Ilginç Bazi Olaylar (2021)
One of the most unique TV series that came out of Turkey.
Turkish TV series are usually quite popular. But they all follow the same route: pretty girl and pretty boy, falling in love through a coincidence. In the first few episode, these two would always contradict themselves and would get together in the middle of the season, just to get separated at the end of the season. This is not the deal with this comedy-drama right here. I have watched After Life and Master of None a bunch of times, and this is a pretty good Turkish representation of both. I know that Ibrahim Buyukak is a massive fan of Ricky Gervais, I am not really sure if he was influenced by After Life straight away, but he definitely had the comedy-drama idea from Ricky Gervais. I didn't like the fact that it was shot in Istanbul but was made to look like it was shot in Bursa. I know that during the pandemic it would be really hard to make it happen, but it would give the show a more unique spin. Other than that, characters are mind-blowing, the cast is incredible and the story was great. I am eager to watch the second season, also to see how the story can be expanded to another season. I will start watching it for the second time right now.
Cinayet Süsü (2019)
Twisty dark comedy
I have been a fan of Ali Atay ever since I started to watch Leyla ile Mecnun. His role as an actor was massive, but Ölümlü Dünya - the first film he directed - was an incredible film. I had my doubts about this, because the way the film had gone seemed weird. I thought it was like a 5, maybe a light 6. But the ending was definitely phenomenal. The approach was definitely out of the box and it created an outstanding scheme for the film. I have to say, in both Ölümlü Dünya and Cinayet Süsü, some scenes were unnecessarily wrong - I know that the director was trying to hold on to that, but it just seemed unnecessary. And about the ending, the way that they've approached to this, made me think of the debate "Art is for Culture v. Art is for the society.". In this case, it was both. And it was outstanding to merge both sides and create something ironic out of it. I cannot say that the film was incredible because of the way it was directed, but more because of the story. I was blown-away at the end of the film.
