency. I saw the first episode and now I would like to know if I can find somewhere to just stream all the episodes.....or do I have to wait? :(
