Lapsis (2020)
Cable Versus..?
It starts off interesting and anticipation gradually sort of fizzles as the whole thing becomes an anti climax, plots seem to appear then disappear, and the ending is non existant. There's nothing interesting beyond the first half. In fact I got here trying to find out what the ending was supposed to be.
I think the whole thing is just to say 'look how horrible cables are' , so ye, 1 star for the beginning
Personally I'm not convinced, I think I'd rather use cable than have my head bombarded by an invisible menace I can't turn off.
Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018)
I Love Marvel
The graphics in this movie are astounding. It's a work of art. I do love Marvel and always have and I'm always happy with what they produce. I found there was a lot of good humour in this one. I don't understand why people whine about the storyline of a comic book movie, for heavens sake these people never had any childhood. If you want a complicated engulfing story go and watch Othello. I love Ant Man and the Wasp. Performance was convincing. it had everything needed for good, funny, light and gripping entertainment.
Galaxy Quest (1999)
I forgot how brilliant this is.
This is pure wonderful pristine sci fi. It's a masterpiece.
Venom (2018)
Loving a Monster
All I can say is, if you ever hung around people in the 80's who rode bikes and had long hair and listened to ACDC, there's one of Those moments in this movie where you will break out in an uncontrollable spasm of laughing. It will completely give away your past history. It's somethng to do with snacks but I won't spoil it. I'm still wiping away the tears.
This movie is a lot of fun but could possibly scare the kids
Possible Worlds (2000)
Powerful stuff
I watched this years ago and didn't grasp the subleties. I watched it again because I remembered liking it. I was absolutely blown away by it. This time I appreciated the sound to begin with, it's so easy and gentle on the ears. The power of it is so subtle that you hardly notice that you are being swept away into a dreamlike reality or should I say travelling through multiple realities.
I can't think of any recent movie that has even been near to the quality of this one in production and direction. Every visual is a work of art, every nuance takes you deeper. It's a love story but with none of the usual seediness. It has shocking moments of horror, so subtle that curiousity overides sensitivity. It's scifi as you are swept away, travelling between realities. You are drawn into the mystery in anticipation for the pieces to come together. There are unexpected moments of pure philosophical wisdom, concepts of the one moment, limitation of our own consciousness. I'm so glad it received the awards that it deserved.
I know it's 18 years since it was released but fhs it should be rated among the very best, so I was motivated to give it a 10. I write this a few days after seeing it for the second time and that in itself says it all.
Fighting the Sky (2018)
Real aliens, please accept apologies.
Weak storyline and full of contradiction. Ended up being a mediocre monster movie. Really bad alien costumes. Couldn't watch all of it, thank goodness. There's a wealth of collective experience in the real world that could have been sourced without including 1960's type "death-rays" over cities. Monsters with advanced access to space-travel who stick their tongues out to frighten people then get knocked unconscious from behind. Ye right.
2 stars for nice graphics of space craft.
I Think We're Alone Now (2018)
Fed Hook
It was awful. Apart from a sad librarian who sees the world as dead people in his morbid way and files away their library cards, symbolically burying them, there's nothing really interesting here.
The bodies being buried are EXACTLY what we were shown of a middle eastern city hit by war mongerers recently on 'news' stories, so maybe there was someone making a point, or perhaps it was intended to reinforce the trauma that news items inflicts on us. gave it 2 for realistic bodybags.
Then only dead people but birds, fish, animals, air, water etc all ok. He catches 2 fish, wtf is that saying?
So it's figurative, symbolic of wanting to escape the illusionaty world. The girl 'wired' in by her parents wants to escape, he is the only other misfit she can find.
Pathetically awful and the Ending ! if you make it that far is a real let down. Shoots her dad who wants to control her, they're only pretending to be real parents... UGH
This is not SCI FI !!!! not even close
Autumn Lights (2016)
very subtle
The woman who drowned herself in misery is a victim of the game being played by this couple. They could even be keeping scores. It might even be unintentional. The film is really clever because you are drawn in to feel a sort of pity for both the husband and his wife.
But they are playing a deadly game of emotional conquest and the melancholy is for the ending of the long season of light. This is what they do to amuse themselves, there's no feelings, just a game with emotions of others. The photographer begins to see it then is caught up with the wife. The husband originally lied that he barely knew the drowned woman yet at the end he admits that he had an affair with her. We are given clues, the husband said of his sick friend who he'd visited in hospital, - "he's forgotten everything", it's as if none of their good times ever happened. Yet he has no regrets about his ex-lover, he denied even knowing her.
Alien Siege (2018)
Busy Afternoon Viewing
It isn't a convincing movie but it is a good example of how prepared we are for such an invasion, lmafao, and what our priorities are, hehe. It's terrible but if you are hoovering and the kids are playing football in the living room with the dog, cat and a hedgehog, it's ok for backgroound noise. The president and the exposed alien have lovely smiles and the actors are invincible shooters against super space travelling technologically superior space armoured aliens but why not? Humans rule don't we? hahaha With better production and maybe real aliens would equal Magic Roundabout, well that might be a stretch I suppose.
I give it 4 for the spaceship scenes.
UFO (2018)
Take Us To Your Leader, contains spoilers
I found some things about this film troublesome. The idea that visitors in UFO's are from civilisations that have managed to establish a World Order is not such a great idea, yet this is plainly stated at the end of the movie. A higher civilisation requires a world government? The visitors use complicated messages only decipherable by mathematicians and astro-physicists. This is nothing like the thousands of reports from people of all walks of life who have reported sightings and encounters, it negates every enquiry, every study of the real phenomena. It's another disinformation movie along the theme of "Take me to your leader" like the things we used to be told in the 1960's.
The Cloverfield Paradox (2018)
Stand Back and see it as a stand alone (spoilers)
I haven't seen any other Cloverfield movies. That's the thing I think. If I had, I would be looking for connections. I wasn't.
At first it seemed quite slow but then when Earth disappeared it became more interesting. As things began to happen, I took on board that because two realities had crashed together, it was only right that there would be coincidences.
The tension built nicely through the whole thing. I wasn't expecting monsters except for a verbal clue that splitting dimensions could possibly let them in. I dismissed this and went with paradox. Killing off all but two of the crew was slightly cliche as a lot of movies do that but when the ending came I was only expecting something like a third Earth to have been caught in the rift.
The last few seconds actually made me shout out loud. It was brilliant and awful.
The horrible realisation of consequences of events that had made me feel the plot was working towards a good ending were stripped away in a second. I would have rated it 7 but too many people had admittedly rated it according to the relationship with previous Cloverfield movies instead of as a stand alone.
I rated it 8.
