The Menu (2022)

Looked so good but just didn't live up to the hype

This is one of those films with a plot that's right up my street. However, it didn't turn out to be nearly as good as expected especially given all the good reviews it's been getting. It just didn't make any sense at all. The beginning was fine and looked like it would build into something interesting but as the movie progressed it just became ridiculous. The number of guests in that room could've overpowered the chef, as he even suggests, but barely anyone does anything to actually try to save themselves. All the staff are brainwashed to die for him but there's no real reasoning for this other than what a good chef he is. Even at the end, no one tries to escape, they just sit there and accept their fate without so much as a movement. Some survival instinct would've made it a much better movie.

The Good Witch of Christmas (2022)

Not a good film at all

I don't know why I thought this would be a fun family Christmas movie. The whole premise is extremely poor and you're left wondering what the point of the film is and when something interesting is going to happen. The kids do fine in their roles but the adult characters are extremely false and exaggerated. I'm not even sure why the 'Good Witch' is in the film title when there are no witches in the film. I presume it's actually referring to the elf, who I guess is more witch-like than elf-like. The santa character is also very odd and not festive at all, moaning about how he can't rely on others. Don't waste your time with this one.

Same Time, Next Christmas (2019 TV Movie)

It's a sweet film but...

Olivia is a great girl and Jeff has already broken her heart twice. She finds someone else who is successful and actually seems like a pretty great guy. He brings thoughtful presents for all her family and gets stuck in with the activities even though it's not really his thing. He's by no means a bad guy or the typical corparate city guy these sorts of films usually have. I felt really bad for him when Olivia changed her mind about marrying him at the last possible moment. He didn't deserve that. The film has the typical predictable format but I really don't think it worked this time. Also, this is supposed to be a Christmas movie but there's only a few scenes where it seems like Christmas at all.

Hocus Pocus 2 (2022)

The witches are back!

There's been a lot of sequels and remakes out recently and a lot have been a let down but not this one. It's true to the original, bringing nostalgia whilst also being fresh and new. There's some really funny scenes and plenty of action along the way. It's just what I'd hoped for and will be one to rewatch on Halloweens to come. It was also good to see the origin story of the witches and it was a nice contrast to see Salem back in the 1600s against the modern world they were now experiencing. The lotions scene in the store was particularly funny and we loved seeing the robot hoovers especially when they hoovered up the salt to free the witches. We get a quite sentimental ending, which I think is fitting after 29 years and leaves you feeling sympathetic to the witches wanting their sisters more than anything else.

Fresh and original

It's great to see a horror/thriller that's a bit different to the usual. The whole film keeps you gripped and rooting for the women to escape. Highly recommend this film if you're looking for something original.

This was one of my favourite films as a child. I watched it again and again on video and even now as an adult it never gets old. The story is just perfect and has me in tears every time. It's about a girl who's mum dies in a car crash so she must go to live with her dad. She's in a strange place with strange people and this story is just as much about her relationship with her dad as it is about the geese. The music is incredibly moving and the shots of them all flying south are just stunning.

Not funny, just nasty

Very boring, just making fun of every class of people he possibly can as he can't actually come up with any properly funny jokes. Pathetic. He says it's career ending and it really should be. There's no place for this rubbish.

OK if you're bored and want to pass some time

It wasn't an awful movie but it just wasn't believable. The monster just looked like a man in a mask and cloak. They quickly realise it doesn't like light so they could've just kept the torch on and walked out the tunnel. Also, the deranged man at the start of the movie didn't actually add anything other than ensure they didn't have their phones.

I took my kids to see this at the cinema, having never seen the original. The animation quality was poor especially considering it was shown in the cinema. The language they used to tell the story went straight over my kids' heads so it was difficult for them to follow and most of the characters lacked personality. We were all utterly bored and glad when it was over.
