Ging chaat goo si III: Chiu kup ging chaat (1992)
Michelle Yeoh a great addition to the Police Story franchise
Great third entry in the Police Story franchise, which however feels quite different in tone to the previous 2.
Stanley Tong the director introduced the use of storyboards for this movie and indeed the whole affair seems more professional and serious.
The tone is also more serious, gone is the "Police Story theme song" and the goofy stunts.
There's a lot more gunplay and explosions, but also great set pieces and fighting choreography throughout.
I love what Michelle Yeoh's character brings to the table and we see how communist China police and Hong Kong police collaborate despite differences. And apparently Ms Yeoh performed all her stunts, some of which went painfully wrong and we can see that in the end-movie outtakes.
The addition of fully Synchronised sound (rather than dubs), which this is the first HK action movie to employ, makes a big difference and again, makes the movie feel more "serious".
Do You Remember Laurie Zimmer? (2003)
Interesting but not essential viewing
Interesting documentary about a French filmmaker looking for Laurie Zimmer.
Some nice shots of Los Angeles in the seventies and early noughties.
La casa de papel (2017)
Complete Waste Of Time
The premise had lots of potential. A well planned, carefully thought out heist the likes of which Spain (and possibly any other country) has ever seen.
Unfortunately it all starts to fall apart when they carry out the plan. Highly unprofessional criminals, stupid hostages, and an amount of drama that would rival any South American TeleNovela.
The Hitcher (1986)
I feel like I'm missing something...
I don't normally add comments to my score, but I feel that I have to somehow counterbalance the overwhelming positive reviews that I see this movie is getting, mainly from users (as opposed to critics).
It starts off great, with great psychological thriller and horror tones, but falls so quickly into hyper- unrealistic action, laughable even for the standards of the time.
The only redeeming qualities are the excellent performances by the actors, but it's all let down by nonsensical script and gratuitous action scenes, with zero plot twists, something that is almost impossible to achieve.
