The Fourth Kind (2009)
Scary Coincidence
This movie is extremely disturbing and the true story is even crazier. Whether you're new to the alien scene or are an experienced UFO hunter this film will keep you on the edge of your seat the entire time.
Now time for a story: My friend and I are lovers of the supernatural, the extra terrestrial, and all things horror. We decided, one night, to watch a new (at the time) movie, The Fourth Kind. We rented the DVD and neglected to watch it and, instead, played some videogames. It wasn't until very late that we finally decided to pop the disc in and see the film. We. Were. Terrified. We had studied the events before, and seeing them come to life on our TV really put it into perspective. In the film all abductions happen at a specific time, 3:33 in the morning, and some abductees, trying to block out the bad memories, would see barn owls in their dreams/memories to cope with the reality of seeing aliens. The movie ended, the credits rolled, and my friend and I were huddled together on my bed. We were tired, it was getting late, and I decided to look at my clock... 3:32 am... If that wasn't scary enough I had an odd collection of things on my desk. One part of that collection was, you guessed it, a fake barn owl used for scaring crows away.
We didn't sleep until sunrise and that owl has found its place in the attic where it can never scare me again.
Very scary and a moment we will never forget.
Backcountry (2014)
Perversion of a true story
IrishThe true story: a married couple enter the woods where the wife is attacked by a bear. The husband tries to fight the bear off, stabbing it ~10 times. He sustains heavy injuries, but his wife takes the brunt of the attack. He carries her to a small boat and gets them to safety, but it's sadly too late for his wife.
The movie: Dumbass boyfriend gets lost in the woods. A handsome Irishman threatens his masculinity so he acts like a jackass to his girlfriend, who calls him out on it. She goes on a rant about how much of a stupid loser he is and then he proposes to her. They are attacked by a bear and the man is killed while the woman does nothing. She runs away while her fiancée gets eaten. When she makes it back to safety the handsome Irish guy is there to comfort her.
A true story about a couple struggling to survive and a man trying to save his wife is turned into a movie about a dumb loser and his "bad ass" girlfriend. I wouldn't have been upset if it weren't for the movie being "based on a true story" while having nothing in common with the actual event other than having a guy and a girl in the woods
Extraordinary: The Stan Romanek Story (2013)
Disturbing for the wrong reason
I am a true believer. I am sure Sam and his family/friends are true believers. In fact, I am sure that something has happened to Sam and his family, but nothing nearly as significant as we are led to believe.
The documentary is about one of the most well documented alien encounters of all time, and it's indeed a good documentary until about halfway through. Regardless of the credibility of the photos/videos something weird was definitely happening, but it didn't have much to do with ET's.
The whole movie gives a certain "savior status" to Stan in a way that comes off unsettling. The government wanting him quiet to the point of sending black ops guys to silence him? Aliens personally calling him and referring to him as "important" and "Starseed"? His wife saying he has a special outlook on humanity and a message that needs to be spread? Less than halfway through and it's went from "scary events" to "Sam Romanek: Humanities Savior".
The most disturbing part, however, comes near the end. He is interviewed by a psychologist who helps him relive some of his trauma, a common practice for those with PTSD and other mental disorders. He talks about being surrounded by children pulling at his legs, how he doesn't want to leave them, and that they are very important to him. He even begins to cry. Sam Romanek has been imprisoned on charges of child pornography... It seems as though his breakdown was very real, but it had nothing to do with an abduction. Earlier in the film he mentions, awkwardly, that he ran down stairs with his camera towards (what he thought) was his naked step-son. He said, in a defensive tone, that he was going to use it as a joke black-mail to embarrass his kid, but the whole scene comes off as strange.
He is very disturbed, that's clear from the beginning, but knowing the truth about him takes this documentary down a much darker path.
