Crash (2004)
Mindless Political Correctness
This could be the worst film I have ever seen, or close to it. It ranks up there with American BEAUTY and THE English PATIENT. It is a hateful assembly of stereotypes (which is supposed to be designed to show the folly of stereotypes, I guess.) I can't stand watching it. We in America are eons beyond the racism that this film depicts. The makers of the film are in my mind the true racists. I remember a book called LIBERAL RACISM that sums this up completely (the author is Jim Street, as I recall). Read it.
Two black guys walk down the street in a white neighborhood. One says, "Why aren't we afraid?" The other says, "Because we have guns." Then they hijack the SUV of the District Attorney and his wife. And they prove to be every bit as racist as the two black guys.
ENOUGH. This has my vote for the Raspberry Award for the WORST Film of the year. (And there's lots of competition lately.)
Syriana (2005)
What crap!
I am sick and tired of realpolitik nihilism posing for profundity. This movie tried to be a-moral and non-judgmental. Everybody in this movie is a moral disgrace. The move for energy independence (about as realistic a hope as putting a human being on the planet Mars in the next year) reduces to immorality independence. EVERYBODY portrayed in this film is despicable.
I ask you, who is worse? The George Clooney character, the CIA hit man?
The emir's son, who has his eye on the profits, and does not respect his father (he's portrayed as an IDEALIST)?
The American economic adviser (Matt Damon) who is willing to sell his sons' life for profit?
Danny Dalton, the profiteering creep and lawbreaker?
The Texas wildcatter?
ARGGHHH. I could go on and on.
Hollywood needs to learn that moral nihilism is not profundity.
CRAP. Pure crap. Reminds me of THE English PATIENT.
AVOID THIS MOVIE. SAve your money.
The Third Miracle (1999)
A priest losing his faith is asked to champion the cause of a woman for sainthood.
This is a review for those who saw the film but didn't think it's first rate. I ask you to look again. So, pardon the spoiler.
It takes confirmation of three miracles to elect a candidate to sainthood. By the end of the film, two have been confirmed. And what a wonderful way to confirm the second miracle? The confirmation is given by the Devil's Advocate himself.
But, pay attention to the title of the film.
What is the third miracle?
Magnificent. A thinking man's film.
Hollywood should be ashamed. They could never make a film this good.
