Behind Her Eyes (2021)
You can't do that.
Yes, SPOILERS.
I only stuck with this middling, fairly tedious, psychological thriller for the promise of a supposedly mind-blowing twist at the end that has been ballyhooed by a number of IMDb reviewers.
Well, I suppose it's fine, if you don't have any problem with a series seemingly set in the real world halfway through suddenly introducing the idea of ASTRAL PROJECTION. All of a sudden characters' "souls" are floating around like little Tinkerbells.
Maybe the standards for storytelling have sunk so low that nobody bats an eye when an outlandish element like that is, out-of-the-blue, inserted into a reality-based scenario. My mind was blown, I suppose, but only by how ridiculous it is. And it only gets more ludicrous from there.
The Creep Behind the Camera (2014)
Crass Exploitation - and I don't mean the original
This shrill, low-budget recreation of the making of The Creeping Terror isn't as bad as the movie it's about, but it's not that much better. At least they didn't lose the soundtrack, but there's no question that The Creeping Terror isn't more fun to watch.
The acting here is generally bad, the dialogue filled with inexplicable pauses, the lead creepy but charmless.
It is interspersed with talking heads recounting stories of the actual making, and they're interesting. This should have been a straight documentary.
Hostel (2005)
Underrated
The excess of negative reviews here is, in this case, a reflection of how well this movie works. It's one of the few recent American movies that qualifies as real horror. The worst possibility comes to fruition, every prejudice and suspicion manifesting as far worse than the protagonists could imagine. This is what horror does best - bring one's darkest fears to life.
Kingsman: The Golden Circle (2017)
Intentionally Awful?
Matthew Vaughn and Jane Goldman are so smart and talented that I can only assume they set out to make this as ridiculously bad as they could to see if audiences would still "like" it. Not a single funny moment and all the action takes place inside a computer.
Anon (2018)
Poor Clive Owen
Having recently rewatched the amazing Children of Men, I wondered what had happened to the talented and charming star. Unfortunately, one answer is this flat and unconvincing made on-the cheap science fiction film. It's clever enough, as to be expected from Andrew Niccol - but he too is a long way from The Truman Show and Gattaca.
