Valentine's Day (2017)
Stunning Charly Nash an excellent entrance into the film industry
There's no doubt that there's a positive to this remake. An upgrade if you will, covering the themes of loneliness, heartbreak and grief.
Upcoming actress Charly Nash really does steal the film and makes the whole thing interesting from start to finish.
It's a sad story about a woman who recreates the same Valentine's Day every day. For us, the viewers we understand that this is routine, but for how long has she been doing this?
Nash swings it out of the park. No dialogue. Completely universal in this understood short film, for anyone who has ever felt heartbroken and lost someone romantically. Cinematography could have been better, only a few, but it's good.
Numbers (2022)
No bore and a lot of gore
Inspired by Saw and featuring Detective Hoffman himself (Costas Mandylor) Death Count has quite a stacked cast including Michael Madsen, Devanny Pinn and Robert LaSardo.
Death Count certainly isn't breaking any barriers in terms of originality with this idea of people kidnapped for their transgressions and made to repent through gory means.
It's torture porn at its finest and gore for the sake of gore with an added inclusion of tech and the Warden (Costas Mandylor) who is employed to run the game. Death Count weaves the story well as we find out the link between all the characters and nothing feels forced.
The film does kind of fly off the rails in the third act and becomes a little bit ridiculous but it's certainly never dull.
The Invention of Lying (2009)
This should be talked about more
Ricky Gervais' comedy is so sincere and fearless that I think it's way ahead of its time. This didn't do well in the cinemas but that's because it's so niche in its storytelling. There are a few places where it's silly and off putting but that's where it's also not taking itself seriously. Louie CK is fantastic in this too! Surprised about the missing goatie!
