The Prestige (2006)
Surprising and thought-provoking
It's a long time since I saw a film where I was so hooked on the story. The Prestige has a plot so full of twists and turns it merits several viewings - and even then there will be arguments over who did what - but I can honestly say that it is so engrossing that I enjoyed every minute of it again and again. What I really admire is the way everything - every word spoken, every action - was linked throughout the story. Nothing is wasted.
I have seen the film criticised for being too cold and calculating. Maybe some of the characters come across in this way, but this isn't a film that wears it's heart on it's sleeve. It's not a romance. I think it goes deeper than that and asks questions about life and what we think are prepared to sacrifice.
Masterpiece Theatre: The Ruby in the Smoke (2006)
Rushed
I haven't read 'Ruby in the Smoke' but I have read some of the other Sally Lockheart books. I was hoping that this film would throw some light on a few things, but instead I found it very hard to follow. One minute we were here, the next somewhere else. I found it quite difficult to work out where all the characters fitted in, or why they acted the way they did. I don't think it was the acting, but the script was so rushed, they barely had time to fit in all the slitting of throats and killing everyone off. I'd thought this was a children's book, but I do rather regret letting my kids stay up to watch it. I hope future dramatisations of the books slow down a little for the sake of clarity. Surely, if you're going to do a drama like this with all the scenery, clothes and atmosphere, you should try to do it justice and not rush it?
World of Pub (2001)
So funny
One of the funniest things I have ever seen. I would so like to see this again.
Every week you knew 'Dodgy' (Yes mate, no mate) Phil would get a phone call and they'd end up changing the theme of the pub, the fun was in seeing how they would end up burning the pub down again. The writing was so funny, I missed a lot of it for laughing, and then there were all the incidentals like the pub sign, posters and blackboard that always had something amusing on them - if you could spot them. The funniest episode was when the Michael Caine appreciation society came all dressed as their idol. I think there was a fire alarm and they all evacuated in character - lol.
I so miss this show.
