The Limping Man (1953)
The ending is not so bad
An enjoyable piece of film. Considering where the anticipated ending was going, the twist ending was a nice piece of work. Much of the mystery is left open for discussion. Why was the kindly stage door manager the killer? Was the Ex-husband disguising himself as the stage door manager all along and if so why didn't the ex-wife see through the disguise at the pub? Are rifles disguised as walking sticks common? Maybe the stage door manager was a professional hit man and it was pure coincidence that the victim knew the ex-husband? Perhaps there were two limping men, the stage door manager and the professional hit man. So the story has some holes in it, it was fun to watch and make fun of while watching.
Reaching for the Moon (1930)
With his Valet's help, Fairbanks seeks to score with a babe.
I didn't know they made movies about scoring back in the 30s. The Jeckel/Hyde effects of Edward Everett Horton's "spanish fly" brew are a hoot. I found this gem on a miss marked double feature Bing Crosy DVD at the dollar store. The DVD titled "Road to Hollywood"/"Sound of Laughter" did not contain the film "Sound of Laughter" but instead "Reaching for the Moon" This copy contained no opening or closing titles or credits, indeed the menu screen was just a still frame from the middle of the picture with the sole option of "Play". With "zip" for information, It took me some time just to Identify the title. There is a token appearance of Bing Crosby in the film to sing one song. Fairbanks, Horton and Bebe Daniels all sparkle in this Society film about a beautiful flirt and the wall-street tycoon she taunts.
King Kong (2005)
Oh Boy! am I disappointed.
This version of "King Kong" now has me remembering Dino De Lorentis's version with great fondness. I have Peter Jackson's "Kong" on DVD and "Godzilla" with Mathew Brodrick on DVD, with both of these to chose between, I will never view "King Kong" again. "Godzilla" will win hands down every time. This version is about an abusive relationship between a girl and a giant ape, but you don't really learn anything about abusive relationships because the story is too shallow and incomplete. "Boobies!" I think it's wrong for a movie to foreshadow events that it never delivers. It's not that I wanted "Boobies!" in this film, it's just odd that it didn't have any after the subject was brought up in the first act. Ann Darrow the lead part in this film has too much self respect to become a stripper and indeed there is nothing in the first hour of the film that would lead you to believe she would ever degrade herself for another man let alone an animal (Ape). There is never any sexual tension between Kong and his toy, female action figure, and as a fetish film this event is a big failure.
