Tales from the Loop (2020)
Wonderful to me
I love the picture and the atmosphere of this show so much that the plot probably doesn't matter that much to me, especially the plot is good to me, too. I thought I wasn't able to enjoy such a slow paced show but I was wrong. The story line is not particularly wondeful to me, but still some small surprises make me enjoy it. And i love the whole feeling of this show. I was drawn to it from the first episode and it's still my favorite episode. Although some episodes I don't really like such as episode 3 and 5 (I just don't resonate with the characters), episode 2 i would say very illogical. What gives Jacob a good future is his brain, not just his grandpa. What Danny did cannot make him work in the loop if he cannot have that knowledge. Jacob basically had no reason to hope to go back to his old self. The only thing that really changes is their body. Jacob can be his old self as long as he wants to. I know I shouldn't be picky about this if i can just enjoy it but this is too illogical for me to ignore.
All in all, it's a sweet surprise that enchanted me:
Update after I finished all the 8 episodes:
Yes I definitely rate it higher than I did before. So many plots are quite cliche to me and I knkw it, but still, the way the story is told, the atmosphere, the feeling, the picture, everything, they just touch me right at the spot. I cried so hard over the last episode ever since Jakob died. When I thought I was over it and I could stop crying, in 3 minutes there is a new thing that made me cry even harder. Almost every episode has a small part that touches me. The little boy left alone at the island, the poor robot, the new robot (the second one), the way Gaddis looked at the photo and when he found in a parallel world the man is his lover. Russ' cry at night alone...
Another thing I particularly like about this series is that it doesn't show the stereotype I feel in so many shows. I'm glad in episode 2 it's two boys who transposed and envied each other's life, not two girls (I'm so tired of every so called female work indicating it's "women's" nature of wanting to be someone else and to envy their friends). I'm glad in episode 3 what the Asian girl wants is not so different from what every individual might want in every culture... I know the best result is one day we do not need to intentionally use a type of people to reprensent something, but at least for now, after I've seen so many stereotyped ways of potraying people, intentionally or not intentionally, I'm glad this show chooses these people to reprensent something that is common in all individuals.
Superman: Red Son (2020)
So disgusted by the gender stereotype
Yeah, I know it's trying to show some kind of "feminism ", but what a disgusting gender stereotype it is! Yes, men are ambitious, decisive and more inclined to sacrifice and women are soft, loving, always saving. Yes, men are dark and brutal, women are all love and peace. I don't even know if men should be more offended or women should be. Besides, what the hell does Lois Lane mean when she says it doesn't matter for a man to be short or tall thin or fat bald or handsome? Are you serious? Appearance matters to men AND women. This is not true and saying things like this doesn't help anything. Sure you can say in some narrow minded people's eyes they care women's appearance more than men's but it's not the norm, it's not so exaggerated and I hate it when people intentionally exaggerate the differences and potray women as victims of all social norms when it's not true at all.
I like the Soviet Superman notion and some history and ideology embodied by superman is interesting. I could have given it 6 if I'm not so disgusted by the gender stereotypes in it.
Update after finishing all of it:
I would give it 4 stars without the ending. The ending is so childish that I couldn't even belive it's true. I THOUGHT it's a movie that shows how imperfect both ideals are for human beings. Even if you want to say the way of America is better than the way of Soviet, which I don't object, please don't show the American way as the light of human beings. I can't believe this ending. Even at the last moment I thought there was going to be some irony. The ending is just ridiculous.
Why Women Kill (2019)
Absolutely love Simone's story line
I'll give 8 for Simone's story but the other two stories are so stupid. I also hate the lurking value beneath the stories. Can't really sympathize with the characters and actually dislike most of them. However I love Simone's story so much. Karl, Tommy and Simone are all perfectly charming and nice and the finale made me cry so hard for three of them, although I can't think of any better ending for them. It's beautiful.
Halt and Catch Fire (2014)
Good in the first season and ouch...
In the first season, I did compare it with Mad Men. Not saying it is as good as Mad Men (sorry no show can ever triumph Mad Men in my eyes, ever), but at least they are comparable. I think HCF is more dramatic, thus more entertaining, than Mad Men, although it's also less natural and deep because of this. All in all, I enjoy the first season a lot. However when I started the second season, this is completely no comparison anymore. HCF totally becomes an "all drama" show aiming only to entertain you but it's just so intentionally dramatic that all characters become unbelievable and childish. The plots become so funny and unreal that I can't even feel entertained but only annoyed and amused. I have to give up on half of season 2. I really think it would be better if this show just ends in season 1. That would be a solid story/
The Victoria's Secret Fashion Show (2018)
Can't feel the glamor anymore
You know something's wrong when even I can tell someone's really walking too casually. This is how I feel about victoria's secret fashion show 2018. It's such an awful disapointment. I had some expectations for it despite reports of its low watching rate and rumors of its poorer walkings and outfits. I generally do not have that high standards for models. I fell for VS in senior high when everyone's saying angels like Candice and Behati are not as good as the old ones such as Lima and Gisele and shows in 2012 are not so good as the old shows such as those of 2009. However, I love the shows of 2011 more than that of 2009. Although I can tell the difference of Gisele's walk and Candice's walk, I think Candice's is good enough to win my heart. I think it's more because of the requirement and the style of the show are more vibrant rather than high end so the angels are different. That's why I didn't take other people's comments of these new angels seriously. I think they just prefer the older and high end style rather than the vibrant ones. However, this show, is too casual even in my standard. I loved those angels before, for example Taylor, especially Taylor. She's the most beautiful angel in my view and I like her according to her photos and youtube videos. However, what is she doing on the stage? She's opening the show with "This is me" as the background music! I was hoping to be amazed and like "wow" when I saw her coming out, but no, she's walking as if she's just hanging with friends on the street. She even has some very casual gestures like nervously and happily covering her mouth or something like that. This never happens to Candice or Miranda, even though they may also be smiling and waving to the audience, their moves are delicated, mature and well designed. Their moves belong to the stage. All these new angels, on the other hand, are behaving as if they are making their own vlog on instagram. The only angel who's walking fine in my standard this year is Candice. Marthat and Elsa are also good but not very outstanding.
I don't know if this is VS' plan to change their style this way. It's understandable if they're trying to make their angels more like daily girls in life so they can have more interactions with their customers and fans. I can only say this is not what I want, and, according to what I hear about from people who also enjoyed their show in the past years, not what many fans want. I like angels like Candice, Lindsey, Doutzen and Miranda who walk not so "queen style" as Gisele did, but still I want VS fashion show to be a fashion show with glamor, not just a party with beautiful young girls making "dramatic" happy scenes.
