Slovenka (2009)
Enjoyed
Although the main plot is enough, I enjoyed the subplot of Edo getting his band back together. I've been unaware how popular '70's American music is with baby-boomer Slovenes. The salacious Zappa cover made me smile.
Blue Like Jazz (2012)
Mistitled
Not much Blue, playing the intro to Coltrane's "A Love Supreme" a couple times ain't much Jazz, neither. Weak, in setting, conflict, climax, resolution, but also character. The animation sequences failed, epic-ly. Can't say anything good about it.
R (2010)
Very Well Done!
Great story, acting, photography, and pacing. This film displays that greed, brutality. and other base features of Human Nature, under pressure, have few limits. There are grim softening themes, too. The comedic parakeet soccer match, the family visits, the poker game, yard scenes, and the two "R"s futile "buddy" exposition are placed precisely. The terse dialogue kept this "subtitle reader" intrigued.
I taught GED and other curriculum at an Ohio Correctional Facility with much less violent criminals and there were "Pod Fathers" that controlled the flow of contraband and supervised "look-outs" and distractions on a similar, yet less severe level. I have worked with colleagues who were part of the game.
Minus one for all the sloppy safety practices in a violent ward.
Will Penny (1967)
Intersting Western
Managing to avoid most of the "horse opera" clichés, "Will Penny" is a well shot production with good acting. I'll never think of "Deck the Halls" the same way after the outrageously, suggestive butter churning scene.
