Unfrosted (2024)
Fails on every level
Jerry Seinfeld should have stayed home and sit on his money instead of producing, directing and leading in this pile of frosty and unfunny, unfrozen mishmash of nonsense. How much have they paid the media to review this as good family entertainment?? If there is any moment that is reality-based in it, I've entirely missed it. As for the jokes, from every star cameo to the main ensemble delivering them, they are so forced and disconnected, as if they were all written separately without concern for the development of the story. It was embarrassing to watch many talented actors be dragged through this mess, hamming it up left and right, I'll make an exception for John Hamm who delivered without self-conscious mockery.
It felt like Hugh Grant was cursing himself for being in it every time he showed up. Truly en embarrassment. Don't waste your viewing time.
Extraña forma de vida (2023)
Embarrasing
Watching this, it felt like a Saturday Night Live spoof on a bad tv soap from the 70s. Was that what it is supposed to look and sound like? Terrible dialogue, bad story and even two great actors can't save this tepid supposed love story from the gutter. That's the best that Almodovar can come up with for gay amor?? Truly pitiful. Ridiculous and truly shameful. I don't know why I'm actually giving this two stars, the sheriff didn't even deserve his. It even feels like soft porn, without the sex except for a glimpse at Pedro's derrière. The flashback scene is even worse, a bit of slapstick for which the writer couldn't bother to delve into something real. Why bother producing this at all?
Past Lives (2023)
Contrived and lacking momentum
Many of the reviews that have given this film ratings of 6 and below have expressed this better. This movie wants to be "moving" but it has such little steam on its train that it feels like you have to keep pushing forward on its tracks. The only well-written scene I thought and well delivered were the two at home with the husband (John Magaro) the only character with whom I felt any real emotional resonance. Not that two leads are bad but they had no potent script to work from. Instead of the multiples googoo-eyed excruciating long staring moments into each other's eyes, why couldn't the writer give them strong realistic dialogue to lift them and truly communicate with each other. I must admit to being bored and grateful to have watched it at home with remote for useful fast forward. Oops, should t have said that. All that said, Celine Song is a new character and she will simply gained from making more movies and developing her craft which does show on here as well.
The Good Nurse (2022)
Move the camera away from those faces
A story worthy of being told moat of us I imagine wouldn't have known otherwise. Two great lead actors and supporting team but the constant close ups with poorly lit sets made me want to push the TV set away from me so I could get some distance. Was it the intention to keep us in the dark as an illustration of the darkness of the tale? The combination of both closeness and darkness only aggravated me and I forced myself to watch toll the end. The deliberate slowness of the film did t bel either, only dragging the story telling and often making me lose interest. I must admit to fast forwarding a number of times. Sorry! Jessica Chastising kept me in.
This simply could use a reshoot.
Feud (2017)
Right to the heart of Hollywood
Michael Zam and Jaffe Cohen had written this script as a movie at first. A long path led them to Ryan Murphy and the three of them opened up the story to a most satisfying viewing experience, as sad and tragic as it is in the end. On the journey though, you get to laugh, be in awe of Jessica Lang's and Susan Sarandon's brilliant and moving performances, surrounded by a fantastic cast, mainly with Alfred Molina, Judy Davis, Stanley Tucci, Alison Wright, Dominic Burgess and the wonderfully understated Jackie Hoffman, with Catherine Zeta-Jones and Kathy Bates as sort of story-teller pillars of this historical FEUD.
The story reaches into so many deep themes and issues not only related to the sea of manipulations of the Hollywood's studio days and the publicity machines of the time, zooming in on the discrimination and challenges that women faced (and still do) combined with aging and so much more. The whole series with its glamor and humor is fully anchored in compassion and the deeply human experience of each character. Just finished my third viewing since it first came out and I am still blown away by the quality of all aspects of this show (art, photography, costume, casting, set, EveryThing) which in my opinion should have garnered all the Emmys, Golden Globes and Sag awards of that year. Lange and Sarandon are simply phenomenal. Bravi to all!!
