Werewolf by Night (2022)
Not sure we watched the same thing?
Yeah, not sure what the 10* review bombers watched, but I'm pretty sure it's not what I just watched. I probably would have given it a 4 out of 10 but had to go low to balance out the fake 10 stars.
The main complaint is that it was utterly boring. There's like 5 minutes of 'action' at the end of the movie and 45 minutes of boring time filling dialogue that pretty much adds nothing to what you're watching. The director also seems to have confused black and white with dark, overall the lighting was very poor.
As the other honest reviews have alluded to, the werewolf is also pretty poor, easily one of the worst costumes I've seen in any horror film ever and I've seen a lot. They've also decided to head down the same path as hulk with him, instead of some savage uncontrollable creature, he's sentient, shows empathy and makes good life decisions.. cute. Don't want the little children to be too frightened now do we.
All in all it felt like a fan made YouTube movie with about the same budget. Speaking of which, if you were going to blow the whole budget on man-thing's cgi, then why not name the show after him instead?
Elvis (2022)
Dreadful
Possibly one of the worst and most annoying films I've ever watched, rambles from one lie/misrepresentation to another. As another reviewer put it, it was like watching a 2+ hour trailer. There's zero substance here and the only person really 'acting' and getting any screen time is Tom Hanks who looks and sounds atrocious in his fat suit. Butler doesn't look much better, I'm not sure if he's wearing false teeth or he's had veneers done, but his mouth and badly stuck on sideburns are incredibly distracting. Most of his scenes seem to consist of one liners and attempting to smoulder at the screen.
The one thing you'd expect from a biopic of a legendary singer like Elvis would perhaps be some great music and that's what this film lacks most, there's barely any of his music in it and when there is, it's typically 5-10 seconds snippets and then on to the next scene. To make it worse though, the director, for some bizarre reason, seems to have included a truly awful modern day sound track, featuring high class artists such as 'doja cat'.... Probably some sort of attempt to appeal to the modern zombie youth, who will clearly have zero interest in this movie, because I'm pretty sure Elvis and rock and roll fans in general are not particularly well known for their love of the talentless auto-tuned talking 'music' that the new generation are drip fed through the media.
All in all this film taught me nothing about Elvis whatsoever and was in serious danger of making me like him a lot less. The rubbish attempts to make the movie woke, such as making it seem as though he was a black civil rights activist who's friends were all black are incredibly disingenuous and distracting and should have been left out altogether, there are a lot of aspects of Elvis' life that could have been focused on, such as his sexual deviance perhaps, yet the director chooses (or was forced) to focus on the Martin Luther King and Bobby Kennedy assassinations, like this was the defining moment of his life or some sort of turning point for him, yet in reality its barely a footnote and of very little interest.
This is a dreadful re-telling of the life and times of Elvis and hopefully a better director will pick it up and make a better, more true to life version, but this garbage is almost unwatchable. I'd give it a 2 out of 10 if I was feeling generous, but I deducted a point to counteract all the fake 10 start reviews. Imdb should really do something about that, but hopefully as more real people watch it, that 7 star rating will drop to an or 4.
Moloch (2022)
One of the best films I've seen in a while
As above, one of the best films I've seen in a while, probably more so because it's not bogged down and ruined by wokism, which is refreshing. It's a funny time we live in, where making a movie that's normal is different.. But anyway, I liked the feel and pace of this movie, sure, I can see why it's a little slow for some people's liking, but it uses that time developing a rapport with the characters and made me care for them more than I would normally, especially the main character, which I find is rare in movies lately. Even rarer still is this film managed a few 'twists' that I didn't entirely see coming right up until they happened, like at the end where she saves someone from being attacked and then it clicked, that she was probably going to regret doing that. Normally films today are so shallow that I'm 3 or 4 steps ahead to the point (and to the annoyance of my family) that I can even guess the upcoming dialogue, so bonus points earned there.
My only criticisms would be, as mentioned in some of the other reviews, there's a couple of moments with some poor acting (from one old guy in particular), which I feel a more experienced director wouldn't have let creep in, but it's not enough to take away from the film and the leads all put in solid believable performances, especially in the parts that matter. And, without giving too much away I would have also liked to see a more positive, definitive ending to the movie, or should I say a resolution either way, who knows, maybe it was kind of left hanging in the hope of a sequel being greenlighted? To me it just felt a little hurried, like they'd run out of time or budget maybe.
I see some criticisms of the half English, half Dutch with subtitles element in other people's reviews, whereas I'd like to have seen it all in English, I feel it doesn't distract too much, if you're sitting paying full attention to the movie it shouldn't matter at all really, I find it a bit annoying because I have limited free time lately so I like to do things like play computer games at the same time, but that's not a criticism that can be aimed at the movie, that's a 'my own' fault. It is a 'foreign' movie made in a non-English speaking country and so I'm just grateful it was at least half English.
Endangered Species (2021)
Snoozefest
As per the previous reviews, the film is just aweful, but I don't feel they convey quite how boring it was. By the half way mark I was really fighting with myself not to turn it off, in the end I popped the playstation on for some real entertainment and half watched it in the background.
I could have stomached the poor script and directing and all the films other faults, but as is typical with most of the dross coming out of Hollywood at the moment, it attempts to lecture and has a few woke moments, because white men (in suits) are everything that's wrong with the world right? Perhaps if the idiots with agendas were kept out of making films and interfering with scripts and casting, they could concentrate on making movies that people actually want to watch and can enjoy again.
P.s. The acting wasn't all that aweful to be fair, they did everything they were asked and made the best of a really poor script, screenplay and constant staged disaster after (yawn) disaster. Also, towards the end there I'm pretty sure it looked like they were having to improvise dialogue, either the script ran out, the cast thought it was too poor to deliver, or the director thought it would add some edgy realism, big fail.
Daphne & Velma (2018)
Your children will like it less than you do...
The word dross was invented with movies like this in mind. It was a good idea in practice and with the Scooby Doo link, should have been an easy solid 5 star movie, or at least be entertaining to children. Unfortunately it was neither of those 2 things. My children, ranging in age between 3 and 14, disliked this movie more than me and wandered off thoroughly bored not even half way through. And thats the main problem with this film, it doesn't seem to know who it's aiming itself at. Too mature for small children and far too boring and uninteresting for teenagers. It starts off irritatingly sugary sweet, like those aweful disney children's entertainment series, where everything's so cutesy and gender/race neutral. Daphne is now Latino at a guess (with a bad ginger wig), her mom's black and her dad's white... Regardless of race though, I found all three characters were poor choices for their roles and were all mildly irritating at best (Welma doesn't fare much better). I originally rated this movie 1 star before I'd finished watching it, but to it's credit the second half was much better than the first, so I upped the rating to reflect this. My advice would be to avoid altogether or just skip the first half, even then your children wont find it very interesting still, this film adds nothing to the Scooby Doo universe, infact it probably lowered it's stock considerably. A chance sadly missed.
